The Daily Iowan -opinion

I could give a shit about his opinion...but that was about as superficial and shallow a piece as you'll ever read. How did the DI editor sign off on that? Nothing...nothing of substance in it. Right in line with some of the man-on-the-street campus interview clips I've seen.

"I'm against -----".
Why?
"It's just really bad".
Can you give me an example of why?
"It just really is".
So you "could" give a shit? Under what conditions could you give a shit exactly?

"Enough is enough.

The University of Iowa is a school that prides itself on its football team. As of late, there hasn’t been much to be proud of.

The script has been the same for the past several years: get a winning record, play in a bowl game, and that’s it. That simply isn’t going to cut it anymore"

Ok, not an apologist take… but wtf DI 😂😂😂

Hayden had a 3 year dip in the early 90s and was getting plenty of criticism. He bounced back with 8-4, 9-3 seasons (the equivalent of 9-4 & 10-3 today) so that took some of the pressure off. The 7-5 campaign of 1997 things started to sag again and his final year definitely had a feeling of "this is it". The program had clearly lost a spark. Who knows how much his cancer battle played into that but it certainly had to.

He probably didn't get more heat as he was still the guy who brought Iowa football back from the dead. 3 Rose Bowls in 10 years buys you a lot of good will. The roster was down on talent and his last year was his worst at 3-8. But Hayden left the program in a much better place than he found it.

I think KFz has similar good will built up but the Brian thing has chipped away at some of that. That and his perceived stubbornness to embrace a more dynamic offense. Social media doesn't help as those things constantly have a light shined on them...fair or not.

FYI, Hayden retired just short of his 69th birthday. Kirk is 69 right now.
The 97' team was probably the end for Hayden. That team was loaded with talent and just couldn't win the close games that year plus laid the usual Ohio St. egg. They somehow lost to Michigan in a game they seemed to dominate and then lost by 3 at Wisconsin and 1 at NW.

98' they didn't have a ton of talent and the team continued its slide from 97' and finished 3-8.

Enough with poor poor pitiful Iowa. We are 16th in the nation of colleges spending NIL money. We play in the biggest, probably richest conference in the country. There are no pro-teams in this state. We sell-out Kinnick on a season ticket basis yearly. We are consistently in the Top 10 most watched games weekly. We lay claim to five national championships. We are not Ohio St/Mich.......but on a historical basis we are not Indiana either. We can and should expect more than mediocrity. The young man at the DI called it correctly. We can do better, Ferentz needs to go.

Wow, they are embarrassing themselves. I guess ignorance is bliss. We have a great coach in Kirk Ferentz and anyone calling for his job is beyond stupid. People who expect Iowa to become a blue blood are in denial about the world the Hawkeyes live and compete in. The writer of that article needs to grow up.
I don't think anybody expects Iowa to become one of the 5 or 10 "Blue Bloods."

That being said... We haven't had a memorable season in what, 9 years? 10 years? And we've been getting absolutely throttled by all the good programs in recent years.

You should have went into politics if you wanted to make a difference.

Did you vote on every single ballot this month? If not, you aren't concerned with trying to contribute to what you feel is positive change. You are concerned with crying like a little baby until your desitin comes.

All the bitching and moaning damn right is fruitless. Matter of fact, it's destructive. You are a destructive and divisive force in the community.

You honestly think Beth would ever force KF out before '29? You live in a dream world.

He's not going anywhere. Stop spreading negativity in the community. Not only does it make our community, as fans, toxic, and less enjoyable. But the team you root for feels it too and I can promise you it does nothing to help them. Quite possibly it hurts them.

So if you want your team have the best chance of being successful, shut up, for your own selfish reasons. Or maybe even entertain actually being supportive of the team.

If you want Iowa to be so bad that, in your eyes, they would make a change, then grow the f up.

It was obvious who Iowa was 20 years ago. Why would you expect them to be something different? KF's job is simply to win. He's not going around asking fans how they would like his team to play. Guess what, if he did, he would get a variety of answers. So what makes your taste so special? It isn't.

So thankfully, KF has focused on nothing but trying to win. He's done that at a very respectable and amazingly consistent level. So if that isn't good enough for you, get lost, or find another team. KF won't be seeking your input at any time
Lol, you're always so great for comic relief. Don't change.

Some on here are so scared of life without KF that they'll happily accept the continued mediocrity and being a college football laughingstock. It's really something. The guy will be gone sooner or later, and it's not that far off. I don't know how they're going to handle it.

I disagree, the last few years HAVE been memorable. not in good ways, but they’ve been memorable

IS this money that is donated to the colleges or what is given to the NIL pot? A big difference?

"Mediocrity", lmao.

Just a blatant exaggeration for the means of fitting a narrative.

Y'all can lie through your teeth, and lie to yourselves all you want that Iowa fits your definition of "mediocrity". But you are exposed by how the rest of the country defines it. When the large majority of fan bases across the country would kill for their team to have the success of Iowa football, that ain't mediocrity.

Blatant disrespect of an incredibly respectable football program

I remember that team as one of the worst teams … wow they were terrible in every aspect… I don’t want those days back ever… Nebraska fans have had to deal with this for how many years?

Yeah, so respectful. Iowa lost 7 of the last 11 bowl games and too often looks like deer in the headlights. Mediocrity means average or ordinary. It's considered the opposite of great. More than any other football team in America, Iowa is great at keeping a coach for 25 years when he should have been shown the exit a decade earlier, rewarding ridiculous contracts that were not earned. Wanna talk about "blatant"? How about the most blatant case of nepotism ever in college football and lawsuits for discrimination and rhabdo. Jim McMahon once said that "Chicago is where quarterbacks go to die". No, it's Iowa.

Mediocrity is not the opposite of great. Iowa is not average. Surely, you know these two things. Again, ask the rest of the country if Iowa is average.

Not sure why you think KF should have been fired a decade ago.

You don't think there have been countless other father/son combos on staffs? Almost every staff is made up of coaches who had previous relationships with each other. Why do you feel the need to exaggerate this as the most blatant case ever? There was nothing at the time of Brian's promotion to suggest that he wasn't qualified for the position. Never understood fan's level of sensitivity to it.

The racial suit is now laughed at by national media. That tells you everything you need to know.

And what do rhabdo, QB's, contracts, nepotism, and racial suits have to do with the fact that Iowa is nothing close to mediocre and to suggest as much is disrespectful?
