The Bull back in action

I hope this is freestyle so Lewis can’t play the edge and flee the mat like he did in folkstyle

Would have been nice to see him at WTT instead. HWC needs more participants
He was there...............coaching the hwc women's team. But yes, it was disappointing to see our low numbers. I believe isu and uni both had more men's club members competing than we did.

Yes. Lost to Mark Hall in the Junior 2017 finals best 2 of 3 and then lost to Mekhi Lewis in 2018. Both went on to win Junior Worlds. Also lost to Green in Coralville.
Prior to that as in Highschool he never did much freestyle.

I could see the Bull having a freestyle style like Gilman's and Ramos's: great positioning, lots of push-outs, good fundamental offense, stingy defense, but perhaps without the most dynamic par terre. That would be more than ok.

To hear him tell it, he’s not that excited about freestyle. It’s funny because the two guys we have on the roster whose style is made for freestyle (Desanto being the other) aren’t experienced or into it.

What has Lewis been doing? Haven’t seen that he’s wrestled lately. This could be a beating.

Then why is the freestyle club paying them?

Who’s “we”? Got a turd in your pocket?
Iowa fans. I asked a legitimate question about a freestyle club paying people who may never wrestle freestyle. Instead of giving an answer, you just say its bitching.

Thats wild to me because where I work, if people dont want to do what they are paid for they are let go and everyone seems to understand that.

Clearly, you're not very mature, so does anyone else have an answer?

Then you have no clue how the HWC works…. Just for fun, name any 2 guys you’d rather have getting paid than ADS and Alex by the HWC and I’ll explain to you why it’s a horrible idea.

BTW, we have no idea if or when they both will compete. It’s not like they’ve said they absolutely will not.

Someone who competes. Because right now if someone is watching the WTT they arent seeing HWC. They are seeing NLWC, Spartan RTC, Cliff Keen, Ohio RTC. If I wasnt a die hard Hawkeye fan, and I had a kid who had Olympic aspirations, HWC would be a harder sell because of that.

This has been a problem for awhile now, and this is just a continuation of that problem.

Again, who says they won’t?

Alex, ADS, Jaydin, Warner, Cass, Lee, Woods, Kennedy, Ayala, Assad, and others will be a real deep roster soon.

Not to mention we’re constantly bringing experienced, successful SR level FS guys in all the time to train with our guys. There’s a few in the room right now. They’re just not “full time” HWC guys.

They didnt at WTT. We are discussing how they dont like it and may never compete. Same thing, at my job we dont pay people for what they MIGHT do some day.

If we have a ton of guys competing next year, Ill come back and eat crow happily. But given the evidence this seems to be a long time trend.

Fair enough, but guys like Alex and ADS are invaluable to the the team. There’s no one on the outside that would come in and do what they will to help the program.

And I will applaud it and sing the praises if that happens but we just havent seen that for a real long time. Its only natural that patience will wear thin.

Id be more ok with keeping a couple guys like that IF we were seeing better numbers at high level events. Its just when we only have a couple, it starts to look like a trend.

I mean, if they arent going to compete you could combine those salaries and go after someone who could add to depth in coaching at 165-285.... there are big names to go after.

So you’re suggesting letting Alex and ADS walk for say a Dake/JB type?

Btw, I’m not at all against bringing in guys from outside the program, but they just have to be the right fit. TnT want guys who are willing to scrap, not guys who twinkle toe around and don’t take time to scrap with the youngsters. The top outsiders on my wish list are the Hidlays, Nolf, and J’Den. J’Den is more for his experience and knowledge. The Hidlays and Nolf are perfect fits here, IMHO.

BTW, if not for some serious bad luck, we’d all be singing a different tune as Lee and Eierman would be making a lot of noise already. We’d very possibly have a damn Gold medal in the club for Christ sakes.

Also keep in mind that some of these guys that are paid by the hwc to stick around are doing so mainly to provide additional training partners for the current Iowa team members and aren't really focused on their own personal freco career at this point. Doesnt mean they won't eventually decide to go all in. That's a pretty important role that they play in Iowas overall success. But yes, it would be nice to have more guys actually competing and brining more notoriety to the club. Ideally, it would be nice to have more guys helping out our current team roster while training to make world teams and I am sure that is the overall goal.

I see what you mean, but I keep thinking about why Spencer Lee came to Iowa. He came because of Terry. He came because we have a track record with lightweights in college and on the international scene.

We just dont have that track record with 57 on up and I feel like we need to find a way to appeal to those weights. Yes we get some studs, but to win in those recruiting battles for "sure things" you need to have something to sell.

I think we have more than plenty to sell…. Cael changed the game. I’ve accepted it. I’m not even sure if we have the means or ways to “catch” him consistently even though we proved it is possible the few years before last. I’m done letting it affect me personally or emotionally. Unless we revert back to the end of the Zalesky years that is…It’s a damn college sport for crying out loud. I’ll cheer like hell for Iowa and support the program any way I can. We’ve become the underdogs which will make all the sweeter when we come out on top.

I also relish in the fact that we are still the Siths of the landscape and like Tom said, if he ever starts feeling apathetic, he’s done. I have the same attitude and I believe every fan of Hawkeye wrestling should as well. Embrace the challenge!

Point of order here: Marinelli isn’t an HWC supported wrestler.

The HWC does have an identity problem though. No doubt.

I think the value of what these 2 bring to the room post college is very different

- ADS brings constant scoring and grit that may even translate better in freestyle. I could see him making a world team at 61.

- marinelli - doesn’t bring anywhere near the level of scoring. Dude is nails and solid but…

But stylistically is actually set up pretty damn good for free? I agree.

I agree with just about everything everyone here is saying. HWC doesn't appear to have the deep pockets they did in the '80s. That's a reality, not an excuse, but it's also their biggest problem to solve if they want to stay relevant on the international scene--and even on the collegiate scene, as top recruits have aspirations beyond NCAAs. We all want HWC and Iowa Wrestling to succeed. But other than making our monthly donations, not much else we can do. As Gobblin would say, griping doesn't make anyone aware of anything they're not already aware of.
