We are flying into Vegas and driving from there and then spending Saturday and Sunday night before flying back. It's our first time there and want to stay on the strip but don't want to pay for the top end resorts. What are my fellow Hawks recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I've stayed at the Flamingo several times. Nice hotel and great location. Right across the street from the Bellagio.

You are staying Jan 2nd - 4th? How much do you want to spend per night?

Just after NYE is a reasonable time for Vegas hotels. I would book directly with the hotels website as they typically have some discounted offers going and you may be able to get a food and beverage credit too.

I am very partial towards the MGM properties as I think they are nicer than the Ceasars properties in Vegas.

My recommendations for not "top end" would be Monte Carlo, NYNY, or even MGM if they are within your budget. I would avoid Circus Circus, and Stratosphere. Also remember every single Vegas casino tacks on a "resort fee" in addition to the per night charge. Remember to bring a jacket/coat. You will need it in January in Las Vegas.

Stayed at the Monte Carlo in April. It's a solid choice if you're looking for a "budget" strip hotel

Agree with Monte Carlo. Have stayed there for reasonable rates a few times and great location. Not near as stuffy as most other places.

We always stay downtown at the Golden Nugget; quality hotel and usually a lot cheaper than on the Strip. Much easier to get around, food is cheaper downtown, lower stakes gaming and Fremont Street is pretty cool. Then if you want to tour specific places on the strip, just drive to any one of a number of free casino/hotel parking buildings and go from there. Use Parkopedia to find the parking building for Golden Nugget (I do self-parking; easier to come and go) and to find the free parking buildings on the Strip. Be sure and eat at Tony Roma's restaurant at the Fremont Casino (downtown). Really, really good and reasonably priced. Be sure and tour the Bellagio and in particular the seasonal garden; very impressive.

We went to Vegas at the end of October to marry the daughter off.Stayed at Circus Circus had all the amenities we needed.(chapel,food,gaming/with sports booking;).Was about $50 a night with resort fees included.GET the buss pass!!!Takes you everywhere you want to go.Went to Fremont St.last night there. As aforementioned it was a little cheaper and entertaining.Outside of Fremont tho I wouldn't venture to far.The strip is where it's at.

I've stayed in several on the strip (Paris, MGM Grand, Luxor), and here's my advice. There's a holiday inn express about a block off the strip, stay there. They have coffee in the room, the big guys don't. So when you wake up, and you just want a cup of coffee, you have to walk a long ways, probably through a casino, to a coffee shop with a line so you can pay $6 for a straight black coffee. From the Holiday Inn Express, you can walk nearly the same distance after having your coffee and breakfast, and be on the strip.

My last 3 trips I have stayed downtown will never go back to the strip.

Vdara is an AMAZING hotel if you don't want to gamble (plus it's completely Non-Smoking throughout the property).... Excalibur and New York New York have great beds and are right near the end of the strip... and Mandalay Bay is also a great choice. I'd avoid anything down by the Stratusphere (Circus Circus, etc).... and Freemont Street is only good if you don't plan on getting any sleep and dealing with MAJOR freaks... but that's just one persons opinion LOL

The week after New Years is CES which starts the 6th. The hotels start filling up a day or two before that. Hopefully, you get there before rates get too bad.

I second Vdara as awesome and just walk over to Cosmopolitan(which is great too!) to gamble, but that might fall into the definition high end.

Good luck

It depends on how much "atmosphere" you want. If you want a slightly quieter hotel and not a monster casino area, the Monte Carlo and Flamingo are great options. The Flamingo gets you more centrally located in the strip area, but walking in that city has become a lot harder over the years as they route you through hotels in many spots just to cross the streets.

If anyone has been to the Flamingo in the past few years they'd realize it's becoming a dump. The Monte Carlo just did a remodel in the last couple of years - that's the better option of the 2.

I live here in Vegas and work at MGM and can answer all your questions. I also have a travel website that can save you 10-30% on rooms in Vegas and 25 other cities. If you want to contact me email me ryan33@rocketmail.com I can help with what you need.

Paris. Reasonable rates, nice rooms, small casino with easy access to the strip as well as bing centrally located. The location may be the biggest thing, going north or south is a big deal and if your walking a very big deal.

I'll add a couple more things. If it is your first time in Vegas, I say stay on the strip. I've stayed downtown before and yes the drinks/gambling is cheaper but you see it all in a day/night. I've stayed at the Fremont and California. They were alright, but I will not stay downtown again.

We usually stay at Mandalay Bay, we've stayed at the Monte Carlo as well. I see some people have recommended Paris, and it is in a good location. However, I just feel that the MGM Properties (Luxor, Monte Carlo, NYNY, MGM, Mirage, Mandalay Bay, Bellagio) are far superior to the Caesars (Harrahs, Paris, Ballys, Linq, etc...) on the Vegas strip. Somebody mentioned the Venetian and that is a very nice resort, but probably more than you're looking to pay for. Hope this all helps.

I have stayed at the Rio, Gold Coast, Flamingo, Excalibur, Tropicana, Hooters, Golden Nugget and New York, New York. I have enjoyed them all for sure but have stayed at the Rio the last 4 or 5 times. If you like the pace, there is nothing like Vegas.

I just went there with the same goal in mind. My cousin (who goes all the time) recommend Harrah's. It's right in the middle of the strip, and has affordable rooms. You'll be right across from Caesar's there.

If you don't mind staying slightly off the strip - call the SLS and sign up for their players card. At the end of last year they were pretty much giving everyone who signed up 2 free nights if you called and asked for them. Had a conference there in November and went out a couple days early and they comped the 2 nights i was there. I don't really care for the location but there is a tram stop right there. I usually stay at the Aria or somewhere down there when i go but they are a bit more pricey. I have stayed at the Vdara and will second the rooms are great and it is quiet for the location but it is also a bit pricey. I am told the rooms in the old Imperial Palace have been updated. Can't recall what it is called now but back when it was the IP it was dirt cheap and the location is perfect.

Flamingo, Paris, planet Hollywood are all in middle and makes it easy to go north or south if you want to walk to any other spots. Puts you close bell ago for water show or Caesars which probably has best shopping area. Haven't staye downtown but did visit and not very impressed. Casinos are smaller too

I have stayed at the Mirage, Rio, MGM and the Golden Nugget. I enjoyed the Golden Nugget the most by far, but I enjoy Fremont Street much more than the strip. I like being able to leave a casino and be in another in a matter of seconds instead of a 20 minute hike. Everything is cheaper down there too including the food and gambling. My fiancée and I are actually thinking about going in February for a quick cheap trip and staying in the Golden Gate or 4 Queens. I liked the Mirage the 2nd most of those places. MGM was gigantic (too big) and Rio was about 3 blocks off the strip so it wasn't as convenient.

Fwiw

I have never left the nyny piano bar without strange.
Stay, sing, hook up.
Rest is history.
Bring bank and tip the piano duds when hookedup.

If I stay downtown, it's the Plaza.
If on the strip, it's Bally's
I have stayed at the 4 queens,Lady Luck(rip), Riviera(rip),Cailifornia,Luxor,NYNY,Mirage.
My last three times in Vegas, though,I have stayed at Bally's. I like the hotel, midstrip location, not to overly priced and still classy, and across the street is the Stage Door Casino/Bar. If you like grimy floors, cheap liquor and food, questionable personnel, and unsavory clientel, this is your place. I have to stop in everytime I'm in Vegas .

The Rio is 3 blocks off the strip? Me thinks those must be some awfully large blocks
