Say what you want about the wide receiver room, but man that guy showed last week that he can make some really spectacular catches.
That was one helluva catch & made Cade look like a decent passer. Love how he laid out full extension & was able to hang on to the ball & complete the reception. That was very nice!Say what you want about the wide receiver room, but man that guy showed last week that he can make some really spectacular catches.
I thought it showed how not good of a passer Cade is. Anderson had him beat by 2 steps and if Cade just puts some air under it instead of line driving it, Anderson walks in for the score. Instead, Anderson is forced to lay out. Great play by him. That was one helluva catch & made Cade look like a decent passer. Love how he laid out full extension & was able to hang on to the ball & complete the reception. That was very nice!
Add VanderZee and it’s not bad at all, Anderson and Gill both have a year left right?Honestly.....Anderson, Howard, and Buie make a pretty decent WR starter kit.
I know Anderson does....I can't recall offhand about Gill. The other thing I learned yesterday is that Wetjen can also come back for his Covid year next year.Add VanderZee and it’s not bad at all, Anderson and Gill both have a year left right?
Fans continually downgrade our wide receiver talent but miss the boat IMO. We just have young inexperienced talent at WR which will only get better. Finally solidifying the quarterback position should further their development.Add VanderZee and it’s not bad at all, Anderson and Gill both have a year left right?

They are not top of the league, but they are better than Iowa has put out there the past 3 seasons. If they can get an at least average for the league QB with mobility (? That might be Sullivan) then Iowa could have an average for the B1G passing game. And average for them in that sphere would be a monumental leap forward.Honestly.....Anderson, Howard, and Buie make a pretty decent WR starter kit.
Lester likes spreading the ball around and getting his young receivers involved. Buie and Howard have both looked good in a limited role so far. I think guys like playing in this offense and we will see less attrition going forward than what we have become accustomed to.It's keeping them that is the problem. If they don't see the field much early, they bolt.
This is a great point! I cannot remember what game it was early in the season, but I went back and charted the yardage vs. personnel groups and by far and away the majority of our damage came with 12 personnel with Lachey and Ostrenga. Especially running the ball. I think Ostrenga's injury is much more impactful than is being given credit for.Gill, Anderson and VanderZee make a solid 3 WR set. With Ostrenga out, we've gone from mostly 12 personnel to 11 with those 3 guys.
The Iowa bio for Wetjen makes it look like he's a true senior and also didn't play during 2022. Technically he could have 2 years if I'm reading that correctly (although they don't list a redshirt for that season).I know Anderson does....I can't recall offhand about Gill. The other thing I learned yesterday is that Wetjen can also come back for his Covid year next year.
Gill is listed as a JR on the depth chart, so one would assume he has atleast 1 more year leftI know Anderson does....I can't recall offhand about Gill. The other thing I learned yesterday is that Wetjen can also come back for his Covid year next year.
Resar is moving to WR, Graves, Nwankpa are possibly gone as well (adding to the outgoing). So next year does it look something like this? (not accounting for portal incoming/outgoing):
QB: Sully, Lainez/Resar
RB: Moulton/Jaz
WR: Wetjen/Gill/Howard/Buie/RVZ/Anderson
TE: Ostrenga, Ortwerth, (probably Hoffman?)
OL: Pieper, Lauck/Dotzler, Leighton Jones, Myslinski, Stephens, Dunker?
DT: Graves, Pittman
DE: Allen, Hurkett, Llewelyn
LB: Harrell, Sharar, Rexroth
Cash: Entringer
CB: Lee/Hall/Nestor/Watson
S: Nwankpa, Lutmer
K: Dakin, Stevens
Where is Nwankpa going?Resar is moving to WR, Graves, Nwankpa are possibly gone as well (adding to the outgoing).
I think given our OC's track record, that position will be the one most to watch in terms of year to year growth.Fans continually downgrade our wide receiver talent but miss the boat IMO. We just have young inexperienced talent at WR which will only get better. Finally solidifying the quarterback position should further their development.
Neither one should go pro and they're not transferring unless Nwankpa somehow gets passed on the depth chart for poor play........Resar is moving to WR, Graves, Nwankpa are possibly gone as well (adding to the outgoing).
