Start calling stalling in the first period

Stalling is stalling in any of the three periods.

Iowa is as guilty as any other team.

What they really need to do is make a new rule:

If a referree decides to call a meaningless stall call with 10 seconds to go in a match, after allowing it to take place an entire match, someone gets to shove that whistle up his ass.

And then let someone kick them in the lower region. Gotta discourage these kinds of things.

Refs in sports today just have little to no fear of repercussion.

I like your idea here, but having said that, I still am very doubtful that the boring wrestling problem will ever be solved by the refs. I say...

If there is a scoreless 1st period...at a minimum, both wrestlers get a stalling warning. (Note - this assumes that it still takes a stalling warning to get to where points are awarded on subsequent calls.)

I like the idea of a push out rule in some form.

Make takedowns worth three points and if the top wrestler releases the bottom wrestler intentionally, and this could only happen on a stoppage, the wrestler being releases gets no points.

If football were this boring to watch, the people in charge would tape the hands and arm of the defenders to their sides to open up scoring. SOMETHING needs to happen to open up the action.

If that's how the matches are called then you have to adjust. It's no different than any other sport.

It's impressive that a conference tie causes as much consternation as it does. But, be that as it may, it does no good to complain about officiating when the iowa wrestlers could have done drying about the eventual outcome.

I think they should go to the freestyle and Greco rule. If you get pushed out of the ring then it's a point. Get pushed out twice and a stalling call will be put on.

I like your suggestions in bold. I would support any of these modifications: Get rid of riding time (or reduce it to :30 instead of 1:00), utilize a shot clock like they do in FS, 0 pts for intentional release at stoppage, and either award a push out point or award a point to the person who controls the inner circle of the mat if there is no score in a period wrestled on the feet.

However, the easiest fix for everyone is to enforce stalling upon lack of activity during the match by either wrestler.

Officials have become increasingly reluctant to call stalling - I assume out of a desire not to be the deciding factor - because match scoring is so low. I used to put onus on the wrestlers to make stalling so obvious that it must be called until this weekend. The light bulb for me was that I didn't see a single fleeing the mat call this weekend, and in several instances the fleeing wrestler was gripping the edge of the mat to pull himself out of bounds (and Iowa was guilty of this on at least one occasion). I don't know a more obvious example of fleeing than grabbing a stationary object out of bounds to pull yourself off the mat.

Emphasizing activity and penalizing inactivity will at the very least 1. promote more offense, which will lead to more offense & thus 2. Minimize the official's role in the outcome of the match.
