SIAM: Cook's buddy, stud FB recruit Trout says Cook is leaving after soph. year

Sounds to me like these two are dreaming about a future in the NBA/NFL back in high school, and this kid thinks Cook has the ambition/body to get there.

A motivated Cook all summer and next season will be fun to watch.

Tyler may go pro after next year, but if he does it won't be in the NBA. Just as he wasn't close to one and done this year he's not ready. 6'9" NBA players need to be able to play the 3 or rebound against bigger MEN.
Tyler isn't close to a three and for his size plays almost soft off the glass. He's a long ways away from being league ready

U guys are probably gonna yell at me and that's fine. But the fact that a guy with the athleticism of a Tyler Cook type that isn't a one and done either shows what a bad developer Fran is or that Cook is lazy and doesn't work hard enough. It HAS TO be one of them

Or, perhaps, Fran is lazy and doesn't work hard enough and Cook is bad at developing. 2 more options that it has to be.

If only coaches, players, humans weren't human. It's too bad that humans are, you know, unique and not all the same.

Can't believe some posters are seriously considering Tyler is even close to NBA ready at this point in time. Don't get me wrong he's got good potential and the opportunity is there but there's a mountain of work to do before he's seriously considered a first round prospect. Have any of you seen the skillfully polished athletes that populate NBA rosters? Tyler is a great kid but he's got a loooooooong ways to go folks. I think this is just an easy way for his former classmate to say he doesn't want to play football at Iowa.

I feel sorry for people who go thru life looking to dump on others (Fran and Cook, being all of 19 years old) in regard to matters about which they know little or nothing.... or on the otherhand, people who have so little to do in their lives that they troll on sites for teams they have no interest in!

Honestly Cook was a beast at the end of the season. I think that finger injury really set him back on defense and rebounding. He was regularly getting 8 or 9 rpg and playing solid defense once he got into a groove. I could see him having a very good year next season. Idk if it will be good enough to garner first round attention. Either way he clearly has the most nba potential on the team. It will be interesting to see how he develops.

I really dont put much stock in what a high school friend who plays football says. I'm sure TC has aspirations to play professional basketball some day. Being selfish, I hope it doesnt happen til 2020.

How about comparing him to Iowa's last 4 first team all B1G players? None are really playing the same position as Cook, but White has not made the NBA yet, Marble got a few games and Uthoff has made it at the end of the season. Jok is not even being mentioned on the draft boards that I am aware of. Where does Cook compare to these guys? I believe he has more upside at least at the college level, but is still a ways behind each of them. As previously mentioned, he needs a shot in the 5-15 ft range to make defenses work against him at a minimim

I wont yell at you but Ill tell you why you are wrong. Tyler Cook isnt that special by NBA standards. He wasnt a one and done no matter where he went. He may look special to you, as an Iowa fan, because we havent seen someone like him in a while. Thats the truth.

Those of you honestly discussing this are wasting your time. It was a comment from a high school football recruit who was just pumping up a fellow graduate from his high school. Nothing more to it than that.

Who was better as a Freshman: Tyler Cook or Tyler Smith?

Tyler Smith, 6' 7" 210, was the 43 ranked player nationally in the 2006 class and averaged 15 ppg his freshman year before transferring to Tennessee.

Tyler Cook, 6' 8" 240, was the 74th ranked player nationally in the 2016 class and averaged 12 ppg his freshman year in Fran's high scoring offense.

He's clearly an NBA player. He'll challenge for B1G POT next year and leave for the draft.

Tyler Smith, 6' 7" 210, was the 43 ranked player nationally in the 2006 class and averaged 15 ppg his freshman year before transferring to Tennesse. He was at a severe disadvantage having Licklighter as a coach who wanted to keep scores as low as possible.

Smith played one season under Alford before they both left. He had the better Fr year, IMO.

Cook has great potential, but IMHO he would have to show tremendous improvement in almost all areas next season to even consider a jump to the NBA. It amazes me how any kid with athletic ability but modest basketball success in college is a lock for the NBA.

He's not a top 25 pick. Establish a long range jumper, consistent defense and rebounding and we can talk. Those three things are all very doable assuming he continues to improve scoring around the basket
They play defense in the NBA?

Tyler Smith. Smith was a jump shot and some better off the court judgement away from being a really big time player.

This x 1000. How is it hard to understand that what a college freshmen said to a high school senior might be a bit hyperbolic or optimistic? I'm happy that Cook think he's a future NBA player. If he's in a position to go to the NBA next year, it means he's had a great year and Iowa has had a great year.

Cook is the model for a guy that should stay in school for AT LEAST three years. While he is a really good athlete, he has a long way to go before he is a really good basketball player. Three or four years could make this guy a lottery pick if he works really hard. He has a lot of areas to improve upon.

Unless he gets tired of school or the college game or something off the grid, he's not going pro until after his Junior season, at the very least. I hope he is good enough after next season but I'm not counting on it.

Just for some context, here are some forwards projected to go 25th or later in this year's draft: Jonathon Motley, Caleb Swanigan, Justin Jackson, Semi Ojeleye, Jaron Blossomgame. Not to mention a lot of really good guards, like Frank Mason, Nigel Williams-Goss, Josh Hart, Donovan Mitchell, Sindarius Thornwell.

Cook had a great freshman year, but he's not close to being a first round pick of any kind.

If Swanigan not a top 25 pick, then Cook has a long, long way to go in 1 year

Remember NBA Ready isn't what the NBA drafts on, they draft on potential (especially for guys that enter draft early)
This. The NBA could care less about college awards. Potential, athleticism, etc. It seems like big bodied forwards are becoming a smaller part of nba, but I admittingly am no expert

I love Cook but he would average 20ppg if he could make bunnies. Anything outside a dunk is a circus.

Not one of your better trolling efforts, I'd give it a C-

I doubt he gets drafted in the first round because he gets tired of school. He's got a lot of work to do.

No kidding? Did you watch the last half of the season. Cook was pretty solid scoring on the block with either hand. I believe he ended the season making 18 consecutive shots from the floor. This isn't Woody were talking about here.......
