Wildlife officials are trying to save a young whale stranded in a tidal pond

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WFSB/Gray News) - Wildlife officials said they may be out of options in their efforts to save a whale in southern Rhode Island.

The stranded whale, in a shallow tidal pond in South Kingston, was spotted Thursday morning and appears to be about 30 feet long, WCVB reported.

Rhode Island officials said the whale doesn’t appear to have any injuries.

A rescue team from Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut traveled there to help.

The team said it believes the animal to be a juvenile fin whale.

They were hoping the tide would help get the whale back out to sea; however, they said the animal was in poor condition.

Officials said that if the whale wasn’t able to get free by Friday morning, they may have to euthanize it.
