Tell me about Sioux City

Rip in peace

I honestly don’t ever recall that being there. Is the map just wrong?

The wings are great. Especially the honey mustard wings.
Idk man to me wings are just wings. I make some decent ones at home. I'm sure 95% of American restaurants just open a thawed Tyson bag of wings into a fryer. Next time I'm there I'll take your word and try the honey mustard though.

Sioux City born and raised checking in. Morningside 4 life.

Sioux City gets a lot of crap but it's just as nice, or nicer, than any other city in Iowa. I've been to Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Dubuque, Council Bluffs, the Quad Cities, Muscatine, etc. None of you should be talking.
You think Sioux City is as nice or nicer than the DSM metro?

Way nicer
I've lived in Bettendorf, Iowa City, and Ankeny, and I have spent a considerable amount of time in Sioux City and Cedar Rapids. Kidding aside, Sioux City is not a bad place but it does not come close to offering the same things as the DSM metro in terms of restaurants, cultural events, concerts/shows, farmer's markets, etc. I would say the same thing about the DSM metro compared to other places I lived like the Boston metro.

If you look past the drunk Natives it's just as nice

Only visited once, on our way home from the Loess Hills area, around 8 years ago. Stopped at the museum in town which was pretty nice. Ate at a restaurant downtown, not sure which one, wasn’t great, but not terrible either. The downtown area seemed pretty run down, at least where we were. I have no desire to ever visit again.

Cedar Falls, Iowa City and DSM are much nicer. As are lots of other places in Iowa.

We're about 45 minutes away and it's the big city in the area for us. SC has most of the big box stores and chain restaurants you'd expect. It serves it's purpose. Not nearly as dirty and smelly as it was 30-40 years ago.

It generally has cheap gas. I filled up Tuesday for $2.64 a gallon.

Yeah, not sure which direction you are from SC, but not a lot of options unless you are close to Sioux falls or Omaha.

Flight 232. If you haven’t seen this, it’s well worth your time. Fitch’s eloquence recalls the plight of that day stunningly.

I worked with a lady that survived that crash. Her best friend who was sitting next to her on the plane died. It was surreal when she came back to work with a bunch of bruises, cuts and arm in a cast. She wouldn’t talk about it, understandably.

The pilot in that documentary Denny Finch, should have received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

And my gosh, Errol Morris, just an artistic truth teller with his documentaries.

Got a little dusty in here by the end of that doc - it was outstanding. I’d never seen it before.

I'm glad the survivor told him (Finch) to let it go. Hearing him saying he would have gladly given his life for any of those perished......yeah....it got to me as well. Hero.

I grew up in Sioux City. Tastee’s and Charlie Boys are superior to Maid Rite’s by a country mile. The Mexican food is the best and most authentic you will find in Iowa (across the river in South Sioux City too).

Sioux City also has a couple of really good breweries with Marto and Jackson Street.

I grew up and spent most of my life in the CR/IC corridor but married a girl from the SC area and moved here a few years ago. I had only been to SC in the late 80s/early 90s before moving here so my perception of it moving here was definitely "Sewer City". Thank God it's changed. It's really not a bad place to live. There's less to do than CR/IC but it's pretty negligible. One thing I've definitely noticed is health care is spotty at best here. Don't get me wrong, there are good providers, it just seems hit and miss. Anything big and we get referred to Omaha or Sioux Falls.

Denny was a hero. He died of a brain tumor. The plane was supposed to crash land in cedar rapids due to the proximity of uihc and its trauma surgeons. Everyone was put on call and blood was ordered. They had also ordered 200+ body bags for a mass fatality event. My dad was involved in that preparation and it happened on my mom's birthday, July 19, 1989. Obviously, it didn't make it that far.

Everything is superior to Maid Rite by a country mile. It's why they're not around anymore.

A former classmate of mine founded Marto. Proud of them.

Gotta give them credit for having a little humor in that scary time also....

"Oh you want us to land in a specific runway?" -Cockpit

I was 5 and in the Siouxland territory, so it was all over the news stations.

I took my first flight within a year of that incident and remember being scared as hell to get on that plane, I asked the flight attendant if the plane is going to crash, because that’s all I knew about flying.

Agreed. The closest I have found to a Sioux City loose meat in the Cedar Rapids area is Barkers Ice Cream in Marion. I tried it once and thought it was pretty good.

That’s cool on Marto. I’ve been at beer shares with them. Were you classmates with Rod or Eric?

I didn't fly until after that either. I was scared. I'm never scared on an airplane anymore. I figure it will be a quick death if something goes wrong.

