Steven Holloway to Iowa

Guys like Turk and Holloway are good addition and I'm pleased to have them as Hawkeyes but putting them in the same breath with Kemerer as a "top tier" recruits misses the mark considerably.
I'll admit I haven't seen a lot of Holloway and my excitement for him is generated by other posters who know him, watch him and think highly of him. I have however watched a lot of Vincent Turk and have been extremely impressed. Kemmerer is obvious the top get in the class, but Kemmerer is a big 145lber and Turk is a 138 lber who bumped up to 145 to make his team better. He's still ranked right around 8th in the country up a weight. He looked very good at this years Walsh Iron Man Tourney finishing 3rd. His only loss was to Matt Kolodzik from Blair who's ranked #1. He also has a very accomplished freestyle/Greco Roman background. I think he's got a great shot at being a 4 year starter at Iowa and multiple time AA. I know Gross's future is in jeopardy but I think Turk has more upside and will beat out Gross and Logan Ryan

All well and good but Kemerer is a top 10 type while the other two are more like 100 types. Doesn't mean they won't excel but they don't have the accolades coming in.

Turk reached the state finals as a sophomore, and he claimed the title at 138 pounds as a junior as Montini captured its seventh straight team championship.

"He's a vicious son of a gun and he ain't scared to fight," said Montini coach Israel Martinez, who also trained NCAA champion Tony Ramos before he joined the Hawkeyes. "If you can fight, you can get through Iowa's practice room. Then once you get through Iowa's practice room, you're ready to win a national title."

We'll have to agree to disagree Spooner :p

We certainly both agree that we're excited to have both of these guys in the program. Nothing you posted changes the fact that on a national level they aren't considered top tier recruits. Here's to both of them thriving in the Iowa room.

If Gross does not make it back on the team and if Turk can beat Carlton in the room and does well wrestling unattached like at midlands will Tom start a true freshman?
My self I think it is time to do it if they are the best you have in the room Need every dam point you can get at nationals.

To my knowledge Brands and Co have not started a true freshman yet and I remember hearing an interview last season where he said that Sorensen was wrestling well enough his true freshman year to have given him a shot at starting, but obviously he still didn't give him the nod. Brands and Co. philosophy is pretty cemented in the fact that guys get better as true freshman putting in their time in the room, developing physically, wrestling unattached adjusting to the college lifestyle without the added pressure of being a starter right away. The true test to this theory or to their philosophy would be if we could land an out of this world recruit like a Spencer Lee or a Mark Hall and they were at a weight class that we needed, would they pull the shirt then?

So Cal - Tom stated he was ready to throw Sorensen into the mix but Sorensen didn't have the right level of confidence and essentially self-eliminated by not having a strong enough answer to the question.

Yes, Hall or Lee would start from day 1.

Hindsight being what it is, I think the right decision was made. We get 3 more years of Brandon Sorensen after a successful redshirt freshman campaign.

While I agree with you, what would the points have looked like if Sorensen would have gotten 4th during his true-freshman campaign? I don't have the numbers in front of me, but that's a pretty big boost in team points. (I don't remember how much we lost by that year...)

andegre,

Iowa took 4th finishing 18 pts behind OkState for 3rd, 25.5 behind Minnesota for 2nd and 31 points behind PSU for 1st.

Kindig scored 16 pts taking 2nd.
Dardanes scored 3 pts going 2-2/
English scored 6.5 taking 7th.

Sorenson scored 14.5 this past season taking 4th. Although a mathematical possibility it would be highly unlikely that Sorenson wrestling would have bumped them ahead of anybody.

hypothetically, if Sorenson beats any of them early on, they don't get all of those points and it's close for 3rd.

conversely, if Sorenson lost to anyone of them early, he may not have gotten 4th either.
