Should have gone for the win

Garza had 4 fouls. They should have shot the 3 and let Garza tip in if missed

That was option 1 and there would have been very very little time for a tip with 1.3 left.

Fredrick ran off of two screens and wasn’t open. Garza was the safety outlet. Everyone bitches about Iowa never using time outs...... Guess how many Iowa had there with 1.3 in case Fredrick wasn’t open? Yep, none.

Connor takes it out. Kriener strong side block. Weez strong side… hold on I'll draw this up. Play I ran back when I coached in SF.

1. Kriener back screen for Weez, important to step to Garza first to set up screen angle, and maybe get defense to eye Garza for a beat. Weez look for lob and—very important—calls for it like he thinks he's open as hell. Slight chance this draws CJ's man in and maybe just maybe CJ can get a three out of this first action.

2. Garza downscreen for Kriener, Weez turns like he might go get Garza at wing if his guys's eyes move that way he might be able to slip but the timing is tricky on this, Garza has to take a hard step at rim to set up his screen, draw his guy down a step honoring what looks like a rim cut, goes and screens Kriener's guy but sort of a brush/bump screen like really Garza is looking to get a shot for himself in the corner. CJ needs to call for the ball during this action to occupy his guy from being a weak side communicator, diagnosing what's happening. All that is really happening here is a screen the screener play so a good weak side talk guy will recognize it if he's comfortable taking his vision off of his corner guy.

3. Play really is for Kriener, using two primary scorers as decoys with best shooter in corner to stretch D. Worst case scenario all switches and Kriener has a shot over a shorter guy. But assuming this is a late-clock set that is practiced the guys know what to do on switches, there is a counter. Basically counter is the switching is recognized on the first screen, Kriener then screens for Garza rather than Garza for Kriener, except that he (Kriener) breaks it off and slips back to ball calling for it like his life depends on it—and either he's going to get a 12- to 15-foot angle shot or he's going to draw enough attention that Garza might get a three out of it, or maybe CJ is forgotten about.

I got a good shot out of this damn near every time. And, like I dunno 75% of the basketball world I ran various screen the screener and flex variations so it was something my guys knew how to execute.

Only thing I don't like about this is Iowa's best cutter, CJ, is kind of relegated to a stationary role, unless of course his guy relaxes his vision.

Anyways I wanted Kriener to get the last shot, either a three out of something like this or something at the rim assuming Garza can keep Kofi occupied on him. Kriener is long a hell, not expected to be first option, and soft hands.

I said the same thing the other night. You had 5 possible 3 point shooters on the floor- why play for overtime with your best player with 4 fouls? In my head, I thought they would use CJ and JW as decoys and get Kriener a look from 3.

Hindsight is 20/20, but....I think our best chance was a 3 attempt as we came down the court after the missed free throw. Re-watched, and not must of a chance to shoot, although Connor had a momentary decent shot.

Fran is great at drawing up in bounds plays. One of the best IMO. Sometimes the opposing team takes the first couple of options away. As diagrammed very well, Iowa was looking for a three. If you don't have a timeout, your 5 sec to throw it in is winding down, and there is less than 2 sec left to shoot, you go with the only available option. You have one of the best passers in college BB throwing the ball in, and maybe the best low-post scorer in college BB getting the ball. The only question I had is whether Luka could have caught, shot faked, and maybe gotten free throws or even an and-one. Give Illannoy some credit for defending the play well.

Fran is one of the best. There were multiple options for the win, and smartly Illinois sold out to take them away. Even if you get caught holding the curler it’s only two free throws. Kofi is a good defensive player and made a play.

This is the case. Iowa had no timeouts after the missed FT by Ayo. Conor brought the ball up, and Iowa ran action away from the play to try and free up Frederick. Good defense/mugging whatever you want to call it, but it wasn't open. Conor tried to make a play getting a score, which he had to do with the clock running down. Then the ball went out of bounds and the last play under the basket was run. In hindsight, could have run some sort of screen and roll on the initial pass down the floor.

What's funny is people just assuming Iowa could get any look they wanted and were specifically going for that.

For fukc sake of course they wanted to get CJ a look for 3.

Theres this thing in the way called a defender, who was not allowing CJ to get open.

Yes, it's not as if this is a game of horse where you get to choose your shot. End of game situations are where it often times comes down to a player getting his own shot (not always, but often). Conor got a reasonably good shot in the lane. It didn't go in. Defense in those situations is playing super right, holding and grabbing if necessary. Illinois was up 2 so just to tie Iowa would have to make 2 FT's. That is preferred to giving up an open look at a 3.

Illinois gets credit for chest bumping well on Garza. Don't know if I would call it defense.

I know Garza got called for displacing in Minnesota for doing WAY WAY less. That sent Minnesota to the line for a possible tie. Funny how it all shakes out.
