Soldier Salute updates - Day 2

I just don’t see the benefit in doing that. If he takes third and Arnold hypothetically would’ve taken 5th, you lose a year of eligibility for Angelo and risk alienating Arnold for like 3 team points. If we had a legitimate shot at the team title, the decision would tougher for sure.

It would be a close match so I'd go with Gabe this year and let 84 clear out.

In one ear, out the other! Everyone has an opinion on an anonymous board. Means nothing

-Ben is doing great. Glad to see him wrestling full time this year. Can't wait to see him in March!

I’m willing to place a small gentlemen’s bet - $ going to HWC - that Angelo goes this year representing the Hawks at NCAAs at 84. I think he’s got the goods to place at least 3rd and will want to give it a go.
I think he has the goods too. I'm not wagering on anything that stuff will do. Not anymore.

How can someone who gets beat out be “alienated”?

Love how we make such a big deal about a storied recruit not making the line-up. Penn State has this up and down their lineup and, for some reason, it’s not a big deal nor is it a failure on the coaches. It sucks but may the best man win!! Go Hawks!

It’s not a big deal there because they lose a guy or he rides the bench they’re still 40pts in first. Iowa needs to maximize all its guns. We have 4 possible AAs at 2 weights. They have likely 10 AAs in their starting lineup with half the Junior world team coming in next year.

I get that as well. I just don’t want to lose any opportunity to close the gap and I want whatever Angelo wants. If he wants to go that’s what I want to see. Just can’t guarantee anything beyond today in the world of NIL. And I think Gabe is much more lethal at 74, not that I know anything. :)

I’m good now…🤣 just talked to him. He even said he needs to work on finishing when people run. Felt good about getting riding time, something that he has been working on. I don’t mind fair criticism. It’s the other BS that shows a lack of knowledge and character 😡.
Lack of knowledge and character is a cesspool staple!

Good to win when you don't wrestle your best. The real meat of the schedule ramps up in Jan/Feb, those little things need to get ironed out, not just for Ben but for the entire team.

I believe he is trying for a Medical this year - either way, the point remains that Sinclair will likely be at 184 next year unless Elam gets huge this off season
That isn't how it works. If he has RS to use and he doesn't wrestle (development, break, illness or injury, it makes no difference) he uses his RS.
If he already used a RS and he suffers an unexpected season losing injury or illness he can petition for an extra year. Shane Van Ness is a recent and prime example. RS first year, 3rd place RSFresh year, injury last year while warming up for first dual and he petitioned NCAA for extra year due to loss of year because of unexpected catastrophic injury. It has already been granted.

Gabe 174/ Angelo 184 is something I’m on board with.

I guess I assumed he didn't have eligibility after this year so he would have to use a MR to get his final year. But, like I said, whether he uses a RS or MRS wasn't the important piece, just a technicality, the point I was making was that Sinclair will likely be at 84. And, by 84, I really mean 184 pounds.

I will keep beating my drum, Kennedy has another year next year and is the best 174 on the team. Iowa will have the exact same problem next year, Gabe should have wrestled last year and at least RS this year. Unless Kennedy doesn't use his extra year or someone gets hurt, Gabe might be in the same situation next year. But, if the real goal for Kennedy, Gabe and Ferrari is to win it all, then I can't see how upset they are with losing a year if you can't make the team. And, none of them will place top 4 at 184 this year in my opinion.

Edited: Just watched an interview with Kennedy and he basically said just this. It's not me versus Nelson, it's...am I doing what I need to do or have what it takes to win a National title.

the best solution is for one of them to amputate a leg and drop down to 141. Teemer made that sacrifice to go 125. Are they better than Teemer?

Could Gabe or Kennedy drop to 165 next year ?

If Gabe can make 174, why not go there now? I assumed he couldn’t beat Brands, that’s why he went 184. With Brands out, why not drop?

Probably for the same reason he doesn't go 165, 197, or HWT....because he can't beat the starter at this stage in his career. This is not a knock on Gabe, Iowa has great guys at 57, 65, 74, 84, 97, HWT. The COVID year really screwed Gabe.

Angelo is awesome!!!! No doubt in my mind he has 4 time champ potential as much as anyone has ever had.My opinion is to let that start next year. Wrestle Gabe and Kennedy at 84 and 74 and roll
With Gabe and Angelo next year. Kennedy is on a mission. Gabe is legit. We will be fine. Nelson thanks for all you’ve done for Iowa wrestling, but it’s time to move on to future endeavors. You had your chance. Go Hawks!!!

But this is the exact situation Iowa fans have been wanting for years....multiple AA threats at the same weight. The only thing that would make this better is if it were our problem at 125, or 141. If we had AA threats at those two weights NOBODY would be discussing this situation at all. Just like nobody is talking about Nagao, Facundo or Barraclaugh riding the bench at PSU. This is a sign that the staff is actually getting better at recruiting, we haven't had this problem in some time. And with NIL now in play, yes, we can lose Gabe (which would make me sick as a fan; understanding as a businessman) but if we pick up Figueroa, it's a net positive for the next two post seasons.

Is there any evidence to him being better than Arnold at 74?
