South Dakota - Roster

I'm 5'10 but if i played college ball I would have grown 2 more inches and been 6'0'which was my goal when I was younger!

This is a dangerous game for Iowa. It borders on being a lose-lose. If the Hawks win, and they should, it will be forgotten by Thursday and lost in the annuals by the weekend. But if they lose... holy hell !!!

Interesting that they have zero players from South Dakota on the squad.
Would you recruit that state or North Dakota for basketball Talent? I remember Alford getting a big guy from up there who was supposed to be so good at Iowa top 50 if I recall. Who didn't turn out to well, what was his name again? Like Reiner maybe?

Jared Reiner? I just remember people were saying at the time he might be the best prospect to ever come from that state he ended up just being ok. I can see good football talent but Basketball I just don't see it plus not a huge populated state, for North and South Dakota.

Iowa is a state that loves basketball that's why you see a lot of talent out of this state for how small populated it is I think.

In my opinion Reiner was a little better than "just ok". Led the B1G in rebounding one year. Wasn't a big scorer but remember he was a pretty reliable FT shooter. Was disappointed when he got turned down for a medical redshirt. If I recall correctly he had a stress fracture that he tried to play with before being shut down. Had he not tried to play through it for a few games he most likely would have been given the redshirt..........I believe he had a "cup of coffee" in the NBA. I don't consider any player that plays an NBA game "just ok". He was a pretty darn good player. I think people expected him to dominate as a freshmen. He improved every year and why I would have REALLY liked to see him get that extra hardship year

Reiner was a lot better than "just ok." If not for injuries in his last two years, he might have been all-B1G. I thought that there was a very good argument for giving him a medical red shirt year (by playing injured a few games, he played more than the allowed portion of the season, and he missed part of the prior season), but, as usual, the decision didn't go Iowa's way. It almost seemed like Settles playing so many years impacted future Iowa requests for medical red shirts. I read somewhere that Izzo had written a letter against giving Reiner a red shirt (maybe out of concern that Iowa could build some momentum under Alford, who did have a great second-year recruiting class). When he was healthy, Iowa was a much better team, and Iowa would have gotten off to a much better start under Alford.

Sioux Falls has an increasing population of Sudanese immigrants. Will they produce future high D1 recruits? I have no guess but jogging past a park on the north side of town the past couple summers and watching groups of 6ft2 to 6ft8 young Sudanese teenagers playing pick-up ball makes me believe that the local high school coaches probably know what's going on.

He was average IMO for a starting center at Iowa, I believe he had acouple ten day contracts in the NBA or played half a season.

He was athletic and not Woodbury skinny I just expected more from him but I do remember him improving his junior and senior year. If I recall right he was awful as a freshman, I just expected more from him given the hype as a almost 5 star center. He was really high 4 star.

Also had Alford as his coach who could recruit but not develop talent the highest recruit to be awful I've ever seen was Worley, he was 27th rated I believe by rivals or ESPN.

Fran probably would have made Jared better than Alford did, frans best at developing guys I've seen at Iowa. Only seen counting him 4 coaches, but still I feel the best at developing. Now Fran is starting to recruit well, it's exciting to see what he can do with guys who are already really talented coming in.

I'll stick with my he was better than "just okay". He made HUGE strides by his jr year. Lead Conf in rebounding over 50% from field 75% from line. Thought he was primed for a great senior year and was a bit disappointed in his play until I found out he was trying to play with a stress fracture. Nothing against Woodie but I thought Reiners was a MUCH better player.

Do you actually remember watching Reiner play? He might have been the best center in the B1G his last couple of seasons, but injuries took that away.

No North Dakota recruiting? No Les Jepsen!!!

I never said he was bad, but I can name quite a few other centers at Iowa I liked better some of you are way overreacting to a guy who averaged 5.7 points 4.7 rebs for a career. You guys are talking like he's Earl, he didn't quite live up to expectations like people thought, which was correct. Also said he was athletic a compliment. Sorry if he was your favorite Hawkeye of all time, atleast you guys are acting like he is. Way overreaction, wow!

Well let's be fair when the Hawks had Reggie Evans taking care of the paint there weren't many minutes his first 2 years. He was averaging 18 points per 40 min when he went down as a senior. He was FAR from skinny, the strength coach at the time always told me he had REALLY wide shoulders.

I never said he was skinny i said he wasn't Woodbury skinny when he came in earlier, but don't know why you quoted me if you were just throwing in he was far from skinny he was nicely sized and athletic coming in. With the hype I figured he would average 16 a game by his junior and senior year. He did improve a lot from his sophomore to junior year. I thought he was going to be a Alex Len type college player.

Evans wasn't hogging boards he was like Barkley wasn't tall but maybe the best rebounder in an Iowa uniform he knew where the ball was going to go right when the shot went off. It's rare to have a player that can see that he was like that in the NBA too. Barkley always said he knew right when it was shot if it was in or not and where it was going to rim off at, Evans was like that.

Also looking at anyone's per40 makes them look like a superstar.

I'll just leave it at this. I consider a healthy Reiner MUCH better than Woodie (and Woodie I consider better than "just okay")

If you remember Reiner his last couple of years, this is the correct assessment. He only played about 75% of his Junior year due to an injury, and then only played a few games his Senior year before he was injured. Reiner continued to play for several games injured (another really stupid decision by Alford and his staff), and that cost him from getting a medical red shirt. Reiner was not a flashy player, but he was a really good nuts and bolts center. Because of limited playing time for two years and injuries the next two, Reiner's statistics do not reflect how good he was when healthy.
