Why doesn’t Iowa/Swarm/whomever just give these six returning guys (Higgins, Jackson, Castro, Schulte, Harris, Lachey) like 75k NIL money and not have them on scholarship?

They obviously get all other NIL money they would get. But most of these guys are going to be in school for a semester and then start preparing for the NFL Draft in the spring.

You can only do this with fifth and sixth year guys, so why not take advantage of it????

Not that simple. IF they are not on scholarship, they can not take advantage of the benefits a scholarship player gets.

It's actually become a common practice...and I'm guessing when you say "5th, 6th year guys" you are alluding to the B10 policy that all schollies are guaranteed for 4 years (assuming they stay eligible)...

That policy is misunderstood by most of us fans. It's guaranteed through graduation. In this day and age with EEs and kids staying full year around many graduate by the end of their 3rd year...thus become GSs by their 4th...

Thus you can go over the 85 man limit easily because you don't have to keep your upperclassmen on schollie if you have a NIL package to compensate

Yea. That was exactly what I was alluding to in your second paragraph. I just didn’t word it as well as you. There are certain Power 5 schools that are signing guys directly as freshman with NIL and no scholarship , that seems a bit out there. But we have rivals that are doing it.

I'm happy to see these defensive returnees,.. If the offense problem was as much about Brian as many say it was then it will automatically be better with with nothing more than a new OC,.. Let's start there.

And that’s the type of attitude that will get you crushed like a stone in the new big ten.

I haven't heard of schools signing HS players (meaning top recruits) without an initial scholarship...but at the same time...I can believe that...weird world we live in

From my understanding, the guys that are doing it aren’t top recruits, but more along the lines of specialists at iowa. Maybe like a kicker that wouldn’t be on scholarship right away but is induced to go based on NIL money.

You can still have only so many in camp.

I doubt they have enough money to do that.

It's pretty simple. For a player to be granted an extra covid year they must be on scholarship. That is an NCAA rule that was imposed for the 2023-2025 seasons. The players utilizing their extra year are not eligible to play unless on scholarship (and counting against the 85 scholarship limit).

Not sure how it applies to grads, but in the past a similar question came up around getting around scholarship limit by having them on academic scholarship, but those cases still applied to the schollie max, at least in football and basketball.

Correct when it comes to schollies...this includes if a player (originally) has one for another sport it still applies to the 85 limit...for example, if a guy has a track schollie and joins FB it counts towards the 85

However, there is a new loophole with NIL. Walk-ons don't count towards the 85 period. So basically you now can give a kid enough for tuition through NIL and call him a "walk-on." Now I'm not going to say (as I understand it) that schools are doing that with a ton of kids but a ton of schools are doing it with kids here and there to navigate the 85 limit...it's starting to become quite common (from what I understand)

You might be able to do this if a player comes in as a walk on with all the NIL stuff, but unless rules have changed I am almost positive that once you are on scholarship at a school, that school can't take you off scholarship and have you be a walk on. Yes, scholarships are not a 4 year guarantee, but if a school takes away your scholarship you can't stay as a walk on, you got to find a new school.

They literally are a 4 year guarantee for all Power 5 conferences, assuming you don't flunk out. It seems like at least somebody on these boards claims that scholarships are a year to year thing every single day. That is simpy not the case.

That I don't know for sure I guess, but my comment was more directed at the OP, for sure you can't go from Scholarship to Walk On at the same school.

That doesn’t apply to the situation with Higgins, Schulte, et al. because - as explained above - you can’t use a Covid year as a walk-on. You have to be on scholarship.

1) as I stated above most don't understand the rule...it's guaranteed to graduation up to 4 years. Thus, if a player is an EE, takes classes all year long and gets his undergraduate degree at say the end of his 3rd year...it is no longer guaranteed

2a) The rule applies to kids who sign a letter of intent out of high school only

2b) It does not apply to tranfers...grad or undergrad

3) Players who walk on...who didn't sign a LOI can be awarded a one year schollie

Thus there are ways to circumvent the rule
