Should Detroit Mercy play in the post-season just to break a record?

Brady, Manning, Lebron all hold/held records bc they played way longer than everyone else, why should it be different for him? How is it his fault a committee gave him 1 more game?

If the record falls it falls, no asterisks.
Because ten years from now, another player could play longer than Lebron. Can a player starting next year play for five years? Davis got to play in twice as many games as Maravich because of a fluke that a miniscule number of players will ever get.

And this is all immaterial if Detroit Mercy is finished for the season.

Again the left just can't resist playing the race card. Once again, he did it in 3 years without a shot clock and without a three point line, but keep making excuses.
If you read race into this comment and not a comment on how the modern game is played, then maybe it's you that's racist.

Apparently players in that era didn’t get mugged and constantly hacked like the modern version of basketball…

Every record of all time should have an asterisk! It's just not faaaaair!
Several asterisks.

The best record is the most asterisks.

--- BREAKING NEWS! ---

John Smith just broke the record for most asterisks in a college career. It was thought he had only tied the asterisk record, but since it took him 6 years, that earned him the tie-breaking asterisk!

Asked what he planned next, Smith said he was hot on the trail of breaking the semicolon record.

It's not fair.. 😫😫😫

"I feel like I got cheated out of something that they can't ever give back to me".

Well...you were 14-19, you know. And you were given a fifth year to chase the record. "Cheated" might not be the word you're looking for.

Davis played in 61 more games and had the benefit of the 3 point shot but it's not fair??

Everyone gets cheated. It's passed down to our youth now. In the last 2 years I have said to kids multiple times, "You didn't get cheated. You just got beat." It's becoming a real thing.

Interestingly, I discovered that Pete took more shots in his three years than Davis took in five. That's how you average 44 points for a career. :D
Yep. Coach’s son who always had the green light and never passed up a shot.

The 3-point shot is a non-issue. The game was much faster paced back then, which more than cancels out the 3-point advantage. The average team points per game in the SEC during Maravich’s senior season was over 80. The average points per game in today’s NCAA is around 68.

I'm not so sure about that. Maravich's shots were charted and he would've averaged over 55 points a game with the 3 point shot. Davis wouldn't be even close if it was available.

The point is that even though he didn’t have the 3-point shot, he played in an era that featured more wide open play and more scoring. If he played today he would have the benefit of the 3-point shot but he would also have far fewer scoring opportunities.

Even without the 3-point shot, teams averaged about 12 points more per game when he played than they do now. And, as TarHeel pointed out, Maravich took more shots in 3 years than Davis took in 5.

Maravich took an average of 38 shots per game during his college career. The entire Detroit-Mercy team averaged 61 shots this season.

Slower pace equals fewer possessions equals fewer shots equals fewer points.

You've said that? Gosh, I wouldn't have guessed that, but it shows there is hope.

More than once. It really started the last couple of years. I also address the "They're bragging!" whining. "No they aren't. They're happy they did something well. I'd be happy too. What you should say is good job and we'll get you next game." I don't have much tolerance for any of that. I usually add something like, "Were they dancing in your face saying we won, you lost? No? Then this is a you problem."

Yeah, I'm a little different and I won't deny it.

If you take Davis' three highest scoring season, he is still 500 points behind the great Oscar Robertson.
