I've listened casually to Tool for awhile and like them quite a bit. However, it seems some percentage of their fanbase are pretty obsessed with Tool. What is the nuance I'm missing? I get they do cool math rock and stuff.

I think it just resonated that in an era with a ton of ‘superficial’ music, Tool had lyrics and music written on a deeper layer.

Also, they were never slaves to their label and pumping out yearly albums. So a bit of a scarcity effect going on.

I don’t think the Tool fans are any different than say deep Metallica fans for instance

They're like space music written for Charles Manson. With enormous drums and bass and buzzsaw guitar mixed in loosely yet on unusual tempo. Add to that the vocals of a sickly, burning warden, describing flaming fronts of fire in intimate detail and you arrive at Tool. My interpretation at least. They capture people. Or trap them.

Tool is pretty easy to explain: Opiate, Undertow and Aenima are perfection and then they went to shit and never came back.

Seen them in concert 3 times
When? I saw them twice. Once right before Undertow came out and then again right after it came out. They were my first concert. I wouldn't pay 20 bucks to see them now. Well maybe 20 but not much more.

I never minded tool until the local rock station played Pneuma constanly. That song is like 9 minutes long and really only needs to be like 3:30.

Now I don't listen to that station or Tool.

Late 90s once...early 2000s twice
