Soldier Salute updates - Day 2

Really? He's a 5th year senior who has gone 8-3-3. Buchannan is a great wrestler but he's hardly a "Next topic" sort of guy. He got torn apart by Brooks at NCAAs. Hidlay, had they wrestled, would've done the same. He also lost to Sloan and Elam last year.
Also came in as favorite to take 197 and wrestling every bit of that. He looks like he needs some work with his gas tank but he wrestlers aggressive for an upper weight. Are you saying he has to beat or hang with Brooks to be considered elite?

I know it sounds crazy but.. why not have the two wrestle off for the 174 spot if Angelo goes 184 this year.. ?
I think that would be the case if he can consistently beat Nelson or Patrick, not take them down a few times in a 20 min go. Both are super tough on top, experienced, familiar with Gabe and strong as hell...it's hard to beat those guys.

So, he’s AA’d three times in three years of competition, placing 3rd the last two seasons he’s wrestled?

You're 100% assuming here. I could easily assume Gabe can beat PK... and equally assume the reasons Gabe is at 184 is bc 1. he can more easily make it and hang there strength wise than PK, 2. Nelson didn't want to go 184 and 3. Gabe is a team first guy who was willing to do whatever it took to get in the lineup.
Papa Arnold and others have alluded to multiple parts of this as accurate.
I'm a huge PK fan, have been since he was a high schooler. Great hawkeye and great fit for the program. But... he's 0/2 @ nationals and not proven he can beat the elite guys.
I like Gabe bc I believe he has that extra bit of special it will take to win titles eventually. His strength speed and explosiveness is on that top 1% level and those are the guys winning titles.
If your assumption is right then WHY isn't he competing with Patrick for the spot at 174 and Nelson going 184. You don't think the coach could tell his son, who screwed the team by gambling last season, that if he wants to wrestle this year then it will have to be at 184 so we don't stupidly burn a young kid's eligibility? I promised you, the athletes and the coaches KNOW who is the best at each weight, it's morans on here that invent alternative facts.

Herk can have his Kennedy in the line up this year again, but it’s Brands he has to beat out. Stop comparing him to Gabe, that will be for next year. Gabe still looked small compared to some of his opponents at the SS. Kennedy even said in his interview after SS, he is fighting for the spot against Nelson this year. Angelo will be redshirted. I would love to see him get Star and Plott just so he has a chance to see where he is against top experienced 184’s before next year. Gabe only lost 5-0 to plott last year, when he was wrestling as a 174. Plott was easily beating everyone besides keck last year. We have yet to see how Gabe handles the pressure of NCAA tournament, but Kennedy
I'm only DEFENDING him against GABE in response to posts or scenarios already mentioned. Regarding Nelson, the match up is a lot closer because of size and familiarity. Nelson can wrestle anyone close. It's the common opponents that will be the decider where bonus points can help and bad calls can lose a match. Patrick wins bigger and faster.

Buchannan is elite of the elite. If Hawks can snag a one year Buchannan type and the money is there for it, then great. Could even set up another great soldier salute final next year. As a fan, Im good either way.
Exactly, but look at Barr after a year and wait til you see Rademacher next year. Unless you want Cullan Schriever results and busted confidence, don't wrestle him prematurely. Riggins is ruined mentally, and so was Tsirtsis

I don't think the plan is or ever was for Angelo to burn his shirt this year. Someone had to man 184, it just so happens it's the guy I think is our best shot at a high finish at 174.
So ur saying Angelo is def going 184 this year and not using a RS??? So then it will be PK, Brands, and Arnold all wrestling off for 174 this year ?

Sounds like he’s saying Angelo will RS and feels Gabe is the best AA candidate at 74 but will wrestle 184

I have come to the conclusion that the best medicine for EVERYTHING that sickens me daily is coming here for the comedy, and to realize there are so many people that are worse off than I am mentally and many of them are right here, posting regularly. 😂

Everyone just take a deep breath and say “woo-sah” (bonus points or course for naming the movie reference).

