Shogun

Two episodes down. I’m in!
First 2 episodes were great. I love me some 17th century Samurai politics.

My only complaint is the use of the English language. For some reason I find it very odd that when they say they are going to talk in Portuguese, they continue talking in English. It takes me out of it for a second because it's a bit of a mind f*ck. When they speak in Japanese, we get subtitles. Why not just speak Portuguese with subtitles?

Shogun takes me back to my all time favorite teacher. Mr. Boyle, 7th grade social studies. We were studying European Geography at the time the original Shogun aired. I think it debuted on a Sunday. On Monday, a kid asked Mr. Boyle if he watched Shogun last night. They got in a conversation about it. Suddenly Mr. Boyle says that he's changing plans and this week we would be studying Japanese History Samurai Warriors for the rest of the week. Our assignment was to watch Shogun. So pre-internet he gathers information on 1600s Japan and we study it for the week. He just scrapped his lessons and switched directions. It was AWESOME. He was so excited to be able to have us study it. Great memory.

Back when teachers could simply teach and not be micromanaged for every moment.

I've read it's really good but I kinda want to read the book before diving into the show. So I'll probably start watching sometime next year
The book is so good that I’d recommend waiting to watch. It’s is long, but you’ll fly through it.

Clavell did a masterful job of building tension. You don’t know whose side anyone is really on until the end.

I loved the original. I'm hoping the release of this remake will encourage some streaming service to carry the Chamberlain version.
I did too. I was very young when I watched it but remember being mexmorized and have always wanted to get back to it. Same with "House of Dies Drear" movie I stumbled upon one day (that has nothing to do with this).

Me, too. It's excellent, so far.

One of the things that emerged more clearly in the 2nd episode was the religious conflict of the times between Catholics and Protestants. Ah, the good old days.

I'm not familiar with the Blackthorn actor from previous work, but sometimes I swear he sounds like Russell Crowe.

I'm glad they are focusing on both the internal struggles in Japan and also the geopolitical rivalries of the day. Maybe I've just forgotten but I don't think the original Shogun spent much time on geopolitics.

Of course that might not last, but I hope it does. Both are interesting.

Sounds like Crowe and really looks like Chamberlain did.

That threw me off at first, but I finally caught on.

I like it because I hate reading subtitles, but I understand if others don't feel the same.

I love how they tie things together so far.

See him with a falcon.
See him with a small note talking about the pirate/ barbarian washed ashore.
See the man in the village sending message by falcon later to tie it all together.

I like that stuff.

Is the book a hard read??

I was in grad school at the time. Half the students were walking around saying things in broken Japanese for the duration of the show.

In my vague recollection, one of the appeals of the show was that the viewer was forced to learn some Japanese at the same time as Blackthorn did, albeit with less pressure (and less success).

This remake isn't demanding that from us - which is probably smart.

The politics are what makes the story.

Nobunaga (Goroda in the book) was Julius Caesar. Tokugawa (Toranaga) was Augustus Caesar.

Did anyone else not enjoy last nights episode?

Idk, something about it just felt...off.

I'm sure I'm in the minority on this one and maybe I need to rewatch it.
I thought it was great. I read the book over 30 years ago, and saw the mini-series about that long ago as well. So, I am familiar with the story, but I don't remember the details very well, and it seemed like a pretty faithful adaptation of the book.

I’ll be honest- I rewatched episode 2 after starting so 3- felt like I missed something. Specifically, about 10 min to episode 3 a female is shipped off with that group, and said she lost her child and husband- and had NO idea who that was. Upon rewatching still don’t tbh.

Also, the sailing /blockage thing didn’t track for me as it was shown.

That said, immediately looking forward to so 4. I like the “universe” they have going on.

He was the guy who killed himself and the baby in episode 1 for speaking out of turn at the council meeting. That was his wife and mother of the baby. Remember he said he wanted her to be the last one to hold the baby?
