Starting Lineup; Hawkeye Hoops 2016-17

Anybody else wish that any combination of the groups above would be absolutely wicked with Dr. Tom's full-court press? All these long armed athletes for the point and 2 wings... get the other team to speed up and now it is a run-and-gun game with our gazelles, most of whom can either finish at the basket or pull up for the 3...

McC has the full package with good to great half-court offenses and great defenses, especially the 3-quarter court press. This group could really excel at that.

yeah, I think that 3/4 court press could be fun to watch. So much length and speed. Hopefully, they all "sell-out" on effort, knowing Fran will shuttle guys in and out a lot.

It will be important, IMHO, because we don't really have a defender that can "hold their ground" against another team's post. Not against a bona-fide post, anyway. Lots of teams do not have one, of course, but some of them do, so we will need the press and the zone to combat that.

Williams
Moss
Jok
Wagner
Cook

If Moss isn't ready to start.. then replace him with Baer or Jones and move Jok to the 2. If Uhl makes a huge leap in the off season I could see him starting but for now I'm leaving him off based on his underwhelming play last year.

I both loved and hated his press. It was great fun to watch when it was working and not so much fun to watch when giving up one on none dunks.

Well, I'm going to project it like this, at this early juncture:

1 - C Williams
2 - Pete Jok
3- Nick Baer
4 - Dom Uhl
5- Ahmad Wagner.

Probably a team where is really doesn't matter who starts.

Guard rotation will include: Isaiah Moss, Jordan Bohannon, B Ellingston, Dale Jones?

Front Court: Tyler Cook, Dale Jones, Cody Pemsl,

Thoughts ?? Go Hawks :D

Oh man I hope those are not the starters, if so this team is in trouble.

1. C Williams
2. Moss
3. Pete
4 Wagner
5. Cook

Maybe Dom slips into the starting rotation but only if he can play under more control and with some more confidence (he was a wreck the second half of the BIG season).

I remember an NCAA Tourney game in the 90's against Duke. Wow, it was like watching their dunk highlight video.

Would you like to Wager something on whether Dom Uhl is a starter, next year?

No as, like I said, he may take a step up and I hope he does bc he needs to for the team to have a chance at the NCAA but he played pretty poorly down the stretch.

I really hope Fran isn't in a position where NB is one of the starters. Nothing against Nicholas but I think he is best as a short minute energy boost guy who can lift the team off the bench.

Dom had a great first half then sort of hit the wall at some point in the B1G. Could have been the competition or could have been fatigue, IDK. Either way I expect him to pick up where he left off in the first half and have a good to great junior year. If he is not starting, that is fine, but he has the physical tools to be a special player. It is all above the shoulders at this point for him.

Short minute? I'll be surprised if Baer doesn't play somewhere between 18-22 minutes per game.

Sorry...short bursts of minutes during games and if he gets on one of those tears then ride him until he cools. At this point I think he is a 15 - 18 mpg guy for the most part.

I agree. Baer will get close to starter minutes, even if he isn't a starter. Next season starter minutes will be lower for all starters, other than Jok and maybe one or two others. We will be much more balanced, with minutes more evenly distributed.

A lot of people want Baer to come off the bench with that energy . But If he is deserving, I would like his energy from the opening tip.

That said, I think we will have multiple energy guys next year. One or more of these newbies will step up. And I'll wager on that one.

We'll see. I think the rotation will be deeper next year, because there won't be as much difference in the starting 5 and the next 5, but I think Baer also moves up in the rotation. Gone are 4 guys that averaged 25 or more minutes per game. Last year Baer averaged 14.5 minutes per game, so 15-18 minutes would be a small jump.

This. And we know Fran likes to give minutes to the players doing the best during the game. So starting has never been the ultimate goal...earning minutes during the game is.

This might sound a little negative, but one thing I watch for is how long guys stay in the game. Fran has a doghouse. He doesn't keep guys in it for games on in, but he will stuff a guy in it very quickly if he screws up something when he should have known better.

After games, (Uhl is a good one) I have fun checking the play by play and it reads like a book. Uhl hits three, or gets a rebound...plays five or six minutes. Uhl causes turnover, two minutes later back to the bench.

Then there are the tell tales from Fran. He used to do this to Gesell quite a bit, "Mike is having confidence issues." Yeah, but WHO'S confidence...I think maybe Fran's.

