So It's On To Criteria Now, Tied 16-16 Against Nebby...

So how good are the Hawkeyes this year, given that we beat #7 Cornell, #4 Nebby, among others, and you absolutely manhandled us? Should you be #1 or is it a close call?

Interesting to compare some common opponents here.

133: Giraldo gave Cory some problems before Cory settled in and widened the gap. He also appears to have given #9 Montoya a struggle.

141: I've been pretty impressed with Abidin, and it looks like Carton hung with Ashnault quite a bit better.

157: Cooper's win over Lewis looks even better based on how he seems to have had little trouble with #10 Berger.

165: I suspect Wilson was a little over-ranked at #4, but Rhoads was one finished takedown away from beating Perotti, who looks like he beat Wilson pretty convincingly.

184: Impressive win for Gravina over Dudley, who I think was over-ranked at #4 but still tough. Gravina looks like the real deal to me; surprised he wasn't ranked. I assume he will be now.

285: Smith's convincing win over #13 Jenkins makes Stoll's win look even a little better.

I also wonder how much of a home-court advantage there is in wrestling, this being only my second year following it. We wrestled you guys well through two periods, then you throttled us in the final period, which tells me that you're mentally tougher (and perhaps physically), and I'm not sure how much the home crowd helps in the last period.

The home-mat advantage can be huge. Even relatively smaller crowds at Carver can be surprisingly loud and intimidating at times. We've seen lots of Iowa guys do things they probably didn't even think they could do over the years -- lots of surprising upsets, etc. -- thanks in part to the Carver crowd.

Hard to say how much of a difference the home crowd made last night, but it certainly can propel guys to upset wins, and I'm sure it helped Cooper and Stoll to some degree in pulling off theirs.

And by "relatively smaller crowds at Carver," I assume you mean 28,000? ;-)

Agree on all counts. These results give us a nice way to benchmark the Hawks' efforts at 141, 157, 165, 184 and HWT.

Our guys are just in better shape than the guys competing for Rutgers at this point in the season. And that usually shows as a match wears on.

you were reading my mind when you wrote that wwdm, I had same thoughts as yours before I read your post. plus the sueflon match kind of worries me. he could be the the 4th semi finalist at ncaas, I saw some pretty explosive wrestling out of Rutgers, perotti looks way stronger than the year he aa'd. their big problem was they made iowa notice them before they came to town. I think we made it a point to prove who was who

Well.... since our two weakest weights are your two best weights.

It's possible you might not have even scored six points if we had normal strength at those weights. Our next two weakest weights were 157 and 285.

That number doesn't count the two dozen Cheerleaders of course.....

Wont be easy but we're right there with the best schools. Need to show up tournament time!

This year's team is pretty good in the 3rd period. The whole "feed them to the lions thing" really has the guys wrestling harder this year.

Is that new?
Well, you realize I was joking about the lions, right? I will let others weigh in on the third period but I would say that the "Iowa Style" is to push the pace and to wear down the opponent in the third period. I recall a Brent Metcalf/Bubba Jenkins match when Jenkins was broken and could not get up. And there is some bad video to prove it.

And Jenkins was a darn good wrestler. Jenkins came out like a ball of fire and wore in the first period. Fortunately, Jenkins got fixed, transferred to ASU and won a National Championship.

This year's team has a couple of guys who seem to wrestle extra hard and makes me look forward to the 3rd period.

I just thought Brands came up with a new expression. Truth is, I thought it was badass and was kinda jealous.

Here's the deal. Guys read this board and know Brands but most of them are smart enough to not mention it to Tom/Terry, even in a joking manner b/c, well they are a little crazy and Iowa wrestling is full of stories of alleged stories about the coaches acting a little crazy.

Like in the 80s, there was an alleged bus ride home from Ames when Gable had the bus pull over, ordered the wrestlers off, and drove down the road to make the wrestlers run to the bus. And allegedly, the PC Iowa City people were not mad that it was 1) middle of winter/zero degrees or 2) night time but 3) that the wrestlers were running on the side of Interstate 80, which was dangerous.

Now, that story is too crazy to be true, right?

The lions were on the bus waiting for the ones who couldn't run any longer, amarite?
