Should Detroit Mercy play in the post-season just to break a record?

Guys who played four seasons didn't come close.

PLAYER, SCHOOL YEARS (SEASONS) POINTS

That was my initial thought. Then 5 seasons vs 3, seasons most likely have a lot more games too.

Maravich averaged 44 pts per game over 3 years to get to his total. Ain't nobody EVER gonna touch that.
And there was no three point line. It is one of the greatest records of all of sports and I am glad this kid came up short since he played 5 years. Anyone breaking college records playing 5, 6 or even 7 years due to Covid and injury rule changes needs to have their stats reduced to their four best years. Period.

I think the addition of the 3 point line is the biggest factor and should add the biggest asterisk. I wonder if anyone has ever determined how many points Maravich would have if the 3 point line was there when he played.

I found this.

“Amazing [thing] about Pete is … 44 points per game, in his career, for three straight years in an era with no 3-point line. Dale Brown, who coached LSU after Press and Pete were there, went back and charted all the games with the running score – Maravich free-throw, Maravich 22-foot jumper, Maravich lay-up – and he calculated that with the current college 3-point line rule at 19’9” Pete Maravich would have averaged 13 3-point makes per game, which would have given him a career average of 57.0 points per game under today’s rules! That guy was UN-BE-LIEVABLE! We love him, we miss him terribly, what a great man, what a great human being.”

He played five full years. That’s an asterisk in my book.

Post season isn’t a big deal IMO. The fact that he played five full seasons is where the debate begins and ends.m

Records don’t seem to mean as much as they use to.

Maravich played in a segregated conference.
Ya, that's the reason for his record. Oh, by the way, how many players have exceeded his numbers not playing in segregated conferences? He did it in 3 years without a three point line or shot clock. So stick with your racist BS as usual.

According to the SEC Wiki page; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southeastern_Conference

It was not until 1966 that African Americans first participated in an SEC athletic contest, and the first black scholarship athletes did not play in the SEC until the 1967–68 school year.

Maravich's time at LSU;

CollegeLSU (1967–1970)
Vanderbilt had one black player while Maravich was at LSU. Most of the other teams in the SEC didn’t sign their first black players until 1970 or 1971, after Maravich graduated.

Not to mention Pete played at LSU and had to compete with SEC teams. Detroit, Campbell, LaSalle and Portland certainly did not.

If that's true, that's a cartoonish video game number. Truly mind bottling.

Again the left just can't resist playing the race card. Once again, he did it in 3 years without a shot clock and without a three point line, but keep making excuses.
Not an excuse. And you don’t need to go back that far to see how the game has changed. Also I am not a lefty and please pinpoint where race was brought up in my post.

So then Davis would own actual record and Pistol Pete owns old timey out of date rules record.
This isn't old rules versus new rules. All the rules changes...freshmen eligible, shot clock, 3-pt shot...have favored higher scoring. And still no one came close to touching this record. It took giving a player five years to make it possible - Davis played over 35 minutes/game in 144 total games...and still missed the record. That allowance is gone for players starting now. I like the idea of giving them their four best years for career records. Davis four best = 3,127.

Brady, Manning, Lebron all hold/held records bc they played way longer than everyone else, why should it be different for him? How is it his fault a committee gave him 1 more game?

If the record falls it falls, no asterisks.

Go back to the kiddy table abs...the grownups are talking sports.

Those players are pros and can play as long as their careers let them. College should have a limit because participation is limited . IMHO.

You really don't see the difference between college and pro sports here? You think Tom Brady in the NFL is the same thing as Maravich in college?
