Southern Scuffle

We (meaning myself and any combination of my mom, my 3 kids, and/or some friends) went every year from about '82 through the '90s, and most of the 2000s. A little less regular after 2010, but did do 2 or 3 in the Sears Centre/whateverit'scallednow. We sat all over the place from Row 2 reserved to GA seats. We sat next to wrestler's families from many schools, we sat Next to Leroy Smith one here and had a great time talking trash back and forth, Stephen Neal sat in front of us and blocked our view one session. We had a lot of great times and made a lot of friends (from all over the country). We also nearly got into a couple fights along the way.
It's a shame that tourney slid downhill when teams started pulling out, and it's a shame what NW did to it a few years ago.
We ate a lot of different places, mainly in Skokie, but our favorite was probably Gigio's in downtown Evanston. A little hole-in-the-wall Italian place with greasy NY-style pizza.
I miss going there (downtown, the suburbs not so much) but will never go back as long as the SS keeps going.
Lots of fun memories though.
Gigios was our spot also! Had several very fun filled, memorable evenings there…

Did you ever eat at “mustards last stand” right there outside the arena? Little hole in the wall place but was always busy.
Went all the time, I lived by Wrigley but always went to midlands. I was talking to a buddy how sad it is that it’s not really much. I miss it. SS was a good time, gotta keep pushing to get it better

Nothing but good memories of the Midlands, everybody had a great time. As an University of Iowa student I traveled to Evanston every year for Midlands, and have continued that tradition for many years. Recall when John Fisher (Michigan) defeated Tommy Brands, and Brands then proceeded to destroyed the locker room.
Even got some laughs out of that loud guy (lawyer) from Rutgers (?). Could hear him yelling throughout the arena.

I went to one midlands (2018). I saw the following happen

1. Lee lost to Rivera 7-3 in the finals
2. Aaron Brooks lost to Ryan Christensen during his grey shirt season
3. Warner got teched by Sloan in the quarters, and then lost to Rocco Caywood in the consi semis
4. Cass got majored by Heino and then pinned by Stencel in under a minute on the backside
5. Stoll got into a scuffle with Andrew Gunning’s dad after he told Stoll that he wishes Turk would have hit his head instead of his leg.

It was an interesting time. Watching our defending champ lose, our heralded freshman have a rough tournament, and true freshman Cass get dominated left me questioning the state of the program. We turned around and had the best team in the country each of the next two seasons.

I believe you may be mistaking John Fischer with Alan Friedman. Not sure he ever wrestled Fischer.

Fischer did beat Barry Davis, Barry’s senior year.

Brands only lost twice at Midlands, one in the finals to Jim Martin by a point and then his senior year riding a 60+ match win streak he lost by pinfall to Fried.

Fischer lost to Troy Steiner in the finals at 142.

Hmmm, conflicts with my memory. Fisher's University of Michigan biography indicates he did defeat Brands. However, this was long ago and far away. Memory fades, I will yield to your very credible telling of the facts. History will show that I am "seldom correct, but never in doubt".

Edit: I did review Midlands brackets from 1987 thru 1991, and your accounting of the facts is correct. I do not see that Brands and Fisher ever wrestled at the Midlands tournament. Impeccable history.

Likely Maryland’s Robin Ficker.

Bingo! Looking back it appears houmous. However in the day it was a real source of irritation, more just an annoyance. On occasion frustated fans would summon the maitre d' and attempt to have him removed. He is a lawyer!
He was kicked out of Washington Bullets game for sever heckling. He is from Maryland and would come to the PSU matches and do his one man chants really loud. It was funny at first then the folks around him started to get annoyed.
