The delay of game

false premise. That kick wouldn't have happened. It's a completely new set of random events. Punting from 5 yards closer resets everything. Punt likely falls somewhere different. Play call is different. Iowa's coverage might be different. Even if he does end up that same place, maybe he approaches the ball differently knowing he has to go 59 instead of 54.

Completely new set of random events.

Bottom line KFz didn't control everything he could.

Agreed that you cannot apply the same scenario with a different punt and starting location. Another consideration is that Iowa State kicked the FG on 3rd down with 9 seconds remaining. If they were faced with a 59-yard field goal, they likely try to run one more pass on the sideline to pick up a few yards and end up with a similar length FG to what we saw.

Well, this is one of those totally useless discussions because nobody can know what would have happened. I think if the ball had been five yards farther out, Campbell would still have tried the FG. The kid made a 65-yarder in scrimmage last week and had nailed a 46-yarder in this game with a lot of room to spare.

Both FG’s Saturday were with the wind. He missed a 41 yarder against the wind. Maybe he would have made a 54 or 59 yard FG against the wind and maybe not.

Moot point.

7. Not calling a TO to ice a freshman kicker with the game on the line?

I could go either way on that one, but with a young kicker, second overall game, I’d lean towards calling one. Early enough to where he doesn’t get a practice attempt at it.
Icing is overrated. That's plenty of pressure already. Kicking near the home sidelines in Kinnick for the game winner. Kid nailed it. By the time they setup for the kick, the game was already lost.

No doubt he nailed it. Clutch kick for a Freshman. Campbell clearly knew he could.

Clones made the plays when they needed to and Hawks didn't. Iowa's coaches shouldn't have let it get to that point.

I understand your point and agree with it, but for the record, the kick would have been good from 59.
you don't know that your kicker wouldn't have tried to give it some extra leg because of the extra distance and hooked it. 5 more yards on top of a 54 yard FG is a big deal. IF it is also true KF also gave up the Wind in 4th quarter, and we all know he went for two PT conversion chasing points when he didn't have to (and has terrible record on 2pt conversion)...that all points toward poor coaching choices. I give ISU credit for the win...but KF made it easier.

I agree and generally don’t buy into it much. Certain times I would try it as a coach. Saturday was probably one of them. It just seemed like too smooth of a transition for ISU getting their FG unit on the field and set up like you said. If nothing else just to disrupt their flow. Probably wouldn’t have made a difference, no.

Kirk has never used timeouts well. Like at the end of the first half, why are we calling timeout with over a minute left on the clock and first and goal inside the 5? It’s obvious we are going to run out of downs before we run out of time. All he accomplished was giving ISU a chance to score.

If you explained this to KF he would then explain to you that you don’t know what you are talking about and he’s been a ball coach for 40 years. and all his adoring fans would nod their heads in agreement.

I would say a mixture of both. In his mind he is never wrong, so the reason we lose is just dumb luck. He needed to retire after the 2019 season when we beat USC.
The delay of game penalty isn’t why we lost. We lost because we gave up a 40 pass with less than 25 seconds to go. If you watched the winning FG, then you know it would have been good from 5 more yards out.
