This just pisses me off. And Spencer's cut? $0.00.
This is not capitalism. This is a rigged market. Spencer is forbidden from taking a cut of any profits.I agree it feels a bit 'greedy', but such is capitalism. Can't copyright every word that comes out of someone's mouth. Spencer should work with his business partner (Kem) and work a deal with Scheels to get his face on the t-shirt for a cut of the profits. I'd go with the photo of him saying that phrase with his team title hat on crooked. Looked badass. I'd buy the shirt then.

I’m sure the $chools are broken up over having to delay for COVID.As of right now, he can't get a cut. As I understand it, the NCAA was going to change their rules about athletes profiting from their image early this year. But I believe that has been delayed.
Probably Hawkeye Heaven.Just to clarify, this was NOT the Iowa City Scheels and I heard it was some idiot at the Des Moines store. It was not approved by corporate (obviously).
Sayings and short phrases aren't protected, so there's nothing to copyright or plagiarize against. Though it's still a good idea to get permission, however Lee doesn't own that saying, so even that's not needed. The only thing that's truly in hot water here is Yoda.Uh oh, Spencer (and Scheels) may have committed plagiarism.

They were taken down once corporate heard about it.Just was at the scheels in DM a couple of hours ago and these shirts were not there unless I missed them. And I was looking for them, but I was also in a hurry.
Yea, was just joking. This largely seems a non-issue to me, except Yoda.pretty sure you can't co
The other Iowa wrestlers call him Yoda.In a year he and all other athletes can get paid for their image and likeness. I don’t see either one happening here. Yeah he said that but he didn’t trademark “excuses are for wusses”. It is what it is. Smart move for scheels I guess. I have no idea what scheels is tho lol.
I don’t really get the Star Wars reference. Do any iowa fans call him the Yoda of wrestling? Lol. Does this make Ayala the padawan learner? Lol.
Surprised they had the balls to sell something with Yoda on it tho damn.
Scheels is a sporting goods chain store, at least in the Midwest. They just built the biggest store they have in Eden Prairie, MN. They have a lot of cool stuff in this monsterous place, IMO. Been there a few times. Has a small Ferris Wheel in the middle of the thing. In a year he and all other athletes can get paid for their image and likeness. I don’t see either one happening here. Yeah maybe, but if this is the worst thing that happened in the world today, I think things are looking up.It is absolutely mind blowing that a Scheel’s store manager would think selling those shirts was a good idea.
No. No. No. No. And no. Everyone repeat after me: 'In no way, and in no world, should HS or college athletes make any money from their sport. Ever. Even if some guy is making money in this sleezy kind of way.' Schollies? Yes. Coach advocacy in admissions? Yes. Need based financial aid? Yes.
Unfortunately, the courts may not agree with you. We're sliding down this slippery slope of big money in college sports, and there's no telling how that will end. Now it's out of the NCAA's hands, and in the hands of the courts.No. No. No. No. And no. Look where the conflict of interest money in college athletics has gotten us.
Disney goes after anyone! He doesn't seem too upset by this. Scheels should be more worried about Disney... that's a big time infringement to use Yoda.

What would stop the NCAA institutions from having scholarship athletes sign a thing saying they understand the deal and will not try and get money from their likeness. Sure, guys like JBO and the like might say screw you I'm going overseas or to some minor league, but if you took the kids in D3 football and put them in D1 uniforms I would cheer just as much for them. Sure the level would not be as good, but that's not why I'm watching.
I am 100% opposed to schools paying the athletes - I am 100% in favor of NCAA athletes being able to make money from outside sources, who can use their name and likeness to promote their own business.Honestly didn't expect the wrestling community (well at least the several posters above) to be so opposed to a college wrestler earning some money. It's a really tough sport, and the prospects after graduation aren't great. Only the top guys would likely be able to earn any meaningful profit off their name to begin with.
Going to need to see some better reasoning because right now y'all just sound like angry boomers.

This isn't sport specific. Scholarships are money, if you have one regardless of why you have it, Athlectically or Academically, you're getting paid.Honestly didn't expect the wrestling community (well at least the several posters above) to be so opposed to a college wrestler earning some money. Your age doesn't matter to be able to figure this out, but commonon sense sure does.
Not to speak for anyone else, but my issue isn't about the athletes making a few bucks from NIL, I think this makes sense. My concern is about what this means for recruiting on an even playing field. This potentially opens up the doors for big money boosters to get involved and find creative ways of putting a few thousand or a few hundred thousand dollars in the pockets of the top recruits. Not sure how many billionaire boosters Iowa has, but I'd bet we're not in the top 25 in the nation.Honestly didn't expect the wrestling community (well at least the several posters above) to be so opposed to a college wrestler earning some money. How do we know it was the store manager? Yes, a manager is responsible, however, it’s impossible to know what your employees are doing at all times. More will be revealed. It is absolutely mind blowing that a Scheel’s store manager would think selling those shirts was a good idea.
The schools are also providing the vehicle, at no cost to the Athlete. Arena's and Stadium's aren't free, nor is running them. People are free to go shoot baskets in their driveway with no school affiliation, and videotape and sell it to the world and see how they fare.Come on man. It should be obvious given the context of the discussion, that we are referring to additional revenue (e.g. any athlete selling merchandise with their name on it), and not tuition.
The funding could come from the parents and/or relatives of the plaintiffs? So many people at the trough it boggles. Point in case, during Wednesday's SCOTUS oral argument the plaintiff's lawyer (opposed to NCAA athlete compensation) was paid by NCAA with money created (mainly) by NCAA student athletes. The very athletes he argued against being compensated are paying his six figure salary.
Is this a great country, or what. Pay #22.

You're going to pay for it one way or another, it is that simple, so be careful what you wish for. Money doesn't magically appear out of thin air, contrary to some apparent popular belief (nationwide in other words).
