I’m seeing as many signs for school board elections here in Waukee as I have for presidential elections. Can honestly say that this is the first time I will be voting in a school board election.

The 4 challengers basically running as a collective are what you expect with the parent-choice (read: teachers and masks = bad) type.

One thing I’ve learned is that if you lead your description of yourself with “I’m a patriot”, I just assume you’re a bad candidate.

Are these things getting as heated in other places as they are over here?

You are voting to either continue making kids in schools in perpetuity, or not. That’s the choice this time.

Yes they are. School board is non-partisan in function, but that has been blown to hell. Mask mandates, the Pledge, vaccines and CRT should not be main points of campaigns, but here we are.

There’s a house down the street that keeps me informed on all of the downballot races and candidates. I pretty much have to do zero research and just make sure I don’t vote for any of the dozen or so names on the signs in his yard.

I don’t necessarily disagree. But I also know that these people running are generally not who I want setting school curriculum either. That’s how you get to a stage where teaching that the Holocaust is bad is controversial.

Me either. And, they should stay out of curriculum. But, if people don’t swing it back the other way, it’s going to get a lot worse. You just saw how the status quo handled things the past two school years. How many more years do you want like that?

A group of MAGAS combined "their slate" by using the same signs with all 3 names on it. All over. I'm not quite sure how they can do that with campaign finance rules....but good luck with that. They are running because Ames tried to teach critical race theory. (I also think it is why they got so angry when they hired some minority principals since last election.

I heard some really inappropriate comments (if not down right racist) comments at AHS football games.

So basically everyone should simply capitulate to progressive ideology and get in line?

School Board elections have absolutely become partisan. The American left need look no further than the mirror in front of them to find out why.

This goes both ways. Some in our neighborhood have or had leftwing signs and/or Biden signs this past election. Any school board sign in their yard is a good indicator for the rest of the neighborhood to vote for someone else.

Blindly following your political tribe. Or even worse, doing your “research” via social media. It’s the scourge of American democracy today.

I've read the profiles submitted by every board member candidate. It's fascinating to read how some handle that exercise. Some come right out and let you know where they stand on everything, others give clues but generally hold back and the rest write fluff pieces that stay away from controversies and basically say nothing.
I respect those that are transparent.

I do wonder how these folks will react when it’s time to do the real aspects of the job like review the bills and approve teacher salaries.

I’ve been wondering if they were running as a “block” or what was going on with those signs. Weird stuff

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure the Waukee 4-pack is supported by a super PAC which is nuts for a school board race.

Where are you from Northern? Who are some of the candidates you’re liking?

I’m also going to be voting for the first time in a school election. My daughter is a senior this year, besides her freshman year I would say her entire high school career has been pretty erratic with the online learning, then part time in class schedule, masks, athletic seasons cancelled.

I feel bad for her and all the kids.

Have any of you attended a school board meeting or been attentive to what your children are being taught? Have you gone to any candidate forums and listened or asked any candidate what they think about curriculum content?
Or what their overall philosophy is with regard to education?
Seems like we’re tilting towards politics rather than reading - writing - arithmetic. Just keep the politics out and the actual education in.

So you are gonna vote those people out because they were trying to protect kids and the community from a pandemic? You think they enjoyed spending their time on a volunteer position making decisions like that? Or do you think they shouldn't have done anything? Hard to tell with an immense dumbass such as yourself.

What is it you are so upset about that you are going to vote out people that won't affect your life anymore? You have proven time and time again over the years you have a minimally functional brain.

What are you so upset about that you need to know how I will vote. You have proven time and time again that I seem to get under your skin. You may need to speak with a professional, or put yourself out of your misery. If you chose the later, I will send flowers.

I dont need to know how you will vote. Its clear and obvious, just want to see you try to justify your vote and you can't do it. Typical.

You should probably watch what you say, boy.

If they continue to operate and spend your school tax dollars then you have every right to an opinion as to HOW they operate, do you not?

Why would I have to justify anything to you? Lol at the “boy” comment, I’ve taken shits bigger than you. 🤣

Sure, but thats not why he and all the MAGAs and Qtards are blowing up these volunteer school board elections.
In my city, school board members are paid $42,000 a year. They're not volunteers by any stretch of the imagination. Almost all are degreed and are accomplished in another field or have spent time in the field of education. They're a culturally diverse group and as long as they focus on actually educating children, I don't care about their party.
But like it or not, in some school districts in this country, parents are not happy with what's going on.
Does that automatically mean they're "MAGATS" ???
Or Qtards? Whatever those are?

Just to provide you some context in the Waukee election since that was what was linked. Every year the WEA (Waukee Education Association l) sends a standard list of questions to all people running so they can then forward their answers to people so they can get an idea of their thoughts and policies. Every candidate, every year responds to the questions. These 4, who are banding together, didn’t even bother to respond. In addition, here is a text message these 4 are sending out.

Waukee School Board Election: A little over 2 weeks to go. We must win 4 WCSD Board seats or the mandates (which Waukee has none) and radical indoctrination of our students will continue.

You are getting ripped off if they are making 42K a year and producing trash like you.

You realize the "upset" parents are upset about masks, covid, CRT etc. Which are all republican/MAGATs(as you typed)/Q-tard talking points. None of it is the actual education of the kids. Before you scream CRT!!!! is, please explain to me what you think teaching CRT looks like. The fact that you are oblivious to this shouldn't be surprising given who you are.

Trash like me? Oh, okay. I've been extremely civil to you and have made every effort just to have a discussion.
Your triggered response that quickly resorts to some sort of name calling indicates you're not interested. I have no idea why you would choose to try to go that route, but I have my suspicions and I'll leave it at that.

Go call someone else names. Maybe you can begin by looking in a mirror.

You’re doing the most. It’s one thing to attempt humor through shock and hyperbole and quite another just being a dumbass.

Right now, you’re in the latter.

What’s messed up is I have never worried about the education. Or to be clear - I live in Iowa because I’ve always been told we have good schools. The absolute last thing I want to do is show up at a school board meeting to fight about curriculum or politics (the latter being a freaking nightmare).

I thought I was living amongst like minded people and the school board was basically a figurehead of our community’s shared values. I’ll move if I ever feel the need to attend a school board candidate forum
