#4 Garza gets D’ed by 4.
In diverging from the improved Iowa Defense theme, although I wanted to add the pic where Pemsl blocked Bingham shot resulting in crazy wild altered shot that hit the top of the board and fell in as an example of effective interior paint defense by the 3-headed 2 Big rotation.
Today we see Garza in a quadruple team and he’s looking to make a move, well, with his back to the basket has the ability to survey all his teammates, particularly those who have retreated to offer help and we also see that NOT ONE of these 4 defenders are looking at their man.
Well, what the hell are our other 4 guys doing? If they are standing around the 3 pt line waiting for a chance to jack up a 3, they are being improperly coached. In reviewing the game, only pemsl and Kriener were actually cutting to the open spot under the basket ( and many times Garza declined the opportunity to pass the ball, that needs to change. There is nothing worse than giving up layups to make your guy honest in their defense of you.
So, A., if your guy is not looking at you, please in the name of god cut to the basket. (See JoeTO stand and watch? )
and B. If your Garza, make them pay! By looking for the wide open cutter to the hoop for a very high % FGA, particularly if it’s pemsl and Kriener who can finish with contact.
How many of those 21 FGA could’ve turned into relatively easy back door baskets?
If any team has this sort of turning of the heads, you need to NOT STAND in the same place.
