Because she got pregnant at 16 and was terrified of it happening again.

Editing to add more details. She got pregnant in 1963 at 16. She had to get married to a lazy, abusive, pos. She had to quit school because pregnant or married people weren’t allowed to go to school. She left my brother’s dad before he was born. At the ripe age of 17 she was basically spoiled goods. She met my dad at 18, married him at 19, had me at 21. Honestly I think there was a pregnancy scare that prompted their wedding but can’t prove it. The did stay married almost 40 years until he died. But she didn’t really have many options available to her. She didn’t want me or my cousins to have our lives limited that way.
