Okay I have some info for you. In the 1st 20 min. scrimmage Iowa won by about 10. Patrick w/ 21, Rebraca 11 and Kris 11. Starters were Perkins, Sandfort, Patrick, Kris and Rebraca.
the 10 minute games were both won by Iowa.
Perkins played well. Patrick played well, Kris was the best player on the floor. Ulis and Bowen played well and played together a fair amount. Kris and Sandfort were not great from 3.
Ogundele made a few plays but still out of condition.

Got to love a guy who will go undercover to gather intel. Well done sir.

So how many of you all think the Riley Mulvey will again be a bench warmer with little playing time behind vastly improved Gabe Ogundele? If Riley can't get playing time in a meaningless exhibition scrimmage against a Summit League team it appears another wasted year awaits him. I'm sure he's looking forward to it....

Riley is going to have to earn his time as does Josh. If he doesn't work hard enough to improve, he's not going to make it.

Does he have a medical problem or is he just lazy/inmotivated?
That is the question. Would Fran have brought him back if he was lazy and unmotivated? I seem to remember last year that Josh had a bad case of covid and never was able to get in condition. That may still be the case.

He's a big boy for one...big and would be a big value add in this conference if he can give us some good minutes which he already has. Someone a couple of summers ago now pasted some very good, very impressive pics of Josh working out and a very nice stroke from the 3... I was glad to hear from Sute that Josh had his moments on Saturday which I am expecting this more and more from him..... Josh, like a lot of players need PT and more of it. Hopefully he will earn and get that opportunity more this season....

I am pulling for him cause he has the type of size that is a pain in the arse for teams and like Iowa to have to match up with....

Sandfort and Pat on the wings defensively is open hunting season. I won't overreact to the lineup too much because scrimmages are about experimenting. They probably wanted to figure out whether they could get away with it or not.

Even if we can get some good minutes out of him in a couple 3-4 minute shifts per half would be great. He held is own against the Purdue bigs last year. He has it in him.

I'm pulling for Josh also for the reasons you mentioned but the "out-of-shape" rap has persisted since he arrived three years ago. He was understudy to Luka Garza so he knows first hand what it takes to be competitive in this league. I'm pretty sure Fran and Josh had candid discussions before he returned from the portal. Three years is a long time. I had a bad case of Covid in February '21 but decided to get off the couch April and trained to run a half marathon in September. I'm just going to assume its a medical condition.

Not necessarily. Payton was really coming on defensively toward the end of last season. He needs to improve his lateral quickness but he uses his length and anticipation well to make up for it. He will struggle against quicker players, especially on the outside, but he can use his length to help make up for that. He has the size to play inside and he has a nose for rebounding that this team needs.

Well....you are not going to find too many players if anyone that would compare to Luka's training habits or conditioning.....Luka could write a best practice book on skills training and conditioning for BIGs ....that is not a fair comparable for any big.

Players evolve at their own pace, especially bigs. Too many examples to share. I did read though from one of Frantheman's articles he posted about Edney at PU and they are hoping he can handle more minutes this year with conditioning and minutes with Trevion Williams gone.....

What few practice clips that are out there with this team, the ones I've seen with Josh, I see a kid getting up and down the court at a good clip and making some plays....this is all I want from Josh but will take much more.

Sounds like Iowa can finish top 7 in the Big 10

On the media day interview he had with Tom, Payton made it seem like there was a bit of a struggle guarding the 2 guard spot. I think if you play him at the 3 or 4 spot, I think he can be a solid defender for the reasons you stated.

I would also add that if he plays the 2 guard spot, it kind of limits his offense rebounding because you can't forget floor balance.

Don't know if my memory is right, but he seems much slimmed down from 2 years ago. Am I right?
The videos are from summer 2021. He subsequently was injured/sick and lost conditioning again. He's always going to have a struggle until he gets himself on a better diet.

Fran brought back Ogundele because he struck out in recruiting and in portal
That's about the most negative take anyone could have.

The other take is that Iowa wanted him to come back because they know what he can do and what his potential is. As far as I know, he is the first Iowa player to announce they were leaving/entering the portal that McC has recruited back. That says a lot more to me than your guess.
