Kirk's Legacy

You shouldn’t call Tim Lester a fossil he isn’t that old come on now
I can't judge Lester (yet).
I get the drift he does want to modernize.
Just no way to judge his effectiveness until the Fossil In Chief (who is actually younger than me) has retired to the Old Coach Home.

KF has been great for the University of Iowa. Runs a clean program, guys graduate and he has been really good at developing players. He is a very conservative football game day coach who schedules very weakly and the offensive game passed him by several years ago, before the Brian fiasco. Glad he's been around but it's about time
I like Kirk as well, but, didn't he get suspended for the first game this past season?

Is there such a thing as a non-clean program at this point?

Kirk has figured out a strategy that allows UIowa to compete annually in football. That strategy dies nit feature explosive offensive football. It features solid fundamentals and solid defense and attention to field position. Not stuff that excites most butts in the stands but over time, this strategy dies win football games. Fans need to understand that coaches are hired and paid to WIN games. Kirk has been an unqualified success. Success is never been a guarantee any where, including UIowa.
Folks don’t appreciate the quality of Kirk’s work at UIowa. Detractors point to his Brian experiment and they have a legit point. But show me a coach or any person that does not have a flaw. To Kirk’s credit, he has seemingly “moved on” and now is addressing problems that face his teams today. True, he is getting older…. But to claim “ the game has passed him by” is a fool’s claim. Kirk’s game plan still wins football games.
Don't disagree that Kirk has a program that has a higher floor. The style he coaches with will not work in the new college football world. A lot of it is beyond his control and you are correct in that Iowa will struggle to produce the results of the last 20 years.

"Fans need to understand that coaches are hired and paid to WIN games."

Not sure this applies to Kirk at this point, he will be the coach regardless of how many games he wins. Several Iowa fans have determined that Kirk can coach as long as he wants.

The game is passing him by, maybe not on the field, but, the world getting to the field is passing him by.

Let me tell you about a story of a punter Ras..... a kid with wealthy kin that had no problem keepin the familiy fed. Then one day uncle money wrote a check and up *well sort of" from the foot came a wobbly kick. Graft that is. Iowa corn. The I O WAY.

KF fell on the sword for the WR/QB coaches error IMHO. KF is responsible for what goes on in the program but I don't think he actually did the deed.

TXC… how much more $$ are you donating ? Is it worth it to you to double up your gifts to UIowa?
This “portal” and paying players is not in the best interests of most P-5 for all teams. Honestly, it is not worth it to me. The “rules changed” in the procurement of players the last 3-4 years has dampened by interest in college football. It is now a game where the rich and wealthy will survive and those of ordinary means will struggle to be moderately successful.
I think it's been this way for a long time. That's why I have half-jokingly said before that I liked it the old-fashioned way better, where wealthy alums, from wealthy schools, paid for players "under the table". Back in the old days that transaction was being handled by those who had the means and the desire to create a slush fund for players. Now that it's out in the open, even the average Joe fan is getting hit up to contribute, and many do. But it's no surprise that the same schools are still getting the bulk of the best players, as they still have the money and the desire. They're just pissed with these new rules (or lack thereof) as it's costing them way more than it did before. Let them "cheat", I say, it would cost the rest of us a lot less, and the results are not that much different than before. But that ship has sailed. Think how much better we all would have been if the NCAA had just paid Ed O'Bannon off in a confidential settlement.

I was not advocating support for the SWARM; simply acknowledging the changing landscape. It is not worth arguing about, because it is not going anywhere. However, NIL does have influence in this current CFB environment.

And since you are so interested in the personal financial dealings of others: yes, I WAS a SWARM donor. I have withheld future donations and re-directed them elsewhere.

With that, and the other reasons discussed, I feel it’s important to have a more realistic view of the contemporary state of the program, and realistic goals and expectations over time.

To each their own.

There are so many rules and non-rules now, I think some perpetrators honestly are unaware of violations, while others know well they did.

You can't judge Lester at all. You can offer an opinion about him as an internet poster, but judging him is on the administration.
