Seriously Can't Believe He's Coming Back Next Year...

Yeah it is pretty amazing that he is coming back and if he continues to work hard like I imagine he will he could be even better.

That. Was. Awesome.

He won't get 8 again next year; if he stays healthy, he will get MORE.

It's the type of thing that makes sports great. It's borderline irresponsible for him to come back, because he has so little to prove, but damnit I love it

Seriously what's the scenario where he improves his draft stock enough to justify losing a year of pay? Let's say he's a third rounder today - if he's a late first rounder is that enough? (I don't actually know the answer - jumping a round might be worth the year under NBA contracts because of guarantees, but not sure on NFL).

And what would that 3rd to 1st round type year look like? He's not going to get more athletic... So does he bulk up a bit and become more of a shutdown corner?

Maybe he wants to play 1 more year of football before it becomes his true job?
Maybe he has built a very tight bond with his teammates/friends and wants 1 more season with them?
Maybe he thinks they have a good chance at making a run for the cfp?
Maybe he simply didn't want to go out the way the RB ended(or both bowl games for that matter)

There are more things than money motivating his decision and that does NOT make him irresponsible.

There are more important things than money(not to say I don't like money :D ) Next year could be the greatest time of his life and not even "Bill Gates money" is going to buy that for him!

I assume he has insurance against a major injury...not having that would be irresponsible. Then again, I think the ncaa should be providing that to him anyways(though I doubt they do).

Maybe he didn't like the projections he was hearing and thought he could improve his position in the draft with another excellent year. It's going to be tough for him to top this one, but I think the entire team understands now what they have to do to improve. So King and the Hawkeyes probably believe that they can and will improve. They proved it to themselves this past year.

I also think part of it is the degree. I was the first in my immediate family and one of few in my extended family to earn a bachelor's. To me it just seemed like the thing to do, but it was a big deal for my parents when I walked.

Another part of it might be unfinished business with the Hawkeyes. The only big difference in personnel between this year and last year was starting CJ at QB. Everyone on the team stepped up in a big way this year and that ride had to be incredible for everyone on the team. Then there was the postseason. Maybe winning at Iowa is just a lot of damn fun and he wants one more crack at it.

I remember seeing a video of an interview of King before last season and he specifically mentioned getting his degree as one of his goals.

8 is a pretty big number

So is 29. He has been posting amazing interception counts for years. His personal best for a season is 12 his junior year of high school. He had 10 as a SOPHOMORE in high school - incredible.

Here are his amazing high school stats, for those that haven't read them:

Career - -established Michigan high school record with 29 career interceptions . . . set school record for career rushing yards . . . rushed for 2,360 yards and scored 33 touchdowns as a senior . . . recorded 56 tackles and seven interceptions as a senior . . . rushed for 1,610 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior, with 49 tackles and 12 interceptions on defense . . . rushed for 811 yards and nine touchdowns as a sophomore, with 44 tackles and 10 interceptions on defense . . . team captain as junior and senior . . . competed on three teams that advanced to state playoffs, including regional championship as a senior . . . helped prep team post three-year record of 32-6 . . . four-year letterman in track, competing in sprint events and relays.

If teams throw at him I'll be surprised, on the flip side Mabin has 2 years under his belt....

Although I was admittedly down at times on Mabin early in the year, the case can definitely be made that he played better than King the last handful of games, exciting to think about

Mabin really improved throughout the year and is now a good CB with the chance next year to be a very good corner. I think we maybe see a defense next year that takes a few more chances on blitzes with Parker knowing he has two very good corners out there to cover up mistakes. This defense has a chance to be really special even without Ott.

I think King's mom really wanted him to get his degree cause she knows if NFL doesn't work out he has a great fallback option.

Of course all your maybes may be true. It's certainly more than a business decision.

I zeroed in on the draft scenario because someone said he was disapointed where he was slotted. And you mention insurance, but this wasn't even what I was talking about (there's always a chance of injury and yes he will be insured).

What's borderline irresponsible that people forget is he's giving up a year of pay. If he's successful in the league he still might only get 5-10 years so that's 10-20% of his money. Freaking Bon Sanders only got 8 years.

No money is NOT everything and I think it's awesome he's coming back. Not just because he's a Hawkeye, but because he's willing to make that sacrifice.