Then there is the, "Our backup guy was playing so well I felt we just had to leave him in there."

And finally, and my favorite, "You know, I meant to play him more but just forgot to put him in!"

Yup, Fran doesn't throw players under the bus, but if you pay close attention he quietly places them there when no one is looking. :)

I agree. I do think that Cook starts right away - I don't have a link, but I would bet playing time was part of Fran's recruiting pitch similar to Woodbury/Gesell.

While I find it unrealistic to leave Uhl on the bench, my personal favorite lineup is Williams, Jok, Jones, Cook, Wagner. This is a versatile lineup that features our three best rebounders overall, and (potentially: Williams) our two best rebounding guards. Scoring would be balanced with Williams (slasher), Jok/Jones (shooter), and Cook/Wagner (post scoring- and I'd expect to see Wagner begin to expand his range a bit).

Then, either Cook or Wagner slide over to the 5 spot, Uhl comes in to play 4 as the first man off the bench, Baer subs in at the three, and Moss, Bohannon, Ellingson fill the guard spots.
seems like Ellingson would have to make a quantum leap to see much playing time. He reminded me of a poor mans Jeff Skinner

No hold your ground post defender perhaps, but we have a 6'7" point guard that will make post entry passes a nightmare.

As our most experienced player (other than Jok) I would be pretty surprised if Uhl did not start. Unless he has regressed he should be playing starter's minutes.

Is he really 6'7? Roster lists him at 6'6 and his recruiting profile lists him at 6'5

People seem to have forgotten the interview coach Dillard did last summer about this time when he said that Williams is really 6'7" and Wagner is maybe 6'6".

Baer is getting some national recognition. Like Uhl last summer, he will travel to Italy with USA East Coast All-Stars in August.

I don't think it's national recognition, I think Iowa has a good relationship with USA East Coast basketball team and sends someone there every year. This is the same team McCabe played on. Either way it's a great experience and should help Baer in the long run. He's pretty good already, adding some weight and experience would be huge for him

I love our 3/4 press but the half court offense appears average at best. Very few adjustments made when our pg's weren't getting it done.

I hope Fran is more consistent with the dog house. JU and company would get yanked at times for a mistake while our pg's had a tremendously long leash. I am a Fran fan by the way but irritated with how few adjustments were made to help Ute and Jok.

Hmmm...so who should McC have put at the point if he did not like what Gesell or Clemmons were doing?

I disagree about the half-court offense.

I still believe Baer might be one of those players who is best suited to fill the role of being a spark off the bench. Put him in the starting line up, and it's a different mind set. I could easily be wrong but that's where I see Baer excelling the most

I think that the only certain starters are the back court of Williams and Jok. Dale Jones and Dom Uhl are still wild cards in my mind. And it's certainly possible that Wagner and Cook could both be in the starting line up manning the front court. Isaiah Moss will probably also factor in.

For fun, I will guess:

G-Williams
G-Jok
F-Uhl
F-Wagner
F-Cook

6th man: Baer/Jones/Moss

Shoot, I don't know. It's quite likely we will see tons of lineup changes throughout the season.

Pretty much anyone on the team in the final minute of the half and games. Maybe you enjoyed watching the same failed play unfold almost every single time. Starting two pg's who can't shoot free throws or score was a big mistake the last half of the season. I still like Fran and am normally a positive poster so don't get too defensive.

Not defensive at all. I just did not really see any alternatives nor were you proposing anything concrete. Sounds like the coach just had to go with his best hand.

Could be. I would have shaken things up when the funk extended for several weeks. We needed more offense to help Ju and Jok. Our end of half and end of games set plays were a disaster. I respect how loyal Fran is but that is 3 years in a row he has stuck with struggling seniors that never produced. I would have brought AC off the bench. I would have also given more minutes to Williams in preparation for this season. Especially with the play of the pg's the last half.

I think practice performance probably dictated what McC could do. I would not second guess him.

Good conversation guys. I'd just add that hindsight makes us look smart. This - " I would not second guess him". It's fun to talk about...but that's about it.

My hope is that the Baer cage will fill up on that delicious Italian Pasta and get some meat on those bones!

He is always in the right place at the right time. There will be some growing pains at the beginning of the year but this team could be quite solid by the end. Especially if Jones and Uhl make strong improvements.
