States ranked for BBQ

Dude, that article is 5 years old. The no. 4 restaurant has since closed. The owners moved to my town and opened a bbq restaurant, which has also closed.

I'll be there in about a month or so. I actually prefer Smitty's, but Black's is great too and I think their sides and desserts are better. Kreuz is a close 3rd, but you can't go wrong with any of these three places.

You ever make it out to Snow's in Lexington? It's not too shabby.

Have you guys been to Louie Mueller’s in Taylor, TX? Their meat platter looks like an awesome meal.
yes I actually used to go there in the early 90s when it was just a hole in the wall and it was great and then something happened I don't know if the old man died but I think the kids took it over probably about 10 years ago and Guy Fieri went there and it's kind of gone downhill since kind of lost some of its appeal

Smokey D’s in Des Moines is regularly named one of the best in America. Won named best BBQ in America by Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, Good Morning America, and the World BBQ Championships in Texas...

And yet I prefer Uncle Wendel's to Smokey D's. Jethro's sides are better as well.

There's a reason Iowa isn't big into BBQ restaurants. Yes, we have all the pigs here so you'd think we'd dominate BBQ like we do an Iowa Pork Chop or PTL sandwich. The reason is that BBQ restaurants are usually more expensive and Iowans are frugal and practical. Cheaper to get our feedbag on elsewhere.

Plus, like steaks, we can do better at home for cheaper since we have access to great cuts of meat.

I've heard of it, but haven't had the pleasure yet. It's close enough to Austin, I may venture out there too.
it is close, like about 90 miles north or less, maybe 50-70 miles, up past Taylor but I heard it is one of those places that opens at like 8 am on Saturday only but by like noon the food is gone.

I’m not getting up at the crack of dawn just to stand in line for hours so I can spend my hard earned money on some BBQ. There’s better options in Texas with much smaller waiting times.

It costs five dollars and fifteen cents ($5.15) for my favorite Western NC style chopped pork platter that includes plenty of bbq, red slaw, French fries and either a bun to make a sandwich or some hush puppies. Or you can get just a sandwich for $3.75.

There is so much wrong with this post.

First of all, BBQ started as poor People food and the best places are usually not fancy or expensive.

That food isn’t winning any awards for appearance or presentation. Barely looks edible from the photos.

that would mean Ottumwa should have the best BBQ on the planet. and I don't think it does. there used to be a guy there from Mississippi who worked at deere who had a smoker down on second street, but I dunno if he's still there. that was like 15 yrs ago

from living in NY where I had good pizza, and Ottumwa where I had good loose meat, and tx where I had good bbq= there is a reason for regionalism

Carolina pulled or chopped pork (whether Eastern NC vinegar only, Western NC vinegar and ketchup sauce or SC mustard style) isn’t about the looks it’s about the taste. I’d take a pulled/chopped pork sandwich from Alston Bridges, Red Bridges, Lexington, Skylight, Scott’s, and Sweatman’s over Memphis ribs or Texas beef any day.

Yep, it’s usually some of the cheapest meat dishes you’ll find. It’s only in Austin where the fanatics line up 4 AM for ridiculously overhyped and overcharges brisket where it’s not generally true. Well, that and if you count Santa Maria Tritip and “bbq” steaks as bbq as it’s over direct heat. That can get expensive if you go to famous places like Hitching Post 2 or the Far Western Tavern.
