Possible, but highly unlikely. Seth Waxman represented the NCAA, the defendant this case. Waxman former Solicitor General retained by NCAA to present case before SCOTUS.The funding could come from the parents and/or relatives of the plaintiffs?
I believe the IA women’s swimming team legal fees were funded in this manner?
Once Barta saw how much was raised, the team was reinstated for competition.
How many you want, and how much you pay? I'll run to the tshirt store and have a few made for you if the price is right.dam it wish i would have gotten one of them shirts before it was shit canned.
I agree 100% on this one. Recruiting will become about. " how much additional $" can I make. Side deals and heaven forbid a "slush fund".Not to speak for anyone else, but my issue isn't about the athletes making a few bucks from NIL, I think this makes sense. My concern is about what this means for recruiting on an even playing field. This potentially opens up the doors for big money boosters to get involved and find creative ways of putting a few thousand or a few hundred thousand dollars in the pockets of the top recruits. Not sure how many billionaire boosters Iowa has, but I'd bet we're not in the top 25 in the nation.
Unless pretty strict rules are in place from the start, this could and probably will ruin college sports as we know it. Now you may say - there is already illegal payments and unfair recruiting going on - , and you'd be right, but that doesn't mean we need to throw out all laws and all rules. Whatever the new rules might be, guess what? There will be people breaking those as well. Someone is always going to try and find a way to give more than allowed to secure the best talent. Opening the flood gates is only going to muddy the waters. There has to be a reasonable plan with fair limits, especially with the new transfer rules. We could be looking at pro sports except there are no contracts and a kid could change schools whenever he or she wants, just to make more money.
Can you imagine a booster at another school poaching 4 or 5 of the 2021 national champion wrestlers? There could certainly be ways this could be done through NIL payments. Rules and a plan are going to have to be air tight and punishments for violations are going to have to be enforced and sever.
I don’t see how this changes anything at all from the current status. There are 4 schools that compete for top recruits - Iowa, OSU, TOSU, PSU. Those 4 schools will be able to offer the most $ to recruits. If you go to Iowa and win, you’ll be able to make more money off of your name and likeness than almost anywhere else, probably anywhere IMO.I agree 100% on this one. Recruiting will become about. " how much additional $" can I make. Side deals and heaven forbid a "slush fund".
This isn't sport specific. Scholarships are money, if you have one regardless of why you have it, Athlectically or Academically, you're getting paid.
Your age doesn't matter to be able to figure this out, but common sense sure does.
The above is my posting from different thread ('NIL deals'). My immediate reaction to the "Trademark' action by Spencer Lee was an effort to protect 'his' intellectual property.Celebrities, personalities, stars or superstars will occasionally trademark things and stuff with little intention of actually benefiting from that property. The trademark is a protection of intellectual property. The filing is simply to prevent others from exploiting, cashing-in or denigrating the trademarked item.
With wide disparity of new NIL state statutes caution is recommended/advised.
Go Hawks
LOL at these two things being mutually exclusive. This is not capitalism. This is a rigged market. Spencer is forbidden from taking a cut of any profits.

And who was Spencer representing when he said it? All the football and wrestling coaches in Pennsylvania that were using it as far back as the 80s. Spencer was smart to try to trademark it but he in no way coined the term. It was overused and worn out decades ago.

No one has to get a licensing agreement from George Lucas. He doesn't own diddly dick anymore. Also, I think it is obvious nobody got the ok, for a licensing agreement from George Lucas for the use of Yoda. Spencer certainly had the option of copywriting, "Excuses are for Wussies." But, who would think to do that? Most people getting interviewed are not going to think , "hmmm, I better get that quote copyrighted just in case and capitalize on it." That is except AJ Ferrari...

No. Dumb is this Josh Gerben fella claiming that Spencer Lee coined the term "Excuses are for wusses". I'm shocked I have to even tell you how silly that is... Are you telling me you never heard that phrase before Spencer Lee said it? Anyone that played ball or wrestled in Pennsylvania heard that saying all the time back in 80s and 90s. So much so it became overplayed, worn out and and after awhile you were a douche (another dumb worn out term you corncobs still use here) if you were still using it. I grimmace every time I see it used here if Im being honest. Oh, and I'd bet my life on it that Spencer first heard it from an old timer like me. If I was going to be even more precise, he probably got it from his mom or Larry who in my opinion should probably copywrite "3 ring binder" if the 3 are just sitting around thinking of all the dumb shit they can try to make money off of...This is just dumb. You can do better than that JT.
Do you not get it????? This is a business decision and he said it on a big stage. Coaches weren’t going to “coin” that term ever throughout history bc they have never been on the stage like Spencer is and was. Stop the wah wah “I said it first” crap and watch an amazing wrestler make a little money that he deserves.No. Dumb is this Josh Gerben fella claiming that Spencer Lee coined the term "Excuses are for wusses". In reality those of us who grew up in the 60’s and 70’s…in Iowa, had heard it used in its original form. Excuses are for Wusses, is a derivative of the original, since you’re try to be technical about the origin.No. Dumb is this Josh Gerben fella claiming that Spencer Lee coined the term "Excuses are for wusses". Although I agree the phrase isn't new....have seen it on merchandise before too....if somebody could have, and wanted to, trademark/copyright it, well....you snooze you loose. Kind of like trying to claim credit for somebody's wife whom you dated 30 years ago (I tried, doesn't work!). More power to Spencer.
