Spencer Lee article

Its a slow time of year for sure when a thread like this gets so much silly attention. People are people and there will always be annoying personalities in any fan base. There is not different DNA in people from one fanbaze vs the other. With Iowa and Penn St in wrestling the heat gets turned up a little because of expectations are so high. Penn st fans are certainly going to be annoyed when their top high school wrestler leaves their home state while they their home university sits at the top of college wrestling no different than Iowa would be. Its common psychology really! As far as these boards go we fight amongst eachother as much as we do with other fanbases!

You grew up in PA where that is expected, we get that. I watched a team that had won 6 straight state championships lose this year in the finals, I don't think I heard a boo. So maybe Iowa is a different world. Know which one I prefer.

I'll never forget AGON 2015 when all those mean Pennsylvania fans booed the accomplished Pennsylvania high school wrestler Freddy Stroker. So much better to live in holier than thou Iowa!

I believe I see far more differences in Freddy and Spencer than I see similarities. I did miss the 'Let's Go Hawks' comments directed at Freddie's family but they could have happened.

Freddie was not an iconic Iowa high school wrestler, plus he went out of his way to pimp the Hawkeyes as he exited the state. A better comparison would be David Kjeldgaard a modest well behaved superstar Iowa high school wrestler that announced he was going to Oklahoma and was thereafter treated with much respect. In fact, as I recall there was almost uniform sadness about his knee injury and his failure to reach his potential.

The the treatment of Spencer was disgraceful - period.

So what I get from your post is that because Spencer is iconic - as was Chance in PA and others like Kolat - they should elicit different crowd reactions than what I see as a common occurrence in wrestling in many states?

Booing the mat voraciously in a big match when stalling is occurring - common.
HS kids crowing after a big wrestler goes down in a big match - not that I witnessed this as I posted above, but common.

BTW, most all PA people will look at Spencer's career and say it was a shame he could not finish as an undefeated, 4x state champ, of which there are very few in PA history. He deserves to be there and probably would have except for an injury - which also happens fairly often in wrestling. In retrospect they will say that. In the moment of a historic upset occurring, crowd reaction will be different.

Well put. Can we all agree that the treatment to Spencer was disgraceful regardless of which fan base did it? If Iowa fans did it I would say it was disgraceful too.

We can but the f** patrol seems to want to minimize it and say 'but it happened in Iowa' as well

Sort of a change of pace with the discussion...what are the thoughts of Spencer Lee red shirting next year to heal?

100% chance he shirts. He A: already said he was going to shirt prior to the injury and B: now has a significant injury to heal from. He is not going to see varsity mat time next year.

I'm looking forward to seeing him wrestle. I worried that Nick Suriano would never get a National Championship with Spencer Lee coming in next year....maybe he has a chance next year before Lee shows up on the scene.

I look at them two has having many great battles...will be epic.

If NATO is back at 25 next year I would give him the title.

i don't think suriano is the least bit scared of spencer,if he is i have miss judged him. now who will come out on top, that's part of why we all love this stuff, may the best man win.

Am I correct in that they have only wrestled twice? I know they wrestled in '12 and '13 and each won one. I couldn't find any others but may have missed them...

Yes, although they may have wrestled as kids down at Wildwood or something IDK although I tend to doubt it as it would have been a buzz even back when they were young they were that well known. Super 32 finals are the only two occasions that they have met to my knowledge.

It seems like somehow I'm on the PS site? How can I jump back to the Hawkeye Report as I really could care less about all the garbage talk from dickman69 and his friends.
