*****Minn-Duluth vs Iowa Game Thread*****

Brock will be a big difference maker. He can shoot and dish. He does a good job staying in front of his man. He does need help if backed up to the rim. He didn't have a great night, just an OK night. Chemistry not there yet.
Honestly, I've seen VERY little evidence that he can shoot to this point, and frankly if Payton goes 1-6 from three many nights we'll get run off the floor in B1G games.....

How long has it been since a team won anything with a white point guard….Bobby Hurley?!?!? We couldn’t win a YMCA tournament,
Bobby Hurley was insanely good.

I have a friend, black guy, from New Jersey who was in high school when Bobby came back for a visit while still playing at Duke. He told me the first time he took the ball up the court with Bobby guarding him, before he had time to react and look back, Bobby had already made a layup at the other end.

To answer your question, Ryan Arcidiacono was the last white point guard I recall leading his team to a natty. Ryan was no Bobby Hurley, that’s for sure. Perhaps a more relevant question is when was the last time Iowa had a real difference maker at point guard? Andre Woolridge? Dean Oliver? Perhaps not so surprising Dean-O was the last Iowa point guard to get Iowa out of the first weekend of the NCAA tournament.

Yeah....this is what an ending era looks like.

Ok, I went to the game and I'll give you my impression on what I saw. First off, neither point guard looked great, Thelwell looked worse. Freeman was the same as last year, he was decent to good, but saw no improvement in any other aspects of his game. Dix and Payton showed they haven't lost their shooting touch. Dembele if he never shot another 3 pointer, that would be a plus for Iowa, they have enough 3 point shooters and going forward Iowa needs rebounding and Ladji spends way too much time floating out beyond the 3 point line. Iowa needs someone to help Freeman with the rebounding and I was disappointed at what I saw tonight. If Freeman is going to be the main rebounder as Iowa's tallest playing player, this team is going to be a very pour rebounding team. If Fran thinks Even Braun's is going to provide rebounding, well that's laughable at best. Cooper Koch is going to be a good one, but as a freshman, needs a lot of gain weight, he's not a go to rebounder but has a descant 3 point shot, time will till. I thought Seydou Traore could be something special, very athletic, but is not as tall as Iowa needs him, another 2 or 3 inches taller would be more useful. Pryce is remarkable physically improved, especially in the upper body. Now as far as Riley is concerned good for Fran to allow Mulvey the opportunity to stick around for 4 years to get his degree, Riley seems very content on riding the pine and providing high fives, if that's your thing, ok. Not good enough to play and help Iowa with rebounding as the tallest player on the roster is disappointing to me, but it is, what it is. My impression of Iowa going forward this year is this. Rebounding is going to be a struggle, defense is going to a nightmare, and if Iowa has to rely on the opposition to suck on offensive to win games, this team is far from making the NCAA tournament. Just an exhibition game against a D2 opponent, but was not impressed with the strides this team needed to take going forward. 31 games to go, not looking good.....disappointed at this point.
Look at the bright side. We are still going to win a lot of non con games because the schedule is absolute sh*t.

I realize it was a D2 team, but using one game (your first game) to predict results for the entire season is dumb... IMO.
Disagree. I think a reasonable extrapolation is that Iowa is going to win every game they play this season by at least 20 points.

But seriously....this UMD team is better than a lot of the non con D1 teams on our schedule. Not even kidding a little bit about that. Our non con schedule is abysmal.

With this years team, what choice does he have? He wasn't very successful in the portal or recruiting a competent pg this year. It will be interesting to see how Ulis does at Nebby this year.
Pretty quick judgment about whether Harding and Thelwell can be solid PGs. It diminishes Dix's game playing at PG IMO.

Thanks for the updates, glad you were able to go to the game. This is the most honest / seemingly unbiased review I've seen from you. I wasn't able to watch but your review seems to be the consensus on here & it doesn't sound promising this year. Perhaps the prognosticators were correct in assessing Iowa's Big10 17-18 place in the conference. Damn it's going to be a long season.

Yep, nothing more revealing than the first preseason exhibition game. :p
So you’re saying the past years evidence, along with what we’re bringing back, and then playing so poorly on D against a D2 means nothing? While our big 3 are all very good offensively they seemed to have learned nothing in the offseason about D. You also bring players in from the portal to hopefully be impact players. Was hoping a 4 year guy at point could come in and be a leader and continue to let Brock learn. Doesn’t look that way. Same at Power Forward.

Past year's evidence says that the big 3 are solid contributors and the supporting cast was showing a lot of promise. How they played last night didn't mean that much. Iowa always struggles of defense. I don't think a game like last night gets the players to dial in all the way. The next game will begin to be a good indicator as they are getting the rust off and learning to gel. Patience, grasshopper.

