The Fran post game interview

What are your expectations? Do you think Iowa is easy to recruit to?

A decent tournament run once every 4 or 5 years. I feel like that expectation is not totally unrealistic. I'd love a Big 10 Championship but that's never going to happen.

No, I don't think Iowa is easy to recruit to. I'm positive that Iowa's seemingly forever run of mishaps in the tourney or lack of appearances has something to do with that.

Have a Merry Christmas, bob!

We lost in Garza’s senior year in the second game. Last year we list to Richmond in opening round. This year likely no tourney at all.
The way you worded that was weird because last year we didn't have the Wooden Award winner--only Garza won that, but point taken.

"Fans demanding change." Lol. Get over yourselves.

Nobody wants to live in the toxic state that was Iowa this football season. Nobody cares about your bleeding vaginas
Ass clowns like you have no voice. Now go take a seat.

I hope we finally part ways but it seems Iowa is way too afraid, aka “but Dr Tom”…
Meh, after this season would be the perfect time for Iowa to make a change.

We have no major recruiting class coming, several key players leaving or transferring or graduating after this season, and Jack is part of the 2025 class.

If he wants to come to Iowa, he certainly still can, or he can follow his father if he gets a job somewhere else.

But it's probably as good a time as any for Iowa to part ways after this season.

But didn’t you just claim Iowa fans are at all-time high approval levels? I get what you mean (I think) but yet Carver isn’t filling up, isn’t a true HCA, and nobody seems to care. I actually think fan apathy has set in.
I am amazed at how many people no longer care about Iowa basketball in Iowa City.

Interest is nothing like it was years ago and its kind of sad. I don't have the answers but I would guess the lack of wins in the NCAA tourny is probably the #1 reason. We have had a generation of fans not get the hook that a run can give to a fan base.

None of us have a voice of any importance. That's the point.

Justifying whiny negativity as "demanding change" is about as productive as me calling someone a vagina.

Demanding change isn't some noble cause. Plenty of change was demanded for this football season. How did that go? The negativity that neighbors one all season long just isn't worth it

I’ve already said my piece about how badly Fran mismanaged Joe T. Joe T had the shortest leash in all of college basketball and played panicked every time he was on the court because of it.
Every year Fran has a player who gets the short leash. Utoff, Joe T, Kris Murray, Bowen. Meanwhile Patrick, Ulis, and Sandfort can stink it up as long as they like. I know Jared got a lot of minutes but he often got pulled if he made a mistake while Oglesby just built another brick house. .

It started with Alford and his support for a rapist then hit rock bottom with some horrible basketball with Lickliter teams combined with a shift in attendance to games nationally and has never recovered since.

It sure as hell seems that way. 😝

I still can’t believe Iowa yielded 92 points to Eastern frickin Illinois. I don’t care who is injured. There’s no excuse for being that disinterested in defense.

Regardless, Iowa will rebound from that shit show and have their normal ho hum success in the B1G Ten, but last night sealed the deal for me as far as wanting Fran gone is concerned. Fran will just never prioritize defense to the degree that is needed to reach that ever elusive next level of success. Iowa needs to part ways with Fran and hit the reset button.
EIU avg 61 pts/Gm
scored 55 in 2H against Frans starters , 3 who,played 20min and 2 that played 15 and 16m.

few can go 20m and optimal defensive capacity , this Loss is mostly on Fran for his blunder in not keeping fresh legs in game

This is where it begins and ends.

The contract extension for Kirk was head scratching, but at least Kirk has top ten finishes and big bowl wins to his credit. The one to Fran was beyond the pale. Fran hasn’t won shit (outside of a BTT championship which Alfraud won a couple times).

Barta is a spineless weasel.
Fran has had the best player in the country followed by the 6th pick in the nfl draft last year including a big ten championship. Upon further review, you're a dumass

It's hard to imagine a Fran team winning a second round game because the deficiencies are the same year after year. Lack of toughness, defensive lapses, and under 5 minute choke jobs due to inferior guard play.
Second round game!? They have to make it to a 1st round game.

Maybe Northwestern, Penn State, Rutgers.

Traditional bottom feeders with un interested fan bases.

Iowa isn't quite as bad as those schools but does have a unique amount of patience for mediocrity.

There does seem to be a pretty obvious ceiling with Fran.

He gets mad when the rest of the league is physical with his teams but he won't adapt to it.
Also Nebraska.

There's a reason Kinnick seats 70k and Carver 15k.

There's also a reason football drives all high level athletic departments.

Tailgating is a huge factor that should never be discounted. If every basketball game was once a week on Saturday afternoon, with a party before the game, attendance would be better.

However Iowa's basketball following is still damaged. It can recover with few postseason runs I think but I would settle for 1

Fran hasn’t cashed in on some of the NBA talent. His shining moment is the BIG tournament run last year and he flushed that with an embarrassment a few days later.

He’s just above the line where he’s doing enough. He’s generally always had teams exactly like he has this year with this team.

Unfortunately, very unlikely to happen when you live and die with the three and don't commit to playing defense.

What are your expectations? Do you think Iowa is easy to recruit to?
With Fran as the head coach? No, Iowa isn't too easy to recruit to when prospects know he has a history of playing his sons over better players, he sucks at coaching defense, and can't make a s16 to save his life.

When TJ Otzelburger is recruiting kids to Ames the way he is I don't want to hear these BS excuses. Kids will go about anywhere for the right coach

So I get this….very frustrating that TJ seems to be able to pull kids into ISU when his prior coaching career isn’t that great, right?

That said, his ISU team got their ass handed to them in Iowa City recently….with Fran’s sons playing key roles…. And any high school kid with half a brain can look at the age of his sons and realize there’s plenty of opportunity.

Trying to think critically it seems to me that EVERY coach has their strengths and weaknesses. How many coaches are there that could coach at Iowa and recruit at a high level, have teams playing strong enough on both ends of the floor, do it with the level of character, necessary, and consistently compete for B10 Championships and deep runs in the NCAA tournament???? And be willing to stay at Iowa when you know other Big Time programs with more money would consistently be after him?

This correct.

Talent isn't really Frans problem though.

Nothing short of an NBA roster is going to win when it matters if you don't make defense your main focus.
