Spencer

this is probably what was right for him all along. with suriano and vito coming back, if we’re really being honest he was going to have a hard time winning this year. he’s a mortal man after all. 75% is probably not good enough to beat those guys.

Think he still wins, but the margin is small. He owes it to himself to wrestle at his absolute best

I would not have bet against him. Ultimately a healthy Spencer Lee is a gold medalist and a 4 timer. The kid deserves both of those honors. Hopefully this helps him get there easier.

i would think he can get a medical (if he wants it) provided the ncaa doesn't say the injury occurred last year. which 1) how can you really prove that and 2) ncaa has been all 'hands off' that type of stuff in recent years.

about a month ago i posed the question 'what if spencer sits this year and goes next year'?

now it's really time to examine that.

my knee jerk reaction is that instead of an iowa lock this year and a psu lock next year, we'll have two legit team races.

Hypothesis occurred before the start of the season. I honestly don't know why Iowa complicated things by burning Spencer's redshirt. It does cause me to wonder more about Kemerer's availability this year.

Hopefully. Iowa will be losing a lot of points at 133, 174 next year. I think PK steps right in and places reasonably high. I like Cullan but can he place 3rd like desanto did last year? Idk. Nelson looks like an AA at 174, but a finalist. Idk.

This also sucks for Drake. He now will likely miss a year unless they pull his shirt this year. I imagine the scuffle will determine that decision.
Maybe Drake goes 133

It’s comical that you, along with others I’m sure, will act like this was even 0.00001% part of the decision.

Sorry to hear this news. Wish him nothing but the best. Whether he ever wrestles another college match or not, he IS the best HAWK ever IMO..a joy to watch do his thing

Well, it is what it is. Had he gotten surgery right after NCAAs he'd probably have taken his redshirt this year anyway. He wanted to give it a shot. He'll take a medical redshirt instead, return strong next year. Bonus: we got to see him wrestle twice this year.

As Smalls noted, it puts the team race neck and neck. Let's see how Ayala does against Surtin and McKee. 3-6 potential points at NCAAs might make it worth pulling the shirt, no offense to Ybarra.
Correct, he was not going to be able to wrestle this year if he did the surgery right away. He wanted to be there for the team and tried to make it work but not meant to be. Should be a auto for a medical since he had not taken a regular RS yet. We are obviously out of the running in the team race this year but that life.

That creates a log jam at 41 and 49 then. If drake goes 33, I’d assume Cullan moves up. Does Wyatt also go up? What about Murin? Maybe they all go up. That’s a lot of movement and a lot of speculation at this point. It’s probably not worth thinking about it right now.

it’s comical that you’re so damn sensitive about college wrestling. nowhere did i say it was. doesn’t change the point he has a better chance to win when he’s healthy.

Sensitive?? Alrighty.

Iowa has too many question marks to be in the running for next year at this point, even with a healthy Spencer.

Plus Drake is not even a gigantic 125, I don't even think he beats Cullan at this point. The real shitter is ADS had a RS to use if he wanted.

remember rby has said he doesn’t plan on coming back next year.

25- Spencer
33-Cullan/Drake
41-cullan/Drake
49 Murin
57- ?
65 PK
74- Brands/Swaff
84 - AA
97 - Warner
Hwt - Cass

I do not think the injury has to have taken place in the current season based on the NCAA rules.

(a) The incapacitating injury or illness occurs in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition at any two-year or four year collegiate institutions or occurs after the first day of classes in the student-athlete's senior year in high school;
(b) The injury or illness occurs prior to the first competition of the second half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport (see Bylaw 12.8.4.2.4) and results in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season;

perhaps. i believe in PK, Drake/Cullen, Nelson. and let's not pretend like psu doesn't have questions at the moment. adding 25 from spencer and it's a thing (at this point in time)
Potential there but missing a lot of proof for the most part. PK about even with Bull, Cullan a slight drop from ADS but could gain by next year. Nelson a long ways behind finalist potential Kem. Giant hole at 157. I'm high on Wyatt but a good ways behind Eierman although 141 clears out next year. 184 needs to get in order as well.

Well shit! Too bad you weren’t one of the 6 or 7 most reputable knee surgeons in the country he consulted with!
My apologies. I didn't realize they recommended he doesn't get surgery right away and instead should wait 9 months to make a decision. That way if he does get surgery, he not only is guaranteed to miss the season but also misses the 2022 world team trials as well.

This situation will definitely be mimicked by other coaches on how to approach getting ACL surgery.

Man, this day got shitty in a big hurry if this is all true. The chance (and a good one too) that Spencer and Kem will not wrestle again as a Hawk in college is a real kick to the nuts. I'm no expert, but if Spencer fixes one ACL I would think you would do the other eventually as well. I have a terrible feeling Lee will not wrestle next year either and will heal up both ACLS for a run at 2024 Olympics. That is his goal all along. I feel like his time in folkstyle as a Hawkeye is done and that is a very sobering thought too me. ☹

<<This situation was so poorly managed it's incredible. Sorry, but unless he damaged something else then this should have been evident months ago that he needed it.>>

I love passionate hawk fans... But to say this was mismanaged without facts is a cheap shot to Tom/Terry and staff AND the Lee Family.

Do you really think they just decided this week it wasn't going to get better..let's go under the knife ?

Take a deep breath.. our staff and coaches are not perfect..but this wasn't mismanaged...it's unfortunate, unlucky the timing sucks.. but definitely not mismanaged.

Happy New Year!
