He should be good for a medical redshirt right?
I’ve been brushing up on medical redshirt technicalities a lot lately myself…

According to the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance, Scott Young, “the NCAA has two requirements for a medical redshirt; the injury must have occurred in the first half of the season, and the athlete must have competed in less than 30 percent of the season.”

Even in the year prior to Covid, that rule was not set in stone.

He also has a regular redshirt available too, he should be covered either way if this terrible news is true.

Thanks.

Actually it is. The NCAA is very specific with the rules on this. Compete in less than 1/3 of the schedule. Cannot have competed in the championship segment which for wrestling I believe is Jan 1.

His freshman year redshirt. He never used it. Came out of it after midlands. He still has it I think.
He won three championships in (one in covid free year), and lost Covid year like all others, then burned his redshirt this year at Journeyman Collegiate Duals.

Logan Stieber wrestled more matches than Spencer and then used his redshirt his true freshman year. If Spencer wants to come back another year he will be able to. Either an injury one or maybe even just using his regular one.

i would think he can get a medical (if he wants it) provided the ncaa doesn't say the injury occurred last year. which 1) how can you really prove that and 2) ncaa has been all 'hands off' that type of stuff in recent years.

about a month ago i posed the question 'what if spencer sits this year and goes next year'?

now it's really time to examine that.

my knee jerk reaction is that instead of an iowa lock this year and a psu lock next year, we'll have two legit team races.

Rumor came from themat.com right around the same time PSU lost to Arkansas and Gabe Arnold committed to Iowa. I’ll wait until I hear this from a reliable source.

Well, it is what it is. Had he gotten surgery right after NCAAs he'd probably have taken his redshirt this year anyway. He wanted to give it a shot. He'll take a medical redshirt instead, return strong next year. Bonus: we got to see him wrestle twice this year.

As Smalls noted, it puts the team race neck and neck. Let's see how Ayala does against Surtin and McKee. 3-6 potential points at NCAAs might make it worth pulling the shirt, no offense to Ybarra.

Did he suffer a setback by damaging something else, or was it just a realization that he needed to get surgery?

Hopefully. Iowa will be losing a lot of points at 133, 174 next year. I think PK steps right in and places reasonably high. I like Cullan but can he place 3rd like desanto did last year? Idk. Nelson looks like an AA at 174, but a finalist. Idk.

This also sucks for Drake. He now will likely miss a year unless they pull his shirt this year. I imagine the scuffle will determine that decision.

i think you have to pull him now so he can redshirt next year.

So since his injury happened last year does that mean he isn’t eligible?