Crazy the different direction the mens and womens teams have taken. Just shows what you can do with a program where you have some excitement around it.
Please. You had a once in a lifetime player who may have chosen Iowa only because she didn't get an offer from UConn. Without her, there would have been little to no excitement. Let's see how long that excitement lasts now that she's gone.

Without a sizable backup for the 6-10 Freeman, once Freeman gets his second foul, Iowa will be exposed to teams that have sizable centers and forwards, unless Iowa's shooters can make up the lack of rebounding by shooting lights out, Iowa is toast. That's just the reality of Iowa going forward.
The 6-5 Traore and that's a quote from Bobby Hansen, and the 6-8 Dembele isn't going to move the needle with rebounding without Freeman on the floor. Sure, I was hoping that Mulvey by year 3 would provide some backup for Freeman but since Brauns is Fran's favorite to get those minutes. You could see last night, Freeman backed off on defending to keep from getting his second foul and UMD took advantage and got easy layups in the first half. He knows he's the best rebounder Iowa has and once he's on the bench whether by fouls or getting rest, there's no one on Iowa's roster to provide adequate backup for Owen, I shutter to see what could transpires in the next 31 games. It could get really ugly.

I only saw the last third of the game. I also was not impressed, but I think too many are jumping to conclusions after an exhibition game that doesn't count. I don't think MinnD is a terrible team, and they looked very well coached to me. Sure, Iowa should dominate a D2 school, even a very good one, but I suggest waiting a few games before concluding that the team sucks or that various players suck. From what I saw, I was most disappointed in the PG play and that Dembele wasn't better on D. If that continues, I might need to revise down my expectations, but I'll wait a few more games.

It’s a big drop off no doubt but Brauns is serviceable and gives great effort. Dembele will have to step up.

It’s not jumping to conclusions. We know what we have coming back w/Freeman, Dix and Sandfort. But we were weak in the backcourt last year and obviously terrible on defense. What you want to see in an exhibition game is have they worked on their weaknesses? This is a D2 team who scored 80 pts and grabbed a ton of offensive rebounds. You have to be able to impose your will a bit defensively. We know Frans teams will always score pts. And if your 2 transfers aren’t impact players then that’s on the coach.

I like Brauns as a back up defender at center. He’s very physical and pretty quick for his size. I also think Dembele is plenty big to play center. He did pretty last year defensively except against Zach Edey, which is understandable.

Okay then. So I'd bet the women were outselling the men when Gus was here or damn close. And unless your unaware CC22 is gone and they already sold out the ENTIRE season again this year. It remains to be seen what Jan delivers with this new group, But I'd bet it will be fun exciting basketball. I wouldn't be so sure that the excitement for the ladies is going anywhere soon, in contrast for the same old same old that we're most likely going to get for the rest of Frans tenure..

Seems like you are jumping to conclusions. I still believe the defense will be better this year, although it couldn't be much worse than last year, at least on the interior. Last night was not impressive, although Dix continues to be very good on both ends and Pryce seems ready to play a bigger role. I still think Traore and Thelwell were solid pick ups, given Iowa's NIL situation. You wouldn't know it from the game, but I am still hopeful that both will make positive contributions. We really won't know what we have until we have played a few more games and then play a power conference team.

Dembele is strong, and I hope that he and Freeman can play better together, because it could make us much better defensively around the basket and on the boards. I think Brauns has limitations, especially on the offensive end, but he plays with physicality that can help for a few minutes at a time.

That's what struck me. Felt like Brock wasn't in a position to succeed tonight running the offense. Disappointed he missed those open 3s. Those need to go down. Had a couple nice hustle plays though.

Also disappointed Tadjo didn't get in. But it felt like the game was never comfortable enough to put 5 bench guys on the floor at once. Definitely not the game Fran was hoping for. If Tadjo doesn't see the floor in the home opener I'll get concerned about bench minutes.

Guards that can’t shoot from the perimeter are a negative, especially when they are approximately 5’ 10”.

Not totally sold on Ladi yet i think Seydore had better handles, better defensive awareness and has better hops shot percentage is even

In Brock's last 10 games of last season, he had 22 assists, shot .44, and hit .56 from 3 pt range. His shooting greatly improved from the start of the season. That was 5 of 9 from 3 pt range.
The thing about Brock is if you’re going to play a guy that small, he better be quick. He still struggles to keep guards in front of him and since we switch on most screens after a few passes he gets isolated on a big guy which is a problem.
