Steak n Shake closing 57 restaurants due to COVID

All Whataburger places aren't good. Pensacola has a few. Most are pretty good, but I won't eat at the one off Gregory St. near the bay bridge.

For some reason, a Whataburger doesn't seem to spike my blood glucose.
some of them here in tx are total garbage and this is home for them. I had one in Tyler, was awesome as heck. some in dallas are good. some here in Austin area are old and dirty.

I've always found Burger King to be quite strange. When they are cooking up their burgers on the flame-grill, there is no restaurant anywhere that smells as good. Smells better than the finest steakhouses, better than top level Italian joints, better than the top oceanside seafood restaurants.
Then you get a burger. And it's Burger King. And it is terrible.

There in one close to dt austin by terry blacks bbq that looked like a tornado of bums and dumpsters blew through the place. I had talked up whataburger to a coworker of mine and when we pulled up, I immedietely apologized.

Like Steak and Shake, or not, this is an example of jobs that aren't coming right back.

The extra unemployment money isn't going to last long enough to compensate for all the jobs that aren't coming back this year, or probably next year.
Or ever.

Jumping on an earlier post that said 70% of Americans think they will get their job back. There has been a lot of Monday morning QBing about how the government responded to the virus outbreak. If it turns out that only 30-50% of those jobs come back do you think people will look back on the shutdown differently, as something we did wrong? I do. I think there will be a lot of regret over shutting down after all the lost jobs, the depression, and the lost decade that we are about to endure.

S&S opened a place within walking distance. Built it from the ground up. They didn't last 6 months.

I'm afraid there's going to be a lot more of this after businesses reopen and then attempt to survive while operating at 50-80% of their previous normal capacities...

They were in bad shape before Covid19 hit, but this is a sign of things to come.

lately I noticed massive amounts of burger kings here are just closing shop. before the covid too. I dunno what is wrong with BK other than they are dirty and old stores in disrepair and their food kind of sucks.

Had one of the best burgers at a BK in Black river Falls just last week.
The one here in the town we summer in "not so much"
Depends on management!!!

What we are seeing right now w COVID is an increase in the speed of these types of businesses, who are on their last leg, folding. On the flip side we are seeing an increase in speed and strength of those companies who were on the cutting edge making strong plays into the market.

This is destructive creation at its finest and while there will be losers there are going to be a lot of winners and money to be made coming out of this.

ADAPT OR DIE

Outdoor dining is going to be big. Places can improve that experience via overhead heating and cooling and circulation for bug control.

safer or not it will make people feel safer.

many breweries already have outdoor seating, I think we will see more and more outdoor eating/dining/even shopping. One of these malls that are failing needs to rip the roof off and go way outside the box.

@oit -I moved to SA last summer... I don't each much FF but my kids do like Whataburger. One thing I can't figure out, what is with all the Bill Miller's everywhere and how are they considered BBQ? THey are building one in Boerne near me and I don't see the demand for these.

It’s good and they seem to charge enough to keep the McDonald’s Burger King crowd away.

it’s the Target of fast food.

Yep, it's my personal favorite fast food. Double cheeseburger, fries, and a diet dew. Haven't been there for months, used to go at least once a month.

Chikfila is in same category but I find their food overrated. I would prefer crispier chicken.

yeah that one is notorious for being horrible but Sandy's next door to it is pretty good. That Whataburger you are speaking of is near Barton Springs and Riverside or South First. You ought to try going in there at 2 a.m. after all the bars close..it is a zoo

and their home office is in San Antonio. Texans seem to like that kind of barbecue as there is more of it like Grady's. It's more like a fast food type of barbecue kind of like mass-produced. I used to do deliveries there to their home office that used to be downtown by St Mary's Street . it's probably still there. They are kind of a San Antonio institution but I agree it's not good down home cooking BBQ

Their technology has been excellent for curbside pickups. Almost too good. Order meal on favorites menu. Press thumb print for apple pay and tell them which parking spot I will be in.

I justhad a Culver's burger just now and it was subpar for some reason.. kind of dried out and cold in the cheese wasn't melted. That doesn't happen too often at Culver's

You guys have Freddy's out there? Only seen them out west, but very similar. The one I went to was like a slightly better, cleaner version of S&S.
IDK stopped at Freddys in Sedalia Mo. and you could skate up to the counter from the grease on the floor. But the one in Council Bluffs is fairly clean.

Did you take the burger on a scenic drive before eating it? They make them fresh right when you order them.

Whataburger is a whateverburger for me. Had it once, nothing special. No locations north of the Mason/Dixon line that I'm aware of.

Steak & Shake is good, I rather like their shoestring fries and always upsize them in my combo orders. I also like the fact you can get a single, double or triple steakburger for the same damn price. Hell yeah I want more meat!

Culver's is the king of fast food burger places, best quality, always clean stores. Fries are just OK. Best shakes around, but their menu prices reflect the higher quality.

McD's is terrible, I never go to Hardee's/Carl Jr's and Wendy's has run out of beef at some locations, which is just fine with me because I only order chicken or chili there, and their fries have always been terrible.

I do like BK's Whopper, it has some heft to it, it's always garnished with fresh tomatoes, pickles and onions and I like the mayo they put on it which none of the other burger places do that. Their fries are bad so i always get the onion rings which are passable if you use their zesty dipping sauce.

This is exactly why opening things up won't help as much as people trumpeting it think it will.

Out of all the bbq I've eaten in Austin, Bill Millers is by far the worst. Don't understand it either.

I know that's what was crazy about it. They're usually too darn hot I can't even eat them. I was in the Drive-Thru and they made me pull up while they cooked it made me wait. I'm guessing I got a burger that sat there for a while or was somebody else's that drove off from the drive-through earlier.

Hardee’s hot ham & cheese is dang good. Might be the best fast food sandwich out there.
we got a bunch of Carl's Junior around here about 10 or 15 years ago and they've all since closed. But I always figured they should have made them Hardee's

A lot of firms are gonna “trim the fat”.

We’re gonna be looking at high unemployment for a long time.

They cited a poll on NPR where over 70% of folks let go over this think they’re getting their jobs back when this is over. I’m thinking many will be sorely disappointed.

Probably one of the factors behind over 70% of folks supporting lockdown. It’s a “short term” thing and the economy will come roaring back.
Heard some pretty depressing estimates on that NPR show..a couple of the economists said they think it could take a decade to get back to where we were.
JFC, this. Noleclone acting like there is some kind of silver lining in all this. The economic impact from the shutdown will be infinitely worse for many more than covid could have ever effected.

Although I haven't had them for years and years, their biscuits and gravy are fantastic.
I have this friend that used to eat at Carl's junior almost every morning for breakfast. I think he mentioned the biscuits. they have to be similar if not the same as hardees. he was ticked when they closed

I think they are the same thing with different names.

this guy is really eccentric. he stays out of his own house all day, driving from restaurants to goodwills to sonic to the grocery store, where they have a sit down. I am guessing there were times when he was the only guy sitting there in carl's junior. ha ha but he loved carl's junior breakfast. I think he said he could eat a whole meal for like $3
