Steve Prohm?

going 0 for conference play is also pretty unusual. If you are a power conference coach and you don't win a single game in the league in a given year, you shouldn't really complain if you are fired. Will they fire him? I know there are reasons why they wouldn't.

"Pretty unsual..." Going winless in conference play has happened 13 times to a major conference team since 1985. 37 seasons, ~60 P6 teams over that time, that's 2,200 chances for it to happen. It's a historic failure that basically should never happen.

You are correct. Even Lick in his awfulness managed to win at least a few conference games every year.

His worst year, his last one, he managed 4 conference wins out of 18 games and lost an OT game to Michigan that could have been a fifth win. I think most of us were ready to burn everything down, at least the ones left that cared by that point.

The two things I give credit to Lick for is that he recruited Dev Marble when most fans thought he was a reach and he was a palate cleanser after Alford. We needed somebody that wasn't a public relations nightmare. Unfortunately he was a nightmare for on-court performance instead. Praise be that Barta pulled the trigger instead of waiting.

Rumor mill has it that Prom has spoken to certain people about the New Mexico opening. Maybe he is trying to get out of town before his head hits the chopper. And whoever spoke about the ISU weed culture is spot on. Just ask Royce White.

Hate to say it but it worked out well last time a coach left the state of Iowa for New Mexico. It's a really good mid major job with a strong fan base down there. The coach who just got fired, Paul Weir, was ironically a grad assistant under Alford. If Prohm is smart he would bolt as soon as the clock hits zero at the Big 12 conference tourney next week.

Most coaches are going to get a Covid bye.If you are an Athletic Director making firing & hiring decisions based upon the COVID year, you better be darn sure, because now you own it, not them.

If they keep Prom it is a clear sign to everyone who pays attention, that they do not care or are not committed to winning.

Yes Lick was headed for a zero-win season as the decent players still in the program were ready to bolt if he were retained. Seems as if Barta was ready to give him another year.

ISU had a "weed" culture before Prohm. He came in and apparently tried to clean it up but the players weren't on board. He lost the talent as they realized that the coach wasn't cool with smoking, and now he's left with the dregs. It's not going to get much if any better in Ames.
How do they get away with that when they are being tested?

So of those 13 teams, how many of those schools kept their coach after going winless? And what did they win last year in the league, 3 or 4? 4-32 over the last 2 years? Unless they decide they just can’t do it financially, you have to fire him. A 4 star recruit is not turning that program around. As others have said, they had a lottery pick in Halliburton and sucked last year, just not as much as this year.

So does Johnny Orr.

Very true. Well known story and I've heard from credible sources that Mike Gatens went to Barta and told him Matt would be leaving if Lick stayed. Was the final nail in the coffin for him. Unless you are pulling in a recruit hyped up like Zion or Lebron there is zero reason to keep a coach based on his incoming recruiting class. Because odds are the kid ISU has coming in is just as likely to transfer after one year as he would be to decommit depending on if and when Prohm is let go. If they do fire Prohm maybe still sticks with them if he likes the new coach like Dev Marble with Fran.

I don't think the buyout is a significant factor.

I don't think ticket sales is a significant factor. People might not go to the games next year, but they'll renew their tickets in order to keep their priority, assuming better days will be coming in future years. If you want to buy a ticket anywhere except the balcony now, you have to pledge $12,500 a year. Some $5,000 donors are still grandfathered.

I do think that covid will be a significant factor.

If I had to bet today, with no inside information, assuming the team doesn't win again....

Most likely: Prohm stays.
Second most likely: Prohm does a McDermott and goes to a lower-level job.
Least likely: Prohm is fired.

Someone the other day mentioned Prohm doing an Alford and leaving for New Mexico. Any talk in the clone circles about him leaving for a mid major job?

Yes. Of course, there also is talk in Clone circles about Prohm growing a horn in the middle of his forehead and coaching the Unicorns. It is, after all, the internet. ;);)

Not sure if they are full of crap but there are several posters on the ISU site who claim to have info that Fred is coming back to ISU.
You mean a guy like Twins who says he has a huge donor Iowa “source” so close to Iowa football that he gives a Clone troll all inside info on recruits, players and coaching?! Seriously? Do people not get it. No Iowa source will give info to a troll who has 80k negative posts on Iowa. JFC why Clones believe an anti Hawk would get inside info to post on a Clone website is so laughable. So now Clones have inside info on the Mayor?, while more believable still dumb.

CyTwins’ Iowa source is paying for a lounge membership. It is how obsessed with the Hawks the leader of the isu fan base really is.

Prohm now has as many 20 losses seasons at ISU as every other head coach combined.

They started putting bench players in with 10 minutes left in the game.

A student manager got in the game. Not joking.

The freshman have scored a total of 5 points in the last 3 games.

The next coach is taking over a program that's basically just given itself the death penalty.

Anon - who is on your list of coaches for ISU? And I should add “realistic” list but you are smart so figured you wouldn’t start throwing out Coach Cal or Coach K type of responses. I am just curious.

They won't fire him unless he doesn't make the post season next year. Same with Hoiberg

Hoiberg's got that once-in-a-lifetime 5 star coming in so his leash might be a little longer.

Prohm bolting would be a win-win. Going to UNM would basically be a "fail up" for him, and ISU doesn't have to worry about a buyout. However, the next coach would have a completely empty cupboard to work with.

I'm sure someone can find an example but I'm struggling to think of a power 5 coach who left then came back to the same school to recapture the same success in bball or football. Think be easier at a non power 5 football or mid major b-ball for the coach who took bigger job and flamed out to go back and recapture the magic. If and big if he went back to ISU think he would do well but not sure he could be as successful since so many schools use is grad and transfer model now.

Difference between Fred and Prohm is Hoiberg's transfers were head and shoulders better than Prohm's, minus Shayok, and his best recruits stayed 4 years (ex. Niang & Morris) and weren't leaving at such a high rate like Prohm's who transfer out or 3 guys who left early to go pro. Good example his soph. and junior class of 4 recruits each only 1 player is left from each and both are bench players. Be very interesting to see of the 5 freshman on this roster how many are still there this fall.

Craig Smith or DeVries. Just my opinion.
