Should McCaffery free up a scholarship....

So as of right now if Jones gets a 6th year all scholarships are taken. If Jones doesn't get a 6th year Baer would get his and all scholarships are still taken. From what I read on these sties Fran is still recruiting players for 2017. So that either means the coaching staff already knows a current player is leaving or they intend on having Connor walk on if the right player comes along.

I get this if that is Conner's and Fran's choice. I don't agree in the people that automatically think he should walk on because his dad is the coach and they have money. He earned it himself so let him decide.

Also, the coaches have to keep recruiting and staying in contact with people; just the nature of the business. CBB is very fluid with players coming and going so I am glad that Fran and the staff stay on top of things.

Agree, no reasons whatsoever to start another thread about this.

The guy who started it is probably trolling.

However, I am interested to know if there is actually a difference in benefits for a sholorship player vs a walkon. I was under the impression that this was no longer the case. It would seem to be an anti common sense policy if it was the case.
Right, beating a dead horse.

Seriously??? Conner's Choice? Probably not even close. Dad's choice....Bingo! This is the answer. And everyone suggesting that he walk on assumes that Dad has more than enough money to cover the cost. Fran is the one making the decision. If Dad wants to increase his chance of winning the Big 10 and a NC, then he explores this option. And he probably does not come on to these boards to get his advice. So maybe everyone should back off and let it play out.

So, if we want Baer to get a scholly, someone has to leave or Connor would have to walk-on. If we want Baer to get a scholly and bring on an additional player in Connor's class, someone has to leave and... Connor has to walk-on. Is this correct?

Depending on Jones and his attempt at a sixth year. If he is denied, there is one open spot in 2017.

YES> My Daughter goes to Iowa and is a junior, I paid every penny of her tuition out of my pocket, no LOAN to pay back. I don't Make near the Cash Fran makes and I am absolutely sure he could afford it. His Job is to be a successful Basketball coach at Iowa and to do that He could help his cause by paying His kids Tuition to open up a Scholly for another great basketball kid that could help the program and might not have the financial opportunity that Conner has had. It is a win win. Plus if he keeps winning he will get a pay raise and that will offset his out of pocket.

I fully trust Fran to do what he feels is best for the program, So while we as fans can speculate on what we feel is the best thing to do, Fran has the pulse of the program and will fully understand the ramifications of how he handles his son. Just trust him to do what's right for the program, I think he has earned that trust.

if some of you would truly follow Fran his players gradually gets more minutes the older they get.

right now the Freshman are not getting very many minutes, IA loses 4 SR's and that means there will be plenty of minutes available, so to those wanting to run players off so that Baer can get a scholarship. its not going to happen, these players knew what they were getting into.

these kids don't look like the type to just give up, but more like the type to be a TEAM players something that seems to be a foreign concept to some of you.

all some of you want to do is Crean players.

Not my place as its Fran's kid and Fran's team. If it were me, I would give Connor a scholly but I can see both sides.
You absolutely play the cards you're dealt to the best of your ability. Iowa is in a unique situation, a situation I would guess every DI Coach in the country would LOVE to have!

This is a no-brainer to keep ALL your options open and let the chips fall where they may.

It's absolutely Conner's choice. Do you have kids?

I'm pretty sure the rules were changed a couple of years ago so that walk-ons do receive the same bennies as scholarship players (other than the scholarship).

That said, I have 0 problem with Connor having a scholarship.

IMO this is the only thing that matters.

If this is the case, which it seems that it is, then Fran will obviously make whatever move benefits his team the most in a given situation.

Because what ever move benefits his team the most obviously benefits him the most in all ways including financially.

No, Connor deserves a scholarship and will get one somewhere else. To those who think fran should pay because he makes good money...that's dumb.

It's actually not the point.

Putting the best possible team on the floor and therefore maximizing the number of wins actually increases Fran's bottom line in the long run.

This subject doesn't really need to be discussed if you operate on the assumption that Fran is a smart person and will make the correct business decision if and when he comes to that bridge.

Until it gets answered? Just saying.

lol, ... well, no one but McCaffery or other guys on the coaching staff can answer the question in any reliable way. All the rest is conjecture. So, if you want is wild speculation then I will give you the answer: Fran McCaffery will no longer give scholarships to any players; he will ask every recruit to walk-on and just hope that they are willing to pay their own way for the privilege of playing for him (which, really, is a privilege). Alternatively, McCaffery will accept a dozen letters of intent next year and try to give each recruit a scholarships, forcing the NCAA to come in and say, "You can't do that" to which McCaffery says "I will crush your head with a chair if you do not let me do what I want." Shall I keep playing this ridiculous game???
