She has excellent hands, quick feet and rebounds well for only 6'2". Gotta hope she stays healthy. If Clark decides to stay another year and with Ava Heiden coming in Iowa could be even better next year.
Czinano was only an inch taller but Stuelke can certainly jump over an inch higher than her. I never got why people thought she would be such a downgrade at the 5.
But yeah, a lineup of Clark, Feuerbach, Affolter, Stuelke and Heiden with McCabe + Gyamfi off the bench sounds really, really tough.
I know we keep trying to come up with reasons why she should come back, but I just don't see it. All of her "gang" Monica, Gabby, Mckenna, and her bestie Kate will be gone. The whole Indiana thing and Cmac being there, and the biggest thing I think will be any things she adds to those records won't mean much to her. Stars like Luka came back because their pro future was murky at best. Clark will be ready to forge into a new frontier.....
FWIW Clark also has great chemistry with Kylie and Syd. According to their social media they tend to travel together, along with Jada too. She seems to have quite an affection for McCabe as a kind of little sister, tho I’m not sure if/how that translates to the court.
This may be a hot take but I have a feeling Clark feels like the load is a bit lighter (in some ways) with them on the court — or it’s at least getting that way.
In the group therapy video from early last season, she said “no one else showed up to actually play basketball” — while harsh, many fans felt that way too. A lot of that IMO stemmed from the lack of athleticism of last seasons’s other starting 4 not named Clark. Teams like NC state could just neutralize everyone else with speed, size and strength.
In contrast, the team is much more athletic this year and also deeper — rebounding, loose balls, etc go our way a lot more often. More players can take it to the hoop. Almost everyone can keep up with her in transition. And more players are fresh at the end of a game. It doesn’t feel like all hope is lost if one person isn’t hitting shots bc they actually go deeper than 6 players this year.
With Kate, Molly and Gabbie (our three least athletic rotation players) graduating, next year’s team has the potential to up the pace even further. I think that could offer something worth considering. The team dynamic / chemistry has changed but so has its look / upside.
A few of us on here always knew the potential of the post-Fab 5 era, thanks to the (higher) caliber of younger recruits, but we had to wait for the logjam of longtime starters to graduate first. Hopefully Clark’s interest might be piqued by it as well (and its potential is proven with a good tourney run this season).
