They don’t just frolic in the countryside. They show up at some farm and scare the kids, chase the chickens, attack another pet, etc and ends up getting shot.
Turning them loose is a worse fate and turns over your responsibility to others, which isn’t right.
Yeah, but you'd never know about that end of it. And there's a chance something good happens. It wasn't like it was an evil dog 100% of the time. Just really random acts of evil.

One thing I would NOT recommend is a hybrid approach. An acquaintance tried that and he said it was among the worst moments of his life and he'll never live it down.

He took the dog out in the woods and shot it in the back of the head when the dog wasn't looking. Dog never felt a thing, but the emotional toll it took on the owner was immense.

3 puppies found dead along trail in C.R.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Three pit bull puppies were found dead — likely from abuse — last week along the Sac and Fox Trail, and Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control is investigating.

People walking the trail near the Cedar River, roughly between Cole Street SE and Otis Road SE, on April 15 and 16 found the deceased dogs — one found April 15 and two found April 16, a police news release states. An investigation found the three dogs most likely were related, possibly from the same litter.

“Investigators are asking for the public’s help in locating those responsible for the animals’ welfare and those who may be responsible for the abuse,” the release states. “If dogs disappeared from your neighborhood recently, or you notice dogs missing from their normal homes, please call Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control at 319-286-5993 or the CRPD non-emergency hotline at 319-286-5491.”

Has anyone asked Colonoscopy what he knows about this?

Been through this 3 times now. If you loved the dog, the emotional toll is immense regardless of the manner in which it is performed.

C. If you let a dog loose into the wild you should be taken out and left in the wilderness to fend for yourself and see how that goes for you.

Yeah, this thread is out of line and just shows what kind of person OP is. Tough situation and decision you had to make, no reason for this.
I took a lot of heat for my suggestion. But it seems better than euthanizing the dog given if that's the only other option

This makes so much sense. Where was the trailer park located?
To be fair, when I was a kid, dogs ran loose all over the neighborhood. There was a gigantic St. Bernard named Brandy (original) who can to our house regularly. No idea who she belonged to but she would come in and flop down on the floor and we'd lean against her to watch tv. After a while, she'd get up and go to the door...we'd let her out and away she'd go. Our dog, Tramp (he was found rooting around in a pile of garbage) wandered all over and ran the 'hood with an iron fist.

What year was this? I live in a small Iowa town and the city would always pick up the strays. I mean there were times the neighbors, or someone's, dog we knew ran around then eventually went home, but not a bunch of dogs we had no clue who owned.

I find pet ownership to be rather distasteful. It seems to be more geared towards the whims and interests of the owner than of the actual pet. Pet's autonomy doesn't matter. Sure, they care about the pet, so long as it's convenient to care.

You had a long good life, but you're peeing on our carpet so we have to put you down.

You're the one who's rather distasteful. Your sig block is exactly how I envision your mouth. Alaska Guy said it best. You're a dick.

I have a pretty simple solution for you then. You probably shouldn't own a pet. Just keep your collection of anuses close by and I'm sure you'll be fine.
I have my books
And my anuses to protect me
I am shielded in my armor
Hiding in my room safe within my womb
I touch anuses and no one touches my anus
I am a rock I am an anus

60's...and to clarify:

Brandy had a tag (obviously) with an address and phone number on it, but they lived on the other side of the school property somewhere and we didn't know them. They didn't have any kids in our group - which was huge -so we had no idea who they were. We just knew Brandy.
