All the guys on the team are class acts! This one will always be a favorite though!!

This will sound crass, but in 20 years, I’m less likely to remember Alex, Kaleb or Kremerer. I’ll remember Spencer, Ramos, Clark, who were champions.

This is definitely one of the most pathetic posts I've ever read. I understand what crass means, but decided to look up the definition -- "showing no intelligence or sensitivity." I strongly suggest you view the video of Alex Marinelli's comments after his final match at this year's NCAAs, to better understand what it means to be a champion.

Simply put, there are wrestlers who have stood on top of an NCAA podium and I don't much remember them; and there are many wrestlers who barely made the podium, if at all, who I will never forget.

p.s. --- if this was a troll attempt, well, the best way to deal with trolls is to respond in a respectful and thoughtful manner -- totally throws water on the fire that they're attempting to start.

Alex & Moriah have been the face of the Hawkeyes and represented the university well. Considering what they've been through and the blood & sweat put into the program, it's gut wrenching Alex couldn't get an NCAA title. What an incredible bond the two of them share.

A big "thank you" to a great couple. We should all be so lucky to find a soul mate & friend to share life's journey. We are blessed the Marinelli's have chosen to call Iowa City home.

I look forward to seeing more of the The Bull and Moriah in CHA.

I've been following Iowa wrestling as a fan since I was a kid the early 1980s. Have seen all of the greats in that time, and have my favorites and those I will always remember above others from throughout the decades. Marinelli will always be in that select group for me because of his character, toughness, and fight he had in him. He didn't rack up massive points like others, he wasn't the most technical. But he brought as much heart as anyone ever has to the mat in my opinion. Kemerer also will always be in that select group for me. Few others in my opinion have ever brought such a combination of brute physical strength and mastery of technical skills. He's always had a quiet humbleness to him, reminded me a little of Jay Borschel, that speaks to his character. I couldn't care less that neither won an individual title, they'll always be among my all-time favorites.

Let me guess..... "Winners win, that's that we do...." Heard that before. As for me and my house, the measure of a champion will NEVER be limited to the color of medal around his neck. My kid thinks the world of Alex, and rightfully so. That in and of itself is enough for me.

YES I agree! I am sure that every single HAWKEYE would say the same thing, " The goal is to win NCAA titles." That being said, in the end, it is just Wrestling. Everyone of us wanted a championship. In the end, only a very very small percent of athletes and especially Wrestlers, Will every even get close.

The BULL 1st off, did what only a few have ever done. He won FOUR B!G Tens!!! I have though about this, What would he, what would I rather have? An NCAA title, or 4 B1Gs? I think if you only think about the end results, an NCAA title is the only answer. If however you think about your entire career, and winning the B1Gs as a Freshman. with 3 years to go.

In other words, If they had asked him his freshman year, "We will guarantee you 1 NCAA title, but nothing else, I am sure he would have turned it down if you are following me?

2nd, His story, the way he represented himself and the program, The way he brought it every match etc.... That is a true Champion! I look forward to seeing what the young man does as he moves on and that says something too. I am sure I am only 1 of the thousands of his fans!

Sounds like you’ve forgotten Kemerer in less than 2 months.

From the article:
Despite the gravity of his achievement, Marinelli said he would trade all four of his conference championships to reach another one of Morningstar’s goals for him — win a national title.

From the perspective of a PSU fan, I will remember Alex and Austin as well as anyone from this era. It was the epic matches with RBY and Cenzo along with how Iowa fans felt about them. Much like how Mike Evans is one of the first wrestlers I think of from the teams before them.

First there was Dylan Ness - you don't go upper body with him! Hell no. Then, Isiah Martinez shows up and throws Ness around the mat. Well certainly we've seen it all now - a new four-timer, no? Well no.

Shockingly Cenzo ragdolls Martinez. Okay - this is getting ridiculous. Can we stop now? I can't keep up. Enter Alex who throws Cenzo to his back and becomes his nemesis.

When I think of Alex, I think of he and Cenzo. Doesn't get any better than that. Nobody ever left their seats when those two went at it.

This.

college wrestling has gotten boring to watch for a casual fan. But certain matches are must watch. Alex was one of them.

Those non-title winners are/were fantastic young men with high character, I’m happy they represented Iowa wrestling! At the same time, they are also part of the problem with Iowa wrestling right now, mediocrity.

Besides Spencer Lee, you have a coaching staff, other wrestlers and a fan base that has let mediocrity creep in. The recent title was lucky. Pedo State is dominating coaching, recruiting and has a fan base that expects champions and nothing less. That was Iowa under Gable. I miss that dominance, that mentality.

You all can sound like Iowa St. fans and celebrate the moral victories.

Against my better judgment, I'll refute, even though most of what I'll say has already been said.

  • What about Iowa's title was lucky? If anything, they were unlucky they didn't get 2 or more. (Healthy Kem, Spencer, JE, ADS and few others might have made the differnece)
  • There was nothing mediocre about Kem, Bull, or ADS. They were legitimate title threats for multiple years, and each were even favorites at points. Right or wrong, I'll go to my grave believing that if they were 100% (which very few wrestlers are, admittedly) they each would have had a title.
  • In his last 3 seasons, ADS lost to 3 people - Gross, Fix, and RBY;
  • The expectation is still titles. Anyone who doesn't see the gap between PSU and everyone else is a fool, but I don't know who doesn't want the Iowa staff to figure out a way to close it. 3 years ago it looked promising, now it looks like there is work to do again.
  • I don't see anybody celebrating moral victories.. I see people celebrating the careers of great Hawk wrestlers and men, despite them falling short of their ultimate goals (and what most of us hoped for them)
