Mike was the best player on the court tonight and it wasn't close. As frustrating as he can be sometimes, he came up big tonight. Really hope that with the MSU monkey off their back the boys can go on a roll in conference play. We won by 13 and Uthoff only scored 10... Never would have guessed that. Go Hawks!
Great game for MG, hit those free throws in the end as well, to seal it. Glad for him and the other seniors to get that blown game syndrome out of the system a bit. Big win!
Gessell has gotten MUCH stronger, especially in the last year. Part of me still expects him to drive, then go flying out of bounds and have the ball stuffed right into his face. Credit Mike for putting in the time to get stronger where he can draw fouls, and even finish through contact sometimes.
Glad to see Mike play with confidence against MSU, which has probably been his toughest opponent over his four years. Maybe he will finally convince some of his detractors that Iowa is not weak at PG. I think he is our second best player overall.
Gesel wasn't the player anyone of us thought he might be out of high school. Kirk Heinrich he is not. He blew many a big moment in his first 3 offerings. However, this year he is clearly a different guy. He's confident, decisive, aggressive, and for a little guy finds creative ways to get to the basket and not get his shot blocked. Mike learned his lessons and im becoming a big fan.
I used to worry about his handles when he would get pressure bringing the ball up but not anymore. The guy is a baller.
