Speaker Johnson orders US Capitol flags raised to full height for Donald Trump’s inauguration

I don't have a problem with it for just one day, the day a new president takes office. I don't think Jimmy Carter would have an issue either. Yes, I would say the same thing if it was Kamala taking office.

Why? Why is it a thing? Why can’t Trump show some decency and grace? It is a historical precedent that flags fly at half staff for 30 days. Just because it’s Trump?

I wonder if he realizes how many kudos he would get if he would have just come out and said, “I’m fine with the flags being lowered for President Carter. We honor ex presidents in this country try and we need to honor a good man who served his country to the best of his ability”. It doesn’t diminish him or his presidency in any way.

Instead he has to be a whiny bitch who makes everything about himself.

You're looking at it as only Trump. I'm looking at it as a presidential change. Like I said, I would say the same if Kamala won. We have to have country pride during a presidential exchange to celebrate the democracy of free elections. One day from morning a former president isn't going to hurt anyone.

Yep.
I could write that part of his speech in 5 minutes and he’d be able to spin the flag thing into something super positive for him.

But he’s a dumb, uninspired person who lies about crowd sizes and the size of his dick. So I guess we’re expecting too much.

Except it is only Trump. It’s Trump whining about something that doesn’t impact him in the slightest. He isn’t diminished because of the way the flags fly on the day he takes the oath.

We fly the flags to honor presidents who pass. The flags aren’t flying to honor the president being inaugurated.

He is a narcissist. I don't have a problem either way. I just don't understand why it's such a big deal.?

What a POS. Desecrating President Carter's sendoff. Carter was what we should all hope for as a president and a human being. A far cry for the despicable POS being inaugurated next week:

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday ordered that flags at the U.S. Capitol be raised to their full height on Inauguration Day, pausing a 30-day flag-lowering order following the death of former President Jimmy Carter.

The Republican leader’s decision means that President-elect Donald Trump will not take the oath of office for his second term under a half-staff flag, a prospect that he had previously complained about.

It mirrors actions taken in recent days by some Republican governors who have announced that flags in their states would be raised on Inauguration Day to mark Trump’s second term.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey and Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee did so on Tuesday, noting in social media posts that U.S. flags across their states would be relowered on Jan. 21 in honor of Carter. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a similar notice on Monday.

The 30-day flag-lowering period, set into motion with President Joe Biden’s order, affects flags at federal government buildings and their grounds, as well as at U.S. embassies and other facilities abroad, including military installations and vessels. It runs through Jan. 28, which encompasses Trump’s inauguration and first week in office. In line with Biden’s order, governors throughout the country issued their own orders to govern flags in their respective states.

The incoming president has expressed consternation that flags would still be lowered when he takes the oath, and it’s possible that he could order the overall reversal of Biden’s decision once he’s installed as president on Jan. 20.

“Democrats are all ‘giddy’” about the notion that flags will be lowered on Inauguration Day, Trump wrote Jan. 3 on social media.

“Nobody wants to see this,” Trump wrote. He added that “no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Trump has already taken action over the flags that he can control: at his home in Florida. In the days following Carter’s burial, a large U.S. flag at Trump’s private Mar-a-Lago club was observed flying at its full height, despite an order from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis that mirrors Biden’s.

As of Tuesday, DeSantis had not made alterations to the flag order in his own state.

The U.S. flag code lays out parameters for lowering the U.S. flag to half-staff, including a 30-day period for current or former presidents to cover flags at federal government buildings and their grounds, as well as at U.S. embassies and other facilities abroad, including military installations and vessels.

Ok. Now I get the other thread.

I gotta say, I’m neither in love with nor revolted by this. If it makes one feel better, consider it to be full mast for mlk day.

You think Speaker Johnson would do something like this just for MLK Day?
Of course not (though I would not oppose exception days for other nation civic holidays as a general principle). If he had brain one, he would have though…

But as I said, if it makes you feel better…

FYI - Carter is dead and already in the ground. Time to move on.

For the life of me I can't understand why Rs wanted Trump. Everyday for the next four years will be like this. Trump throwing tantrums. Rs caving. And then a mad scramble to explain why what Trump did was ok.

But trump isn't throwing a tantrum. You are. You clowns have multiple threads wailing about flags. It's pathetic but par for the course.

Hell yeah!