I had a moment this weekend: I was sitting next to a parent of my son’s teammate during their child’s match. This individual was screaming their head off for their kid during his match. It was driving me crazy until I finally had to remind them: “um, your kid has no clue what you’re saying and can’t hear you”. It was SO funny to me, so many people around me swore I was lying and the kids hear everything their parents say during their match. Now, being a wrestler, I relayed to them a story where I had NO clue my mom and grandmother were at a tourney watching my finals match. Had NO clue where they were, or even heard them until SEEING them jump over the rope after the finals match (yes, I won) and literally tackle me while my hand was raised. (You have NO idea how awkward this was).

I wonder if the tables were turned. Seriously! I wonder if our kids were in the position to hear everything that adults were saying about them? Would they laugh as much as I did for hearing this parent and what was being yelled? I love reading people opinions on here. Mostly because it validates that they (opinions) ARE truly like a$$holes and everyone has one. Fortunately on this forum, we have an over-abundance of them with more than enough to share.

I swear, the other night, I fielded WAY too many calls and txts wanting to know what the hell just happened. Wanna know the one that meant the most to me out of them all? Another of my son’s teammate’s fathers who just wanted to know if my kid was ok. Made me remember that my kid was part of one HELLUVA program that really cares for their kids, and validated all of the more that my kid chose the right place.

This’ll probably be my last post until after NCAA’s. Mostly because I’ve tried many times following the instructions provided for posting pics, yet I’m just not smart enough to figure it out, and feel like a “lesser” member here. But I want to leave you all with something I used to hear an old preacher say every time he would come in town for revival. He would simply end every sermon with a call and chant that went like this: “if everyone here, was just like me, what kind of church would this church be”.

Now replace church with forum……… (could you imagine how boring this place would be with some of you people……).

Bad Boys is your bonus answer.

So he’s not going to Rutgers?

I agree with the everything but the Tsirtsis point. That sounds like an excuse to me. It appears to me that any loss could have potentially threw him over the edge.

Well said Coach. If this is indeed your last post till after NCAA’s, you will be missed. Best of luck and health to you and your family! Happy new year!!

I’m thinking something along those lines as well. My thoughts are that the three of them are really close. However, based on what I’m seeing so far this year - despite past NCAA performances - PK seems to be the guy at 74…so far…

I don't know how anyone can plan for next year or 4 years with so much movement with due to portal. wrestle the best guys this year.
You can still plan for what is best for their individual careers, since this is also an individual sport, unless you think forcing them to go when it’s not good for them will be the difference in winning a team title. Also, the fans , especially more casual ones and the media make bigger deal about having individual champions than team champions. Getting guys into the finals and winning those matches is going to attract more top recruits than winning a team championship on the backside in matches only hardcore fans may be watching. The last championship we won, we were still overshadowed by PSU because they had more finalists and champions. So when you have guys like Gabe and Angelo who have a good shot at the finals if you redshirt them, do you burn a year of their eligibility when you know at best they may be mid to low AA? I say maximize the years that they can realistically represent us in the finals.

Because if he would beat him then it would be Kennedy vs Arnold for 74 and Brands vs Ferrari for 184. All 4 can make 174 and all 4 can make 184. But if Arnold can beat Kennedy and Brands can beat Ferrari the line-up talk would be 174 Arnold, 184 Brands/Ferrari, where nobody would lose eligibility or care if Brands lost his final year. If Kennedy had only this year, you might see Arnold take the spot even if he was slightly behind but being that he has another year you can't make the slighter better guy sit for 2 years.
You’re making assumptions to fit your priors regarding PK. You may not be wrong, but you have no evidence that this is true.

Marinelli AAd 3 times and beat PK straight up for the spot. Also regarding one of your other posts, PK does not have 100% bonus this year.
He beat PK by a point when PK was a freshman. And, PK will likely be a 2x AA, and probably should have been a 3x if it weren't for that silly loss at NCAA's last year. That wasn't my point though. My point was that PK loss to Marinelli as a freshman by a point, so "potential" is nothing more than a "hope" for future success, not a guarantee.

And, it was already pointed out that PK didn't bonus Wask. But he did beat the snot out of him - 6-2 with a riding time point and only giving up 2 escapes.
