First serious opponent, I think everyone would agree. And we play at their place. The Golden Eagles dropped their first game in a 83-80 loss to Belmont. They also play Monday night.

Henry Ellenson scored 21 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in his debut. The Freshman was ranked a five star by Rivals. 6'10 and 230lbs, this will be a good test for our post defense possibly with Woody being the first line, and Uhl and Wagner likely the reserves who will be called up if Woody is on the bench.

A little tidbit. Wagner guarded Ellenson in AAU ball in 2014 and the report on the game was Wagner did as well as anybody had in slowing the big man down.

Another name to watch, Luke Fischer, the 6'11" Wisconsin native who played one semester for Indiana and then transferred. So, going back on myself a bit it could be Woody guarding Fischer. Or, want to bet we try a zone? :)

On Friday Marquette was just 6-26 from three. Starter Duane Wilson was 1-8 from three, but last year he shot .358, so we can't lay off him.

A couple more notes. Marquette went only eight deep Friday, and only two of those eight were taller than 6'6". So their size is more illusion if we can get somebody to have to sit. They do have another 6'10" , 250lb frosh who did not play on Friday.

Of the eight that did play, four are freshmen so we've got some experience on our side.

Woodbury has experience against the likes of Hammons of Purdue, Zeller of Indiana, Dawson of MSU, Kaminsky, the big guy on Texas last year, etc etc. While I believe he'll have his hands full with Ellenson, it's not like he hasn't faced any quality bigs before. On the other hand, this is Henry's first major collegiate test against a starter on a team that's won 20+ games three years straight.

As other posters have said, Woodbury will be fine. Defensively he's great at gaining position and I think that he'll do a solid job containing Ellenson.

My concern is for the youngster and newbies in their first major test, and also giving up a lot of offensive rebounds.

As is usually the csse, Marquette will have someone go crazy from 3. Mark it down

Does Woodbury being a Senior mean that he won't be in foul trouble five minutes into the game?

of course not...does it mean that Ellenson wont be either? obviously you missed my point..Ellenson is still a freshman.
.. the way they have been calling fouls I'm not sure what to expect.

From my view, Woody tends to excel defensively against true bigs as opposed to the smaller, quicker 4's. I think he'll be fine defensively.

I'd say it's our dribble drive and 3 point defense that we'll need to be worried about.

I do think Woody's play will be key in this game and for him that means not making the mistakes that get him in foul trouble. If he can keep Ellenson under control I think it makes Marquette very beatable, not only by limiting their leading scorer but allowing our perimeter D to focus more on the shooters without having to sag to the middle. It's time for Woody to step up as a senior with the things he can bring the team.

I'm not sure anyone is clear what a foul is or isn't...it will certainly be interesting to see how fouls are called come B1G time...once again it seems the officiating early on is trying emphasize limited contact which doesn't allow for much contact for interior defenders...ask Ahmad Wagner..fouling out in a blow out takes some help IMO.

My first impression is to push the pace, shoot more 3s, and take advantage of a deeper bench by aggressively pressing and trapping on defense. More fouls are being call with the rule changes - push the pace and get to the FT line. Iowa can go at least 9 deep (assuming Jok is OK), can Marquette?

Wouldn't bet the ranch on that.
Wow, you would want a B1G member to lose to a non-conference foe?
Yes, absolutely, I hate Wisconsin and Bo and hope they go 0-27. The worse they and Illinois do, the better off Iowa is. The Big is always going to be a great conference, its just the names of the teams at the top that change. I want Iowa on top. Live with it.

Woody is a brawler not a finesse player. When you get those skinny guys who don't really want to battle down low he picks up stupid fouls because he does not realize his own strength.

Tied 36-36 @ half. 12 turnovers for Marquette in the first half. Looks like they want to run. They said Marquette is a very young team.

Marquette is quite athletic, but is a bit wild.

We should be able to neutralize their size advantage they have over IUPUI.

Marquette seems dedicated to their 2-3 zone even though IUPUI is hitting from outside. But Marquette is giving up lots of O boards out of it.

Thanks for the reports Storm. Hmmmmmm...lot's of inexperience, sticking to a zone? Lot's of turnovers it sounds like as well.

I'm watching as well. Kind of interesting that WoJo recruits are playing a lot of zone. I realize they are young but just coming from his style of play seems a bit different.

Marquette 60 IUPUI 61 5 minutes to go ... loads of talent out there...if officials stick with the way they are calling games..this is going to be real interesting season..

Fisher & Ellenson...remind me a lot of White/Uthoff

These two have been quite down the stretch here.....IUPUI just tied it up with 35 seconds to play.

We can beat this team for sure if they play like tonight but it's BB.....never know what game is going to show up??

I suspect UM will have a season somewhat like Gesell's/Woody's freshmen year. Plenty of talent. Just going to take some lumps as they go.

Wow. Six four stars, a high five star, and a high three star and Marquette.........

Can't say what's going to happen down the road for Marquette but we can certainly beat this team on Thursday night. This gives Fran a chance to practice how to attack that UM zone because their man to man really sucked. and we match up a hell of a lot better than IUPUI. But it is BB so you never know how the ball is going to bounce or how teams will play?

I'd like to run up and down the floor and see if Ellenson and Fisher can stay up with a very fast pace. Fisher hardly came out of the game and IUPUI missed a TON of 3s tonight.

Looking forward to Thursday night.....