That sucks he died of a brain tumor. He was 46 at the time of crash. So I hope he got another 30 40 years

I’m learning that a lot of NW Iowa folks are about as delusional as Nebraska football fans. Something else in the water besides nitrates?

I’m sure it’s good, but my wife (who spent a few weeks in Toluca, Mexico and has worked as a translator for a wide variety of Mexican grocers and restaurant employees for 20 years) would disagree on the authenticity not being equaled.

Sioux City was probably the better place for it to crash. I understand the UIHC component, but things could have really bad if they tried to make there. Sioux City's airport was surrounded by farmland.

And Loosie’s is even better than that.

Of course I don’t believe it’s as authentic as Mexico. But Sioux City does have a higher concentrated population of Hispanics spanning many decades due to having two large packing plants. So I would say it’s as authentic as you’re going to get in Iowa and I got to grow up with it.

Oh, I’m not talking the authenticity compared to Mexico. I’m talking Cedar Rapids and Iowa City being their equal.

Ahh. Ok, gotcha. I’ve had Mexican in both CR and IC (I live in the area now). While they have gotten better over the past 5-10 years, SC is still unmatched.

Of course these are all opinions and I’m no expert. But I grew up eating menudo, pozole, lengua tacos and barbacoa in the 90’s. I would stop by the bakery after school on the way home and buy a bag of conchas to eat. So I know a little bit about the cuisine.

Back to Flight 232......it simply is amazing that one life was saved in that crash. The one in a billion chance for all the systems to fail added to the lives that survived.

I'm not a religious person. But that was a miracle.

It absolutely is. This is great read if you're interested in further details.

This is such a dumb argument. Geographical proximity to Mexico means little compared to whether the actual people making the food are real Mexicans/

There is just as good “authentic” Mexican in Davenport or Muscatine or West Liberty as there is in Sioux City, if the food is made by Mexicans with homemade recipes and good ingredients.. For that matter, there is likely jas good of Mexican food in Iowa as in Texas or California, just a hell of a lot less and more non-authentic places..

Who said anything about geographical proximity to Mexico? A poster was just saying that Sioux City has a rather large Hispanic population, resulting in some good authentic Mexican restaurants.

You never hear about that place in here. And it has one of the coolest sounding names. Also, one of the greatest beverages on earth is Sioux City Birch Beer.

So, is it as awesome a place I dream of it being? Saloon fights and striking it rich and fighting off injuns to save your best gal? I’m just sure it is!
I'm a native, but left in 1980. Both my wife(no pic!) and I still lots of family there and we visit frequently. I've lived all over and currently live in CR.

SC has improved itself pretty significantly in the last decade. I love hanging out on 4th St. The biggest difference between SC and CR is that the bigger population of CR/Marion allows for a bigger variety of amenities including local restaurants. There are a handful of Restaurants in SC that I really like, but there are dozens at home in CR. CR/Marion is more comparable to Sioux Falls. Same with QCs. Bigger population can support more things. CR SF and QC are just next level over SC. Des Moines is next level over them.

The newer areas of SC are really nice, but some of the areas that were sketchy when I was in High School have really deteriorated. The area north of downtown is kinda scary these days. Sioux City is also inundated with Husker fans, and that is a huge negative.

SCs location between Sioux Falls and Omaha really limit air service compared to Eastern Iowa Airport which serves both CR and IC metros. It is also kind of Iowa's forgotten City as most of the other major cities are much closer to each other. 2 hours gets me to every Iowa Metro except Sioux City. We are frequent fliers to IC Waterloo, Dubuque and Des Moines. We would never go to SC if no family was there.

I grew up near Sioux City. I played a lot of baseball in the Northeast Nebraska semi pro baseball league. Also I played a lot of fast pitch softball at Hubbard Park in the upper part of Sioux City. Hubbard Park was a neighborhood park and we would get big crowds. The Metro league was one of the toughest in the Midwest.
I was the 1978 batting champion for the Metro League. I hit an even .400 that year.
There were great players in that league.
Later two players played for the United States team that went to China and won the World Title. One pitcher and one catcher..
The pitcher was named the most valuable pitcher and the catcher was named the most valuable player.

I watched you play at Hubbard Park when I was 5 years old.

Continuing on the sports theme, little known fact (apparently by this thread) is the Chicago White Sox originated in Sioux City as the Cornhuskers.

Had the first electric elevated railroad in the world.

The Loess Hills are beautiful and unique in the world.

The Orpheum Theater is a gem.

South Dakota bordering it is tough since it has no income tax and has pulled population that way. But you can beautifully see it via the War Eagle monument.

As others have mentioned, the rehab of many old, legacy buildings is a real win for the future of the town.
