Ryan Kriener

Millard could jump through the roof, but he had troubles in the classroom. A good kid.
That was his freshman year, and he was never ruled academically ineligible after that. Played High school ball with him at CR Washington and am still very good friends with him and his family! Remember the NCAA tournament game against George Washington (I believe) he was on fire and helped bring us back from 18 down to win.

Since you know him then you know it was not your prototypical classroom issue. And, yes, that game against GW was great. He also had s heckuva game against Cherokee Parks.

Back to the OP, Ryan has some skills that this team really needs. I think he will mesh well with the kids he will play with. And I am hoping that the staff can bring out the potential in him.

Tom Schafer back in 1987. Played his first 2 years at Illinois.
Rode in an elevator with him in Minneapolis during the NCAA tournament in '86 prior to the Miami (O) game.
LC: Good luck today.
TS: We packed for the whole weekend.

Team beat Miami on a last-second shot by Hornacek, then beat #2 Michigan to go to the Sweet Sixteen.

Neither Iowa St nor UNI have any fear of the players Iowa is bringing in next year. Pemsl shows a way better feel for the game than Kriener, hopefully he can regain his form.

I doubt the ISU run continues like they had it under Hoiberg.. They very well may wishing they had a Kriener down the road.

I like skilled bigs and if Wingspan is true, that is big plus. Not a fan of some of the other player types Fran has concentrated on. Wish for once we would have a Monte Morris type PG in the mix.

His struggles are that the Coach of Spirit Lake likes to run and press and shoot lots of 3's, 6 shots vs. HWC is a great example of why he didn't get the numbers. They settled for 29 three point attempts instead of running any type of 1/2 court offense to take advantage of their stud inside.

I heard there was a closed door "discussion" after the HWC loss and some frustrations aired. Be interesting to see if there is more of a focus on running the offense thru the post more, instead of jacking up 3's?

Give HWC credit, they are a well coached team and it is how they play as a team, not head to head matchups that give someone like Kriener trouble vs. them.

SL's problem is that they tried to play HORSE with HWC. That doesn't usually work; those little Dutch boys have been shooting since they were 5. They are usually had by big teams with athletic guards. If SL had focused more on pounding it inside, they wouldn't have had trouble.

Cook, Pemsl, or Kriener?

Pretty sure that isn't true.

18-21 FG
4-6 FT
8 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals

Struggled mightily again versus Hull Western Christian, though. Josh Van Lingen just seems to get the best of him each time they play. Must not be a good match up for him.
Spencer has a decent team up in NW Iowa this year as well (7th in 3A in one poll I saw I believe). They led 2A #1 Hull Western Christian at Hull by 11 at the half and 44-40 going into the 4th quarter, and lost by 12 when they couldn't get anything to drop for them late. Hull shot 64% in the 2nd half.

Spencer has a couple of good scorers, but like everyone else they're undersized when playing Hull. Spencer recently beat Lemars and Seniors Jake Kluender and Preston Funderburg had 32 and 41 respectively. A Junior from Lemars, Trenton Hillbrands had 42 as Spencer won in OT. Funderburg had 15 in the 1st half against Hull and got shut out the 2nd half, and Kluender had 14 of 16 points in the 2nd half.

They (Spencer) have a game against Algona, then their 1st game after the Christmas break is on the road against Kreiner and Spirit Lake.

I believe he has 7'3" wingspan

He looks like he has a good wingspan. Got to love that. It helps tremendously for guarding, dunking and blocking. What about Pemsl?

Christian Williams has his at just over 7' that will come in handy!

I wonder what Baer's wingspan is? Probably close 7' if I had to guess

Cool story, I am glad you talked to both programs and they let you in on this information. The thing is the 3 programs are completely different on and off the court. UNI plays a slower half court offense and targets different players, ISU does not even recruit and just wait for transfers (only matter of time before this bites them in the butt), while Iowa recruits versatile athletes that can play multiple positions and has the ability to play up-tempo style...UNI generally gets big body types (especially in post) where as Iowa likes long-lengthy players (Marble, White, Uthoff, Williams, Basabe) but will still take big body guys. Essentially Fran and staff will take best available and figure out positions later.