DT: Graves, Pittman
DE: Allen, Hurkett, Llewelyn
LB: Harrell, Sharar, Rexroth (in particular)
Cash: Entringer
CB: Lee/Hall/Nestor/Watson
S: Nwankpa, Lutmer
IMHO Gill is the best WR we have. Anderson did make a fantastic catch, but I seem to recall him dropping one between the numbers as well. In his defense, he probably was shocked that an Iowa QB threw it that well! I do think we don’t have enough data on any WR at this point due of the last 3 horrible QBs we have had. At least we have moved away from fielding walkons which is a step in the right direction. I also think Lester needs to work Wetjen in wherever he can….(stating the obvious I know).😎Honestly.....Anderson, Howard, and Buie make a pretty decent WR starter kit.
agreed! Painful to think, but (once again) if that was on the money it's a touchdown. That was one helluva catch & made Cade look like a decent passer. Love how he laid out full extension & was able to hang on to the ball & complete the reception. That was very nice!
Pro, and it's that simple. His pff ratings have been decent, it is going to take some NIL money to get him back. His size and speed make him a decent prospect, the only thing going for the hawks is it's a deep year at safety for the draft.Where is Nwankpa going?
Should would be the key word.Neither one should go pro and they're not transferring unless Nwankpa somehow gets passed on the depth chart for poor play........
Nope. Anderson was targeted 3 times. The long one. Another diving catch out of bounds in the end zone right after that. And then Sullivan misfired on an out pattern that wasn't close.IMHO Gill is the best WR we have. His lack of performance is also going for the Hawks. He's no where near ready for the NFL, pff be damned.Pro, and it's that simple. I wonder if it was as Gill I saw then, did Anderson have a bad drop the game before though? TiaNope. Anderson was targeted 3 times. The long one. Another diving catch out of bounds in the end zone right after that. And then Sullivan misfired on an out pattern that wasn't close.
There were no bad drops, but Gill did have a catchable hot one go right through his hands on a 3rd down pass from Sullivan.
How long have we been saying that? And why can’t Weitjen get on the field as a receiver and get the ball 3-4 times a game?Fans continually downgrade our wide receiver talent but miss the boat IMO. We just have young inexperienced talent at WR which will only get better. Finally solidifying the quarterback position should further their development.
Really!!! X needs to get some picks and a lot of pass break ups to leave early. Doesnt he have another season?Where is Nwankpa going?
Say what you want about the wide receiver room, but man that guy showed last week that he can make some really spectacular catches.
The room was completely bare a few years ago. It's better now. I've said all along that the offense was so broken that it was difficult to evaluate any one of these position groups. Has the oline improved that much or is it a function of an OC with a much more effective offense that keeps defenses from diagnosing the plays? They certainly look better and are playing together better as a unit. Is the passing offense still completely broken or has it just been led by a very inefficient QB? I believe it to be the latter. I have seen open receivers that our QB has not. I have seen way more errant throws than drops this year. The more I watch games live, the more I believe that the WRs are not the problem.
We've had the best play from our wideouts this season that we've seen in a good while. Weitjen impacts the game in a huge way in the return game and the coaches likely want to see him focus on that first. When Wetjen does come into the game on offense he provides an additional weapon the defense may not have seen coming. I like using him situationally and like on special teams he usually makes a positive impact. How long have we been saying that? And why can’t Weitjen get on the field as a receiver and get the ball 3-4 times a game?
I agree, but don't underestimate Graves. He's getting double teamed a lot.Neither one should go pro and they're not transferring unless Nwankpa somehow gets passed on the depth chart for poor play........
I’d be surprised if either of them left.Resar is moving to WR, Graves, Nwankpa are possibly gone as well (adding to the outgoing).
Wetjen is a walk-on, but I take the point. Except for Gill, they were all signed under the previous OC, so it’s good to see that TL can find ways for them to be successful.IMHO Gill is the best WR we have. Anderson did make a fantastic catch, but I seem to recall him dropping one between the numbers as well. In his defense, he probably was shocked that an Iowa QB threw it that well! I opine Kaden is short and has short arms, thus hard to get him open. The coaches already like him and trust him with the ball deep in Iowa territory. Kaden isn't just fast but has good moves and change of direction. Love for the guy to have a blowout rest of his career. How long have we been saying that? And why can’t Weitjen get on the field as a receiver and get the ball 3-4 times a game?
Has Graves finished his Master's curriculum? I recall that was a major must for him.I agree, but don't underestimate Graves. He's getting double teamed a lot.
