Tesla’s Optimus Robots Were Remotely Operated at Cybercab Event

It seems some people are still confused about how autonomous the Optimus bots were at the Tesla event. This clip is from another video Tesla released a while ago. It shows how the bots are controlled remotely using a haptic suit, kind of like puppets.

Also, during the event, the operators were speaking through a microphone. None of the bots were talking on their own. In short, all the hand movements and speaking were done remotely, but the walking was autonomous.

You'd need a ton of datapoints to get these robots to function as advertised so it's understandable. I was sent an internal Tesla memo and they've only got enough data to have one function performed completely autonomously. Amazingly, it was provided by an entity outside of Tesla. They said the USB drive came with a note signed "From all the times I hear your name E-boo. Love, phenomenally."

i saw a clip on youtube of a optimus conversing with a guy and was damn impressed. then i noticed a guy in the background who looked suspiciously like a lab nerd monitoring things and i made a joke that maybe the vid was staged. a bit disappointing to learn that was actually the case and that the gestures and conversation were fakes.

Looks like they need to keep those robots on a leash so they don’t try to kill us.
It's so they don't tip over and fall on someone.

When the robot is connected to a "remote puppeteer" and not actually moving based on its own gyros/sensors, that's what'll happen.

Yeah, I know what it’s really for. lol.
Do people introduce you as their ‘special friend’?

Can you imagine being duped by Elon (again)? It takes a special breed not to be super skeptical at the exhibition stunts.

On another note, was Jeff Bezos able rescind his orders?

“Very proud of and grateful for the team's hard work leading to our 10/10 event last week. So excited to give many people a live feel of our progress with Optimus and its expected future capabilities!

We had about 20 active bots at all times - walking through a packed crowd, dancing, taking selfies, or even pouring drinks and handing out snacks. While of course they were human assisted to some extent to help showcase our vision of an amazing future, they walked, balanced and danced on their own for ~4 hours straight, with only one single fall (someone's handbag caught a bot's hand).

We were also excited to show progress on our next-gen hand/forearm, which doubles the hand's degrees of freedom from 11 to 22, and considerably expands tactile sensing coverage.

Making nice demo videos is not easy, but ensuring a safe live operation of many humanoids for hours in a public outdoor environment imposed a much higher bar. Through this push, we made significant improvement across full-body controls & locomotion, hardware stability, and infrastructure.

Further progress towards bot autonomy has also been made in the background, which we'll share very soon.

We really had a blast!”

You missed the point, as always. GIF was showing failure, which was in response your GIF. The “not ready for prime time” window break is just the chef’s kiss. Hopefully your $40k version is on its way. Also, I’m old enough to remember the model S unveiling. Do you (maturity of that design then, pricing, etc)? Now do all the other promises made/missed. TIA.

BTW, this is simply commentary on “overselling” the current status of a product. There are receipts of this. It’s simply stating a fact. I’m skeptical of most “show and tell” events.

While I'm not surprised that the rumors the robots were remote operated ended up being true we are far closer to what they were pretending was reality than people realize. When Steve Jobs first introduced the iPhone none of the features for the phone actually worked. He had a separate phone to show off each App.

Tesla should have marketed it as "This is what we want to have in 5 years (minus the human operators in the background)" instead of "Wow, look what we have already!" They would have gotten the same positive press and not come off as shady and disingenuous.

“While we were busy making its walk more robust for 10/10, we’ve also been working on additional pieces of autonomy for Optimus!

The absence of (useful) GPS in most indoor environments makes visual navigation central for humanoids. Using its 2D cameras, Optimus can now navigate new places autonomously while avoiding obstacles, as it stores distinctive visual features in our cloud.

And it can do so while carrying significant payloads!

With this, Optimus can autonomously head to a charging station, dock itself (requires precise alignment) and charge as long as necessary.

Our work on Autopilot has greatly boosted these efforts; the same technology is used in both car & bot, barring some details and of course the dataset needed to train the bot’s AI.

Separately, we've also started tackling non-flat terrain and stairs.

Finally, Optimus started learning to interact with humans. We trained its neural net to hand over snacks & drinks upon gestures / voice requests.

All neural nets currently used by Optimus (manipulation tasks, visual obstacles detection, localization/navigation) run on its embedded computer directly, leveraging our AI accelerators.

Still a lot of work ahead, but exciting times!”

Elon is "inventing" things that have already been invented.

When it comes to announcing upcoming delivery dates, Tesla’s probably the shadiest and most disingenuous. They make a good vehicle but they seem to have no concept of time
