Sports Gambling Update

With the message of “stay ready” that they have been relaying to the guys impacted why didn’t those guys wrestle unattached at opens? If you are telling them to stay ready but then withholding them from competition something is amiss.

Tom said a long time ago the NCAA are on record saying this is a major problem across the country but basically Iowa and Iowa state are the sacrificial lambs. Why did no other schools in Iowa get investigated illegally I might add. So many questions that need answers. Problem is NCAA has made up their mind and I am pretty sure they will stick to it. I like Harbaugh as a coach and look what he has done and gotten away with. But that’s money thing because they won it all for the conference.

Tom and Kevin basically telling the media they are worthless sacks of crap and to do some actual investigative journalism and stop being lazy
Yea, but very immature and misdirected anger on their part. I assume most of the sports writers in that room are not "investigative journalists". They cover sporting events. They don't have assistants and a budget to go digging around back alleys for intel, and pretty sure they can't issue subpoenas. And if Tom thought digging up info was that important/easy, then maybe he (the athlete's well-paid uncle/coach) or Terry (well-paid father) should have hired investigators/lawyers and been out front with all the dirt they uncovered. Love me some TnT, but lazy/immature response from him.

Unlike most idiots in this country, I value highly the 4th Amendment and I'm retired law enforcement. Yes the athletes did wrong and have admitted it but that does not excuse the apparent violation of their Constitutional Rights. How many of you are comfortable with the justice system ignoring your God given rights just to snag a few people doing things they shouldn't be doing?

What I heard is they only targeted facilities with restricted access to athletes coaches etc. only. UNI apparently does not have any said facilities. The UNI dome is a public space. They must not have any athlete only dorms etc either? If true, why were they concerned with infringing the rights of non athletes? Obviously more fish in a barrel with athlete only facilities.

It seems that many have lost sight of the fact that if the athlete's hadn't broken the rules none of this conversation would be happening. Every single one of them knew they were breaking rules and didn't care for some odd reason.

Just curious, how would one know they are breaking the rules and yet care for some odd reason?

That and the things they were doing, at least for the Iowa wrestlers involved, were not against the law. The DCI may have an official duty (I don’t know) to report athletes to their respective schools that was one of the conditions of getting college gambling passed in the state of Iowa. If they didn’t, all they succeeded in doing was arresting a few underage athletes who look like they may now walk plus ruining the careers of the one’s of legal age. All because one agent got a wild hair up his ass and the people above him were too stupid to realize the hot, steaming pile of shit that they were shoveling. They sure do now because Operation “Pass the Buck” has commenced. Had this happened in SEC country, his supervisors would have taken him behind the shed and kicked the shit out of him for just thinking about it.

For the “rules are rules” hall monitor up above, we get it. Once the schools reported it, the die was cast as far as the NCAA was concerned. But the way this happened was dirty and nothing but targeting athletes. They didn’t care about underage gambling by regular students…just those who play sports. The hypocrisy is rich…as I am reading articles about this, I get all kinds of online betting ads...lol.

Sending a message to the media in a press conference is not misdirected.

Explains why most of the interesting stuff breaks on forums and social media these days.

I dated a reporter many years ago when in my early twenties. She had no budget...barely any pay...and she chased down crap like this because it was what a reporter did. It's not just writing about a game or press conference anyone can view on their own.

**** the Iowa media. They had no issue plastering the student athletes faces all over the place, making them look like criminals during this entire process

so they should have just ignored the story?

or do you think woodward and bernstein are covering wrestling in iowa?

I love Tom, and this whole thing was a massive miscarriage of justice, but chastising the media here is misguided and a little naive. Just my opinion.

a lot of people seem to think everyone who works in the media have the exact same skills, abilities, and knowledge

if you can attend a press conference to ask tom brands questions, why can't you also single-handedly expose the innerworkings of a state-run criminal investigation?

Who qualifies to sue and what are the damages? Even though how they attained the information so far seems to be rather nefarious, I am not sure a law suit does nearly the damage many on here are hoping for...

Everyone that broke/violated the law should be held accountable.

My sarcasm-meter is broken. Please explain.

You tell 'em tough guy.
You act like they committed some God-awful crime that deserves the death penalty or something.
Either you have never made a mistake in your life, or you got some harsh punishment for something and want everyone else to pay the price also??

Or I believe that gambling by athletes on college sports is prohibited by the law and can be a huge problem. Wise up.

You are fudging. It is NCAA law.t
NCAA in no way enforces the law. They enforce rules and regulations for participation in collegiate sports. So, we may be getting into semantic a bit, but it was perfectly LEGAL for those over the required age limit to place those wagers. However, it was against the NCAA rules to do so and they would then govern what, if any, punishments would be levied on their ability to continue to participate in said athletics...

2 different skill sets

to break a story liek this, a reporter needs to know a lot about how these investigations start and operate, who to talk to, and have people(sources) willing to talk to them or confirm other things they heard. a reporter can't just call iowa DCI and ask them for all the infomration on how the gambling investigation started

reporters who could theoretically break that story probably aren't the ones going to tom brands' weekly press conferences...different skills and knowledge

on the other hand, i doubt those investigative reporters could write a very good story on iowa wrestling
