SIAP - gambling charges dismissed by State of Iowa

That statement from DPS is sure as hell interesting now. Who the hell was legal counsel, secondly did they truly give everything to be reviewed by the county attorneys. Based on the county attorney statements they are saying they were duped and not told of the illegal searches.

"Prior to using the tools provided, the Department of Public Safety conferred with legal counsel to ensure lawful access to and use of the technology. Two county attorney offices also reviewed all relevant investigative information before making the ultimate decision to file charges."

All parties involved need identified… Did Campus PD’s assist who on the campuses were complicit in this invasion of privacy. Students in those dorms whose data was sifted through should also sue. University staff involved or aware should also face punishment for not verifying investigation prior to assisting. They are all guilty and should not be left in a position of power to violate again. Time to find it all out. This was more than 1 guy there is a list of accomplices to this destruction of kids lives

The dci is stonewalling and maintaining all was kosher.
They claim to be mad that story county dropped charges against their wishes.
The taxpayers are gonna pay for state govt incompetence again...thanks Kim and cronies.

This is all on the DCI. Isu and UI PDs were non complicit. Within the DCI several branches one of them is their gaming agents unit. Even more specifically on top of having guys who work in the casinos they incorporated a new unit for online gambling once it was legalized in the state which the agent behind this is a member of.

Question: the charges were dropped due to the illegal start of the investigation correct.
But nobody is denying they were gambling against NCAA. Rules.
Technically they could have lost eligibility without criminal charges.
It seems there are two issues here.
Sure but it’s now fairly undisputed that they were only discovered through illegal means.

This decision in Story County won’t save them from the NCAA and I don’t think anyone is expecting it to. But they’ll certainly sue the state for their resulting punishments and loss of eligibility/pro potential.

So your saying DCI came on campus did this without anyone at UIPD aware? Or IT? Please. I don’t buy that for a second. Independent investigation is needed. We need to know everyone involved.

They took plea deals
Not accurate most did nothing illegal. They should never have been exposed. Noah Shannon was of age to gamble and bet on womens bb. Not illegal. So why did they share that info with NCAA. There info shouldn’t have been released unless they broke a law which many didn’t.

I think same for Nelson Brands, Cassiopi, and Abe Assad.

You realize it’s the year 2023 and we’re talking about online gambling. It’s not like the DCI agent needed to come connect hardwire to their AOL accounts

I think the ridiculous Iowa Sup Ct ruled that the state and its officials CANNOT be sued for violating the constitutional rights of mere citizens like all of us, after the same court with less political judges years ago ruled that of course the state should be able to be sued for wrongful acts when they violate the constitution. Not much legal room filing for the players to sue for negligence since the state would claim they have a right to not be soft on crime and thus are immune. As usual, the elite will get away with abuse of power.

If this was Alabama, one call from Nick Saban would have shut all this down.
It was Alabama that got this ball of shit rolling. Granted it was the baseball coach, but the point remains. DCI started snooping when that story about the coach shutting down his best pitcher and having friends place bets hit.

As to Saban shutting it down, no way. Had you said Harbaugh, I'd likely agreed.

The lawsuits will state the illegal searches caused the State to inform the universities which then had to inform the Ncaa. So the illegal search illegally denied the players their right play and their scholarship money. I doubt they can undue what the Ncaa did to suspend players, a separate case.

The state told the UI about Noah's bet but his bet was against Ncaa rules to the UI had to inform the Ncaa

They didn’t need to be on campus to do it let alone let UIPD know what they are doing. Most agencies investigating stuff don’t always contact local agencies. If you realized how they do this stuff it wasn’t necessary for them to involve them.

The Alabama baseball stuff was bad. Just like these few iowa football guys that bet on their own games. Most of the other guys from both schools didn’t do anything even remotely close to losing a year of eligibility for.

The NSA has been snooping every citizen's phone for a long long time. We're ****ed.

I like how people cry about their DNA. They can get DNA whenever they want. They can get it from sewage from waste we toss out to the curb, from dishes at restaurants, from chewing gum we discard, etc.

And facial recognition, people voluntarily posting photos and vids online all over the place.

Greatest thing that ever happened for national law enforcement is social media.

Why, they don't report to the AG

Will the AG’s office pursue charges against Singer and other DCI agents? I was just at a conference where an Asst Iowa AG spoke (Brenna was scheduled and canceled her appearance) and he talked about the focus of stopping governmental overreach. Their ire, of course, has been directed at the federal government and joining all sorts of politically motivated lawsuits. Will they step up to the plate and go after governmental overreach in Iowa when it involves a department headed by a Reynolds appointee? Or will Brenna choose not to “give them the Bird?”

Let’s see some of that tough talk turn into real action when it impacts Iowans.

We know the answer. I am waiting for further discovery of emails. I am curious what they will find.
