If you could choose between a sweet 16 appearance which results in a loss versus a first round loss but Luka and Joe W come back next year, which would you choose? I’d actually take getting both back and delay some gratification.

Given our athletics programs' history/luck.....the first part of option B is more likely to happen anyway.

That is my ultimate fear; we lose in the first round and then Luka and Joe both leave

Fortunately, they are not mutually exclusive propositions. I say get a Sweet Sixteen or better AND have Luka and Weiskamp come back next year. Right now, one NBA draft site has Luka projected as the #50 2nd round pick in the 2021 draft. Weiskamp isn't projected as a 1st or 2nd round pick this year or next year. I don't know why so many Hawk fans think Weiskamp will leave early to go pro this year. He's not even rated among the top 30 undrafted free agents (meaning he's not in the top 90 this year--no reason to go pro with projections like that). Garza looks like he'd be a second round pick at best right now. Why not put together two straight monster years while trying to climb the ladder?

K. Wesson stayed for his senior year and he's projected to go 2nd round just as he was last year if he had come out early. Stay, get the degree, and then do the workouts before the draft. Another offseason for Garza after losing the tumor could do wonders for his quickness and leaping ability--he's improved significantly in those aspects this year and I would think he'd improve even more after another year working out in Bosnia for the summer.

I don't think Luka or Weesy are going anywhere. I also don't think how we do in the dance will impact their decisions. Neither are likely to be first round picks, and they both seem to enjoy being in college from what little I know about them. If they both return, along with healthy JBo, Nunge, PMac, and some promising freshmen, they have to be excited about what the team could do next year. The Hawks should be one of the favorites in the B1G.

I just want to make a sweet 16 some day. I was like 8 during the last one so that doesn’t count.

If you held me at gunpoint and made me pick, I'd choose bring them both back. But, I'm also solidly in the camp that they are both coming back anyway. Joe W is NOT ready for pro ball. He got an evaluation last year, and maybe he will again, but they'll tell him to stay. By all accounts, including his Father's word, Garza will be back also. So....I'll take both. This team is gritty and they know how to win physical games. If they are full strength going into the tournament, anything short of the 2nd weekend will be a letdown for me. If Weezy and CJ are shooting 40%+ from 3, they can go a LONG ways.

I hope Wieskamp isn’t seriously thinking of leaving. I’m a big fan of his and had pretty high expectations for him this year (probably too high). Basically, I thought it would be switched between Garza and him as go-to guys. But Wieskamp has a lot to work on before he makes that jump ... and the good thing is I think he will and had the ability to make more jumps in his game. But he needs to work on his handle, mid-range game, and ability to work against physical, aggressive defenders.

Garza - I mean this has been talked about before but I don’t think his athleticism translates well to the NBA but it could be that he thinks he has maximized his ability to grow in college.

Regardless of the win/loss record, I want both of them to be Hawkeyes for as long as they have any eligibility remaining. They are outstanding representatives of their team, school and the state of Iowa .

DeCourcey has us as a 4 seed as of today. Playing Auburn as the 5 to get to the sweet 16. I’ll take it. And Weiskamp isn’t going anywhere.

Why live for what if, take the sweet 16 now!

In my opinion, both are back... no question. Joe isn't a first rounder yet so why would he leave? Luka will be a second rounder no matter what. I think Luka is an incredible post player but they just don't use his position that way in the NBA. Sweet 16 is likely but it's the tournament and we know what it is like to lose to NW St.

A trick question. I'll choose them coming back because a final four will be waiting next year. What's to wait for one more year?

sweet 16 as an end goal seems pretty meager. The great 87 team made Elite 8 and really should have been in Final 4.

I'll take the Sweet 16. First of all, a 1-and-done in the NCAA's this year might kill me, and having those two come back would be little consolation. Plus, although having both of them (and Bohannon and Nunge) back next year is exciting but doesn't guarantee anything. The team might get worse (we've all seen that kind of thing).

Yeah, I hope the $35k he's earning in the G-League this year was worth giving up his last season of college eligibility and the chance to play for a really great team.

He's not even getting 35k. He's been cut and resigned multiple times now so he's not receiving the regular pay checks that would add up to 35k.

Cook has earned over $100,000 this year. Not sure of the exact earnings, but he’s played in 11 NBA games this year, and may have been on the roster but did not appear in additional games. At the very least he’s earned ~$120,000 (i.e., $898,310 minimum salary x (11 games played / 82 game season)).

One could make a good argument that Cook should have stayed another year, but he has made decent money this year.

If Joe W thinks he has a chance right now playing in the NBA then I will declare for the NFL on the same day. I am 55 and still lay the wood.

Win now! Too many variables.

If Garza gets injured next season, very little chance to replicate this season.

The only reason either of them would leave is because they dislike college and want to make some money overseas.

I looked it up. He's gotten two 10-day contracts (A minimum-salary 10-day contract for a rookie this season is worth $46,080) so he has made much more than I thought. I don't think your calculations on the 11 games played is accurate because of this, though. He never signed a one-year contract so he didn't get paid the league minimum per game for annual contracts. Still, he's doing better than I thought he was. If he gets cut again and signs another 10-day contract he'll get another $46,080. There's no guarantee, though.

I had no idea he was struggling, but I don't really pay attention to the NBA and I certainly don't pay attention to who is occupying the last slot on a roster.

Honestly though, I thought he was on a team and had been for most of the year. I guess this only goes to show how difficult it is to stick around if you can even make it at all.

We're talking sweet 16, not a championship......

Why live for "top 16"?

Joe W. has a ways to go yet to play at that level. The key for Joe is to keep improving every year which he has so for.

Well, in fairness, he's like most of the players who are not on guaranteed NBA contracts. This was the same path Uthoff was on when he went pro. The money for a 10-day contract is nothing to sneeze at, but bouncing around from team to team or between G League and the NBA parent teams is pretty common for guys who are on the fringe of the league. The really disturbing thing is that I don't think they get guaranteed health insurance when their ten-day contracts expire and they become free agents again.

Guys like Cook are often resigned by some team's G League equivalent and, depending on injuries they might get called up. It looks like the most likely time for guys to get called up from G Leagues or signed to 10-day contracts is when a team is projected to play another NBA team or set of NBA teams that have similar players, similar body types or athleticism or game styles as the G League players like Cook or whoever. In other words, Cook becomes an asset as a practice player for, say, the Cleveland Cavaliers by playing the role of some player from Milwaukee, Miami, New Orleans, etc., in practices for the following two weeks of games. Once that stretch is over, a guy like Cook may get cut, but may also get picked up by some other team looking for his type of body or game for similar matchup reasons.

It's kind of screwed up, really, but that's the nature of the NBA.
